In addition to all sorts of backend admin improvements, having migrated to our own infrastructure allows us to add a bunch of tweaks to the main UI. The first of these is a new 'site theme' in three palettes: Elephant, Elephant High Contrast, and Elephant Light

https://zeroes.ca/settings/preferences/appearance

For folks new to Mastodon, it may ease the transition

Thanks @rolle for coming up with a sleek design and writing the CSS and @stux for shoehorning it into the menus

> Jose L Jimenez et al. Indoor Air. 2022 Aug. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36040283/

> The question of whether SARS-CoV-2 is mainly transmitted by droplets or aerosols has been highly controversial.

> For most of human history, the dominant paradigm was that many diseases were carried by the air, often over long distances and in a phantasmagorical way. This miasmatic paradigm was challenged in the mid to late 19th century with the rise of germ theory, and as diseases such as cholera, puerperal fever, and malaria were found to actually transmit in other ways. Motivated by his views on the importance of contact/droplet infection, and the resistance he encountered from the remaining influence of miasma theory, prominent public health official Charles Chapin in 1910 helped initiate a successful paradigm shift, deeming airborne transmission most unlikely. This new paradigm became dominant. However, the lack of understanding of aerosols led to systematic errors in the interpretation of research evidence on transmission pathways. For the next five decades, airborne transmission was considered of negligible or minor importance for all major respiratory diseases, until a demonstration of airborne transmission of tuberculosis (which had been mistakenly thought to be transmitted by droplets) in 1962. The contact/droplet paradigm remained dominant, and only a few diseases were widely accepted as airborne before COVID-19: those that were clearly transmitted to people not in the same room. The acceleration of interdisciplinary research inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that airborne transmission is a major mode of transmission for this disease, and is likely to be significant for many respiratory infectious diseases.

Beware post-acute cardiac issues, even if standard tests indicate everything's fine 😬 :heart_anatomical:

> Despite the paucisymptomatic presentation of COVID-19 infection and the absence of relevant anomalies in standard first-level diagnostic investigations, echocardiographic examination findings especially speckle tracking analysis (global longitudinal strain) along with some clinical aspects suggested further second-level investigations eventually allowing the identification of inflammatory myocardial damage.

"The wrong diagnosis always creates the wrong treatment"

We're not suffering from funding, staffing, structural, or service delivery issues. Use all the money, incentives, reorganization, or metrics bandages you want, but if we keep infecting everyone with a neuroinvasive pathogen that causes vascular disease and long-term health issues, healthcare for the masses will cease to exist -- just when we need it the most.

Respirators could have saved these lives, too -- if only employers, authorities, OH&S, et al, had spent their time in recent years on communications and enforcement rather than spreading mis/disinfo.

Sorry-not-sorry, businesses that manufacture this. You didn't protect your employees. TheEconomy™ is always subordinate to health+safety.

> One hundred post-COVID-19 patients and 76 healthy controls (pre-COVID-19) were included in this cross-sectional, case-controlled study. Participants' smell, taste, trigeminal, and salivary functions were assessed. The patients had a significantly higher prevalence of parosmia (80.0%), hyposmia (42.0%), anosmia (53.0%), dysgeusia (34.0%), complete ageusia (3.0%), specific ageusia (27.0%), dysesthesia (11.0%) and dry mouth (18.0%) compared to controls (0.0% for all parameters, except 27.6% for hyposmia). Complete loss of bitter taste was the most prevalent specific ageusia (66.7%) and coffee was the most common distorted smell (56.4%). Seven different combinations of dysfunction were observed in the patients, the most common being a combination of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction (48.0%).

“An outbreak that can't be stopped or slowed, and in which the disease is spreading rapidly to many people within a localized community or region (such as a single country), is called an epidemic.” ✔️

“The word pandemic refers to an epidemic that has gone international: the disease, once localized in scope, now starts to appear in other countries and even on other continents, typically infecting a large number of people in a short amount of time. A pandemic often has significant economic and social ramifications due to its global impact.” ✔️

“The word endemic describes a disease that persists at a consistent level within a region with fairly predictable rates of infection and spread, making it easier to prevent future outbreaks.” ❌

We're still experiencing both the first and second; we've yet to experience the third.

Efforts to redefine the third in the manner of 'figuratively=literally' are ongoing.

But, no matter how hard we're trying to ensure consistent, high levels of community transmission, it's still far from predictable when one or more new variants will emerge and start the epidemic➡️pandemic cycle all over again.

If different variants can have different exhaled viral load, it's reasonable to assume the same of excretions.

And really, any unique characteristic that can be used against the virus is something that's going to be selected out as long as we keep giving it trillions of opportunities to mutate.

“Ag-RDTs are useful tools for rapid identification of individuals with high viral loads in the specimen type tested… the utility of Ag-RDTs for detection of infected and presumably infectious individuals is often justified using several assumptions… in particular that viral loads in all specimen types from an individual at a given time point are similar. Our study demonstrates that this assumption is not justified.”

A quick PSA:

Thanks to all the engineers, nurses, MDs, PhDs, etc who've resisted the gaslighting and taken so much time out of their lives to translate critically important information into common language for their fellow humans.

It's been a bright, shining light that's guiding us safely through.
