I've decided to get my license. I already know most of the fundamentals so with a little study should be able to pass just fine. I think it's an important infrastructure to keep going and expand, especially these days.

I will also continue to expand the network on the North Shore of Boston, with hopes of having it support connection all the way to Boston Proper (we have line of sight spots up here directly to the city and surrounding areas!)

On top of that, I've got the hardware and ability to set up a MassMesh mesh wifi node. The network is small, but a good proof of concept for a higher bandwidth community networking solution independent of the trunk internet.

Any tips or encouragement from anyone appreciated!

We need to start contending with the fact that not only is AI simply not helpful, it's actively harmful—to the environment, to our continued survival on this planet, to our society, and to human progress.

We need to stop the AI train before it drags us off the cliff it's barreling toward.

It's not enough to simply ignore it and roll our eyes.

I'm listening to Sympathy For The Devil (Stones) and Crazy (Gnarls Barkley) on loop and thinking about how I became such a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

Pretty sure it was the decades of seeing so many people (including myself) act like they had little to no agency over the big aspects of their lives. (And the systems which supported those beliefs.)

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@recursive lol basically the summary of my work with my therapist over the last few years.

That trap of lack of agency is so hard to break away from, so many things reinforce it. Sucks.

I did this recently in JS and unusually, I’m sorry about it. Even given that I’m operating on an array and there can be occasional undefined (that is, missing array index) items, and I want to output a string result, surely there’s a better way to do this, right? Tell me.

UPDATED: Got it, thanks! (Check replies.)

let mask = [
 prevSet[a-1],prevSet[a],prevSet[a+1]
 ].map(
 (item)=>{
 if(typeof item === 'undefined') return 0;
 else return item;}
 ).join('');

The PG&E outage map had just a few sprinkles on it last night. It’s been growing lots of colored dots ever since and right now it seems maybe 40% of silicon valley is out of power. Hard to tell because I’m not sure everybody gets their power from them. This will take forever to restore and the storm is still going strong, too. So if you don’t hear from me for a while, you know why.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@J12t They make "soft start" (basically big capacitor banks with regulation) that are designed for this kind of major current pull for starter motors and compressors. Potentially viable.

Replies are so messed up on Mastodon, even replies I make to my own posts. People rarely read them before replying themselves, because the threads/replies aren't shown in the home timeline; leading to confusion and repetition.

Why isn't there threading in timelines?

(Please don't answer that alternative clients do that; I'm talking about the web client in Mastodon.)

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@thomasfuchs just a heads up, mostly the issue with not reading replies is because all replies aren’t pulled into my local server, not that they’re displayed wrong.

I do NOT enjoy the weird religious-colonialist overtones and origins of the phrase "servant leadership" it is not a good phrase I do not like it and I think it has not escaped its 1970s source enough to have transcended it.

trisweb,

@grimalkina thank you! Always hated it. And it was never even a good description of the ideal we’re after. Maybe partner leadership or supportive leadership, but not that word.

And that does the same thing as your smartphone can already do, just worse

Cool stuff

AI rights! Unionize the AI workforce!! Fair pay for large language models!

…That should get Wall Street and the C suite to high tail it in the other direction.

Working with a large organization, we got the news that we would not be forced to use an AI chat bot on the website. Big cheer in the room. Absolutely no need for this crap bot but senior management just loves these things

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@gerrymcgovern Makes no sense. Irrationality at the top end of the economy grand scale right now, anything AI makes stock go up and they'll literally penalize you if you don't.

My take: it's disdain for human workers especially post-pandemic; a reactionary pivot to punish people pulling more toward worker's rights and better jobs; and both wall street and the C suite absolutely eat it up.

As my post continues to make its way around the internet, the number of people who appear to interpret "It's OK to call it Artificial Intelligence" as "This guy says we should only be allowed to call it AI!" is a little disappointing https://simonwillison.net/2024/Jan/7/call-it-ai/

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@simon what the heck else is it saying then?

I’d love to give you the benefit of nuance, but the words say what they say.

Really, I’m trying really hard to figure out what you’re trying to do with your post, but it’s just a big nothingburger. It’s okay, but you don’t have a stance? We should, but you don’t have to? People are smart enough to figure it out, so it doesn’t matter?

It’s all just very confusing.

I hope you’ve muted me by now because I’m being very annoying about this.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@simon well, sure, but it seems a rather small scoped and narrow solution to a much bigger and more important problem.

I get it though. I might have phrased it a bit closer to what you've said here, more about what you're going to do and why rather than what we should all do. That latter bit is, as you've probably seen in the response, quite a bit more important to more people.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@simon No, that isn't your problem in my opinion. I think many people disagree strongly with you even about the first version.

Can we return to purchasing software instead of subscribing to it?

I don't believe it will happen with popular software. Your best option is to vote with your wallet or use a FLOSS-based solution, provided it meets your needs.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@nixCraft maybe a controversial opinion, but I think subscriptions are a very good sustainable model for for-pay software. I’ll always prefer open software of course, but the idea of receiving updates & major upgrades and support automatically is really appealing especially for businesses.

I don't like getting yelled at on the internet any more than anyone else, but recently I was yelled at for making this mistake and it changed my behavior & my thinking.

I share this 'cause journalists (like the old me) talk about the pandemic like it's just another convenient way to describe a point in time & I now recognize how unhelpful that is.

https://mastodon.social/@coral@code4lib.social/111579240077415175

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@mimsical while the point is valid that it’s not over yet, I still find it important/useful to talk about that point when the world changed drastically. It is a line, approx March 2020, where things before have a completely different context from things after. 🤔 Maybe just the Pandemic era, accounting for the fact that we’re still in it.

Imagine if the AI goons got what they wanted and had some kind of super AI that could solve complex problems for humanity.

Now try to imagine how they'd react when the answer inevitably boiled down to "just use the resources currently hoarded by an extreme minority to help everybody, idiot."
