Want to be able to move your Mastodon posts (including images and videos) when you move instance?

The first test version of my tool to do exactly that went live last night! 👉 https://mas.to/@tokyo_0/110407410863137375

It's still in development, so you might run into some hiccups, but it does work. Let me know how you get on with it 🙏

Frustrating start to the day. The Lancet puts out a study saying one in three women are likely to experience long-term health problems caused by childbirth. MedicalXpress publishes a press release (https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-12-women-health-problems-birth.html).

None of the wires cover it — not Reuters, not AFP, not AP, not Bloomberg.

One in three women is (roughly) one on six members of the human race. No news agency thinks long-term health issues affecting one in six people matter.

If you need to move between instances and would like to keep your posts (including attached images and video), you can do that with

It's a command-line tool that saves your posts from your current instance to your computer, and then reposts them to your new instance. It's in development, but an early test version is available.

You can download the tool and find out more at http://mastodoncontentmover.github.io

Request for admins: You might've seen this mentioned, but I wrote a tool to help people move their posts when they change instances.

It's still in development, but I'd like to hear from instance admins if there's anything about it they're worried might affect their instances, or anything that could be made clearer in the documentation to help.

The documentation is here: https://mastodoncontentmover.github.io/

If you have time, it'd be great to hear your thoughts 🙏

(Boosts much appreciated!)

A reminder that if you don't want to remain on a instance that federates with but also don't want to abandon your content, you can move it using 👉 https://MastodonContentMover.github.io

(I need to update it to use the most recent version of the library, but I don't want to try to rush that and mess something up, especially not right now, and the version that's there should still work fine. If you run into any problems with it please do let me know 🙏)

So it looks like Universeodon and the Stux servers are now sharing data (some kind of index of posts), presumably in an effort to prevent spam.

If you post something to one of them, and then try to post something similar to the other, the second post will be rejected.

Can you imagine what the #Fediverse would look like now if the response to Gab had been "Admins don't need to block these instances, individual users can just choose whether or not to apply a user-level block (mute) themselves"?

And #Meta is even more corrosive than Gab. Gab users just posted a barrage of hate and unpleasantness. Meta is commercially incentivised to destroy what some people are inviting it to into.

#Fedipact

So annihilation.social, which seems to be an instance with known issues, is running a bot to identify and post about instances that are blocking .

Other users are then using those posts to send messages to the instance admins asking them to justify their decision (to harass admins of instances that block , basically).

An example: https://attractive.space/@expert/111582436230554231

update: Release v0.01.06 is now available! 🔨

MastodonContentMover is a tool to save and then repost your posts (including images and videos) when you move instances.

This version adds testing functionality and upgrades to the latest version of the library.

It also further increases extra throttling when reposting to public timelines, added in v0.01.04 following feedback from instance administrators.

A lot of people have insisted isn't getting involved with the to embrace, extend and extinguish it...

... but even before fully implementing Fediverse interoperability in they're already talking openly about changing its protocols to add features like monetization. 🤔

https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/25/why-meta-is-looking-to-the-fediverse-as-the-future-for-social-media/

Text in a screenshot reads as follows: McCue riffed on the idea that fediverse users could become creators where some of their content became available to subscribers only, similar to how Patreon works. For instance, fediverse advocate and co-editor of ActivityPub Evan Prodromou created a paid Mastodon account (@evanplus) that users could subscribe to for $5 per month to gain access. If he’s on board with paid content, surely others would follow. Cottle agreed that the model could work with the fediverse, too. He additionally suggested there are ways the fediverse could monetize beyond donations, which is what often powers various efforts today, like Mastodon. Cottle said someone might even make a fediverse experience that consumers would pay for, the way some fediverse client apps are paid today.

Value your peace. Limit exposure to all that disturbs it, all that is unhealthy, all that takes you backwards when life is short and only ever moves the other way. Just take a step back. Loosen your grip. Let into your heart the peace of knowing what is for you will remain.

You can move (save and repost) your posts to a new instance using the command-line tool . It's still in development but has already helped others exiting home.social to move their posts.

Just in case there was any confusion, moves posts from a account to another Mastodon account. It has nothing to do with Calckey. If you try to use it with Calckey, it won't work... because it's built for Mastodon. Clue is in the name. Love you all.... 💕

@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

I have a feeling that in the end it will be Mastodon (or Fediverse services) that "replace" the birdsite and end up with the critical mass of users. Despite all the initial resistance from loud people who think two things not being exactly the same is an insurmountable obstacle, it's still Mastodon and the Fediverse that offers the functionality needed to replace Twitter as was. The others just don't. Threads has a whole bunch of Instagram users but still no hashtags. BlueSky has its own issues.

Is it just me or do all companies seem to think their customers work for them these days?

"We're calling you again because you haven't submitted your application to renew our services quick enough (even though it's not the deadline yet)"

"We're closing your support request because you didn't reply within three days"

"To receive your refund (which we told you you'd receive automatically by five days ago) you need to complete these lengthy forms"

This externalisation of everything has to stop.

More "Are you absolutely sure you want to do that thing you chose to do, that I think you shouldn't be doing?" bullshit.

So now anything we choose to download is scanned and shared and compared against an index somewhere of downloads that are considered "safe" and "acceptable"? And anything not "acceptable" to the machine must be characterised with suspicion, as a dangerous threat?

Another pointless extra two clicks.
