Donald Trump, Sean Hannity, Elon Musk, Charlie Cook, etc. believe that the truth doesn’t matter if the lie is so outrageous that it gets you coverage. People remember the big splashy lie, not the mundane truth.

This has been true forever, see “The ends justify the means” (Machiavelli paraphrase) and “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes” (Mark Twain), but lies are amplified to a far greater extent than before the internet.

"Obama's signature quality was youth, and Biden's is age. Frankly, I'm less than a year younger than Joe Biden, so I believe utterly in his competence, his brilliance, his worldview. I really do. You have to live to be 80 to find this out: Anybody under 50 feels they're in a position to condescend to you. You get boxed into this position where people who deal with you are making assumptions about your intellect. It's very disturbing." (1/2) 🧵

"Most people my age are just fine. What can I say? It's a kind of good fortune that America is categorically incapable of accepting: that someone with a strong institutional memory, who knows how things are supposed to work, who was habituated to their appropriate functioning is president. I consider him a gift of God. All 81 years of him."

Trump suggests he would consider a tariff upward of 60% on all Chinese imports if reelected

Also…

China spent over $5.5 million at Trump properties while he was in office, documents show

strange technical Q: is there an easy way to paste richtext and have it appear as the raw html of that which it is composed?

So, copy richtext with links, and when you paste it it appears as "some text with <a href="">links</a>" etc etc

timswan,
@timswan@mastodon.social avatar

@craigmod Ulysees has a “Paste from Raw” command that I believe does exactly what you’re looking for. It also has paste from HTML and paste from Markdown.

"The story of the Moderna vaccine isn't one of a company taking huge gambles with shareholder dollars. It's the story of the US government giving billions and billions of dollars to a private firm, which will now charge the US government – and the American people – a 4,460% markup on the resulting medicine." https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/25/nationalize-moderna/#herd-immunity

timswan,
@timswan@mastodon.social avatar

@actualham Many people are taking the wrong message from this post, mainly something along the lines of “look how stupid and ineffective the government is.” The flip side is that hundreds of thousands of people were dying from a new disease and the government wasn’t making long-term profit and loss decisions about the funding for new life-saving vaccines. Blame the drug companies and our for-profit healthcare system before you blame the government.

@talia_christine and if you asked him which freedoms he means, they will all be things that Trump will take away, if he can even name them. Pathetic.

timswan, to Batteries
@timswan@mastodon.social avatar

If the EU has mandated that all (with a few exceptions) must use USB-C for charging, why is every single digital camera battery a custom design. Why isn’t there a standard that all camera manufacturers have to adhere to.

For instance, there’s no technical difference between a $300 Leica SL battery and the average $30 Sony knock-off.

Batteries are the limiting factor in the lifetime of a digital camera.

@Paulos_the_fog @stevesilberman That’s ridiculous. Yes, there is a faction of Americans that are very far to the right and yes they make a lot of noise, but America is nowhere near the most right wing country the world has ever seen. Hyperbole just makes people stop listening.

BREAKING: Israel & Hamas agree to temporary ceasefire:
•4 day ceasefire
•Hamas to release 42 hostages — 30 children & 12 women
•Israel to release 150 Palestinian prisoners (Human rights orgs estimate ~1000 Palestinian children in Israeli prisons)

A good step. We need a permanent ceasefire, release of all hostages, an end to military occupation of Palestine, an end to all illegal settlements, & an end to illegal blockade of Gaza.

That ensures sustainable peace for Jewish & Palestinian civilians

timswan,
@timswan@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid First, my argument is not in bad faith. Second, while the 2017 covenant, written by Khaled Meshaal, tones down the explicit language about killing Jews, it also doesn’t deviate from its claim that only intifada can free Palestine, never negotiation. Hamas is the problem, not the Palestinian people, and as long as Hamas is in power the Palestinian people will be caught in the middle.
