Trying to search for Lego on Amazon:

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@sarajw That is kinda cool actually. I didn't realize they were all Lego-compatible. I also discovered at least one of these is LED-lighting for popular Lego sets, which is neat.

They really have done well at genuinely chasing what their customers love—with Lego Ideas and so many brands and new sets—as opposed to just clutching pearls and going on defense. You love to see it.

Reminder about Mastodon "private" messages. Aside from not being end-end-encrypted (and so visible to instance administrators), they CC anyone @-mentioned ANYWHERE in the body of the message (not just those listed at the start).

They are now called "private mentions" rather than "private messages", but if you don't fully understand the semantics, this behavior may be unexpected and/or cause unpleasant side effects.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@mattblaze @jpaskaruk there it is!

Frankly I think this kind of feedback is needed. We need some kind of push to fix it, otherwise nothing will be done.

You’re completely right, a permission is not a private message and they need to be separated.

People here have resorted to taking screenshots of your twitter account and posting the images here. I humbly suggest moving your social media off of twitter. We love you here. And we have better moss and bird photos.

I think this argument kind of nails it:

Someone yelled at me for posting monochrome photos again.

That's kind of annonying, but this place still has fewer Nazis than that other place, so I'll be sticking around (along with my dreary monochrome photos, devoid of all color and joy as they may be).

It's time to very seriously start preparing for the end of industrialized civilization as we know it.

Either the fossil fuels go, or the food goes, or some combination of both. Either way it's not going to look the same in 10, 20, 50 years [with error bars].

Okay, last one for today on why collapse is inevitable, but this time with a bit of life wisdom thrown in at the end...

The official narrative is that we will get off of oil and switch to 'green energy', but this is a fantasy. Oil is the lifeblood of global industrial civilization.

Not only do we need oil to transport goods around the world on diesel-powered trucks and ships, we need fossil fuels to create thousands of everyday items we take for granted: Plastics, cosmetics, medicines, lubricants, adhesives, fertilizer, cleaning products, and much more.

Yes, some of these products could be made without oil. For example, hemp could be used to make plastic (although that could be difficult as we’re already using all of the arable land), but it won’t be cheap. Whether we use oil or not, everything is going to get a lot more expensive.

Consider the fact that we are already in a global food crisis with more people going hungry every day due to the high cost of food. In ten years, we’ll be well beyond 1.5°C of warming and approaching 2°C. Crop failures will be even more common, water shortages will be widespread, and we’ll have less energy to work with.

Now, if you could find out exactly when collapse will take your life, what would you do differently? Would you reconnect with old friends? Spend more time with your family? Read a book you always wanted to read? Learn an instrument you always wanted to play?

If so, why aren’t you doing these things right now? Given the fragility of our supply chains and power grids along with the increasing threat of nuclear war, it could all come crashing down by the end of the decade.

I’ve decided not to worry about it anymore. When people ask me when civilization is going to collapse, my answer is, “It’s already collapsing.”

Time is running out. Use what’s left of it wisely.

@jackofalltrades @breadandcircuses While this is rational and there's a kind of peace to it, there's something about accepting not only my own mortality, but the mortality of all of humanity that is difficult to accept.

And I'm not sure we should accept it. I think we should, if possible, use our precious lives and time to fight against it as hard as we possibly can.

If I go, I can accept my own mortality. But I'm not so sure about humanity's. Not without a fight.

In response to article titled "Sam Altman Says He Intends to Replace Normal People With AI"

People like this are hopeless man, like at what point in their lives do they become so closed off to humanity, so cold and unsympathetic

trisweb,

@impactology my only solace is knowing that the future does not belong to them.

trisweb,
@trisweb@m.trisweb.com avatar

@impactology I genuinely believe that people who can connect deeply with others, bring people together around problems, form creative collaborations and make the most of human ingenuity and creativity will win.

I think they'll be several orders of magnitude better than an asshole with an army of AIs. The AI might bring that up 2x, but it still won't come close to what humans are capable of when they are at their best.

@janellecshane this makes perfect sense; as they’re trained to provide language that makes sense and carries a confident tone, and they are not intelligent so have no way of knowing what’s true or not (they cannot “know” or “decide” or “think”). They will dutifully provide language that makes the most sense and has a confident tone based on anything and nothing whatsoever.
