Finally getting stuck into that code review (meant to start last night, but... well you all heard about that already 🤪).

Also, I seem to have completely forgotten when I should put in a Javadoc comment for a class 😅

Love is... sitting down to code at 9pm on a Friday night when you're actually exhausted and really don't want to code anything right now. 🤪

"Even in recent days, the Biden administration has taken steps to contain the fallout from the assassination plot. White House officials warned the Modi government this month that The Post was close to publishing an investigation that would reveal new details about the case. It did so without notifying The Post."

I'm sorry, but... wtf? How can you even defend this? "Oh yeah, that functionality that doesn't do what anyone would reasonable expect it to do — it's meant to work like that."

smh

Coincidentally, this seems to expose a gap in security—since right now there's no way for me to continue posting to a hashtag I use frequently and avoid this user, who openly admits that they use .social to browse hashtags and then quote posts.

https://makai.chaotic.ninja/notes/9szvrst4m6

The only way I can use a hashtag on this federated network is to make my post publicly visible. Doesn't that make all hashtag-based communities here vulnerable to surveillance and potential abuse?

@andregasser @bocops Hi there. Are either of you aware of any references that log changes to Mastodon API behaviour? Previously Status.getId() returned unique values for all new posts. Now it can return the id of a previous post if the text content is the same. I can't see anything on the Mastodon site that documents this change.

Maybe a plurality of social media platforms is exactly what society needs to heal from the toxicity we've seen fostered by big centralized services that encourage surveillance capitalism and performative, attention-grabbing hostility over the past decade or so.

So annihilation.social, which seems to be an instance with known issues, is running a bot to identify and post about instances that are blocking .

Other users are then using those posts to send messages to the instance admins asking them to justify their decision (to harass admins of instances that block , basically).

An example: https://attractive.space/@expert/111582436230554231

Have sent five e-mails this week now in a back and forth about items ordered and whether they are fit for dispatch.

Last week I sent six to follow up on payment being acknowledged, shipping and the delivery address.

I feel guilty for digging my heels in over details, for wanting to know the order status and that items will be shipped in good condition and as advertised.

But it's not wrong to want what you've paid for.

I've almost abandoned all hope of this order not just getting cancelled 🙃

Just in case there was any confusion, moves posts from a account to another Mastodon account. It has nothing to do with Calckey. If you try to use it with Calckey, it won't work... because it's built for Mastodon. Clue is in the name. Love you all.... 💕

Depressing thing I've noticed with hashtags is that certain outlets seem to think it's fine to set up automated posting and tag the hashtag in every post.

Soon it totally kills the hashtag. When I arrived last November, MastIndia was a particularly vibrant space with people posting introductions and sharing ideas. Now it seems to be filled with so much automated crap there's little hope of finding anyone.

Wonder what can be done about this community-destroying scourge 🤔

Frustrating start to the day. The Lancet puts out a study saying one in three women are likely to experience long-term health problems caused by childbirth. MedicalXpress publishes a press release (https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-12-women-health-problems-birth.html).

None of the wires cover it — not Reuters, not AFP, not AP, not Bloomberg.

One in three women is (roughly) one on six members of the human race. No news agency thinks long-term health issues affecting one in six people matter.

Now locks you out of your account for 12 hours if you forget your password, try to log in more than about three times, successfully reset your password on the Android app, logging in with two factor authentication, but then want to log in on any other device. You can't. You're screwed. Everywhere else will tell you your login attempt is "suspicious". Yeah it's f***ing suspicious I have both a phone and a computer, Elon, no one has that.

Absolute trash.

So it looks like Universeodon and the Stux servers are now sharing data (some kind of index of posts), presumably in an effort to prevent spam.

If you post something to one of them, and then try to post something similar to the other, the second post will be rejected.

A lot of people have insisted isn't getting involved with the to embrace, extend and extinguish it...

... but even before fully implementing Fediverse interoperability in they're already talking openly about changing its protocols to add features like monetization. 🤔

https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/25/why-meta-is-looking-to-the-fediverse-as-the-future-for-social-media/

Text in a screenshot reads as follows: McCue riffed on the idea that fediverse users could become creators where some of their content became available to subscribers only, similar to how Patreon works. For instance, fediverse advocate and co-editor of ActivityPub Evan Prodromou created a paid Mastodon account (@evanplus) that users could subscribe to for $5 per month to gain access. If he’s on board with paid content, surely others would follow. Cottle agreed that the model could work with the fediverse, too. He additionally suggested there are ways the fediverse could monetize beyond donations, which is what often powers various efforts today, like Mastodon. Cottle said someone might even make a fediverse experience that consumers would pay for, the way some fediverse client apps are paid today.

Another week, another "some people found Mastodon unwelcoming because its norms were different to the other place where the mob cheers you for dunking on people, not showing them consideration" boost-bait bullshit bonanza.

I'm not sorry some people found having to be nice too much to ask and as a result went elsewhere. That's not a bug, it's a feature.

Back in November I wanted to write a tool that would pipe news into Mastodon (well, the Fediverse) while automatically identifying appropriate terms for content warnings and applying them, to try to preserve the content warning culture here that allows people to manage how they engage with potentially difficult material in an increasingly challenging world.

Because of bot restrictions on many instances I felt I'd need to basically write a server to do this, which...

Those who insist (and other apps) are too complicated for people to sign up with are really overlooking the complexity of the world in which typical people function every day of the week. Have they tried using a washing machine recently? So many buttons! So many program choices!!! And yet the clothes keep getting washed....

Thinking about these projects that will give or access to the .

The biggest problem I see is the number of Meta users inundating Fediverse platforms and overwhelming the culture, if not the tech.

Most Meta users have no idea what the Fediverse is.

They won't even know their extra followers are from or or ; they'll be new people from Meta Fediverse™. That won't be true, but most will be none the wiser. The perception will win.

JFC now you need to use a browser Microsoft approves of in your operating system to be able to disable its on-by-default continual surveillance of your every action while using it 👀

(Unsurprisingly, only the browsers that are part of the "surveil everything" club are mentioned)

@kushal I ended up writing a toot or two about my to-do list setup in Trello and remembered you'd been asking about tools, so figured it might be of interest: https://mas.to/

I wouldn't have thought of using Trello for to-dos to begin with but the automation lets you do some interesting things.
