So... I re-watched Nimona last night and was (re-) struck by just how pointed it is without really bashing you over the head. That whole "I'm going to destroy half the city to 'protect our way of life'" thing just reminds me so much of how racism works (we'll hurt ourselves, but we'll hurt them more), and, honestly, that whole "you can't let a commoner become a knight; it's against our whole way of life" just reeks of it, imo.

Good flick, recommended, if you haven't seen it yet.

AOC v MTG

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/17/aoc-v-mtg-house-hearing-chaos

Next to him, Raskin buried his face in his hands.

Comer imposed a five-minute recess. When the hearing resumed, Lauren Boebert – the Colorado extremist and theatrical exhibitionist who usually battles for attention with MTG – was of all people the one to offer an apology “to the American people”.

“When things get as heated as they have,” Boebert said, “unfortunately, it’s an embarrassment on our body as a whole.”

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

In the fyoochah, all spam will be AI-generated, so there'll be no need to have separate terms to distinguish.

“Democrats in the Legislature made a final push Wednesday to repeal the state’s long-dormant ban on nearly all , which a court said can be enforced...Senate had the 16 votes it needed to advance the bill.

14 Dems in Senate were joined by two GOP votes in favor of repealing the bill, which narrowly cleared the Arizona House last week and is expected to be signed by Dem Gov. Katie Hobbs”

Yeah, I can see it's ripping off Western covers and smooshing in Star Wars stuff (and adding Mandalorian armor, which I don't want) and it can't keep itself from adding antennas (which.... who is our lone explorer talking to?) and making the laser rifle be firing.

So, it's amazing in its detail, but it's not the detail I want.

If I were to commission a piece, I might show the artist this stuff and say what I liked and what I disliked and ask for it in the style...

"The Why Files" is a youTube channel that regularly has videos with over a million views. They started as a kind of paranormal/fringe science channel that was mostly harmless, and that often debunked conspiracies.

But, they've moved beyond that in to material such as suppressed patents for cars that run on water. And treating climate change like it's a unresolved question. This has made their audience grow.

The things is they aren't just spitting lies. 1/

It's not just YouTube. Any system that rewards reads/watches/listens will wind up here.

It's industrial-scale confirmation bias.

We're negotiating a new social contract/understanding, as we always have been: populism vs. accuracy. The only thing that's new is the digital/social media aspect (well, and the speed of change).

40 years ago, it was The National Enquirer vs. U.S. News & World Report (in print).

Writing a thread on onboarding here, because I don't want to write it in the other place.

Context:
Good engineer onboarding is DEI. Teams that have great onboarding, tend to be more diverse and inclusive. Teams that have poor onboarding, tend to be more homogeneous and less diverse.

That's because poor onboarding makes life harder for junior employees and remote employees. Underrepresented groups benefit disproportionately from remote work options. Junior employees are a more diverse group.

I wonder how much ammo this will give folks all around the world who've probably been saying for years "We should reinforce the piers on that bridge that goes across the mouth of the harbor" and "We should inspect outgoing ships a little more stringently."

Hmm, so, designing a craft with engines up high but a center of gravity not too high (at least, not while floating in water (or liquid methane??)) sounds like a fun challenge.

Suddenly, we get marine design issues in a "space" ship.

No idea what the mechanics of that would have been. Elevator on the cables?
