I have an annoying thing on my MacBook where video seems to be jumping back and forth in brightness/saturation. Feels like HDR is being turned on and off every few seconds depending on what is on screen. A quick Google search led me nowhere. Does anyone know what my issue is and how to fix it?

Things I've checked that haven't worked:
❌ True tone
❌ Auto-brightness

@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@Techaltar Weird 🤔Does it happen with any video player? Does it happen with the camera feed in photo booth?

I remember that when I first played Fallout 3 when I was about 10, I was fascinated how you could have an entire map on your wrist. It felt like such a sci-fi thing.

And now…

Does anyone know if there's anything in Apple design guidelines about the placement of a search field on iOS when it's the PRIMARY action, for example in a dictionary app?

There might be a difference in preferred designs depending on if searching is only a secondary action (as in most apps, where you just search through some already-fetched content) or the primary action (as in Rizzference, where searching fetches any content), as @elias pointed out here https://foxhold.net/@elias/111982543442818802

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@davidbures @elias Does the search have autocomplete? I think I prefer the field on the bottom, which means the keyboard shows up below it and the possible matches above it.

Seriously thinking I need to mainline another programming language instead of to keep healthy chances of being a BACKEND engineer.

In the UK market PHP roles are just polluted with full stack roles, theres probably less than 10% when the market is healthy, that mention PHP without also mentioning JS frameworks.

@theshaunwalker Webdev seems to be fullstacking everywhere.

Every once in a while, I have to say that I dearly miss the guy who created YummyFTP for the Mac.

Ever since Jason died, there hasn't been a truly usable and powerful FTP client on the Mac. Every single one I've tried sucks in one or more ways.

That I refer to the developer by his first name speaks to the kind of product he created and supported. I loved his sense of humor and ability to recall obscure details you mentioned in an email years ago.

I got his name wrong once so every time after that when I emailed him, he’d call me a different name and sign his emails with a different first name just to fuck with me.

My current preferred way to fail at FTP is Panic's Transmit FTP program. Like all of its competitors, it sucks.

It sucks because its slow as molasses, inexplicably skips or includes files, & has filters that are impossible to use. Sometimes it'll refuse to transmit, which is sucking multiplied considering that the program is named after that very action.

RIP Jason. You are missed.

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@sysop408 @roggmatz I use Transmit daily, but only for individual files, not syncing anything really.

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@sysop408 @roggmatz I’ve also had problems with recurring crashes, but haven’t found a good alternative on My favourite FTP client is still WinSCP.

I'll play a bit with HTMX tonight. The idea of not having full front end framework is way too seductive.

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@regis It’s tempting, but it does leads you to identify what JS components you really need.

I'm doing some web dev. Update a CSS file and the change does not appear in Safari, even when I empty cache or tick Disable cache. I then add a '?whatever' to the URL and the change shows up. That... doesn't seem right. Chrome's Empty cache and reload works fine.

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@joelanman Developing with Safari is painful. Pays homage to Xcode, I guess.

keithjgrant, to webdev
@keithjgrant@front-end.social avatar

I’m sorry, but I think HTMX is just gross.

A worthwhile experiment, absolutely, but I can’t see myself ever using this for a serious production application. I hope we keep iterating on this before settling for a non-turing complete, directive-driven language that gives Angular 1.0 PTSD flashbacks

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@keithjgrant I would probably try it without sweet alert or forget about htmx for this case.

I bought Baulders Gate 3 about a week ago.

I haven't played it yet. I haven't even seen the intro cinematic.

You know what I have done though? I've spent a few hours figuring out freaking video drivers. I had drivers, they weren't new enough. So I downloaded "GeForce Experience" GeWhiz that was terrible. I had to make an account, and confirm an email all so it would download drivers. Then it downloaded the drivers, then it "failed" with no explanation or hints on what to fix.

I've been thinking about these "dns propagation checkers" like https://www.whatsmydns.net/ that show you a world map.

This feels weird to me, because the main reason that DNS lookups get outdated records is that the resolver has an old record cached. And whether or not a record is cached has nothing to do with the geographical location of the server?

what's going on with these sites? why are they designed this way?

(would love to hear from people who actually know the answer, not guesses)

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@Edent @b0rk Yeah, that makes sense. Remember that often people are checking to see if their clients will be able to open some new domain.

@bobmagicii Yes but they seem to respect aria labels, which is enough to customize the website with your own CSS. You can put the bird back. You can hide all tweets by bluecheckers.

How to use Mastodon:

Step 1: Sign up.

Step 2: Do regular social media stuff.

Journalists: Only those with advanced degrees in computer science should even attempt to navigate Mastodon, the frustrations of its complexities will drive the average user to a state of hysteria.

t_var_s,
@t_var_s@phpc.social avatar

@lowqualityfacts To be fair, if your eyes glaze over when you hear the word “instance”, you’re going to have trouble sometimes finding and following people who are not on yours. Other than that, if you use a mobile app, the experience is pretty friendly.
