Just got an email:

"I’ve now switched to your software and my stress levels have plummeted."

That is truly high praise!

Which best describes you?

("records" in this context are shellac, vinyl or resin etc. recorded sound discs played using needle)

If you have some records you can play and others you can't choose the third option.

If you have a player but it's broken choose the first option.

You "own" a player if one is in your home and you can use it when you want.

You "own" records if you are one of the people who must be asked if they were sold or thrown away.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird Close enough, but "I own records" plural is technically wrong, as I own exactly one 45 record. 😁

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird I've have asked a few times if I can have the old player sitting in a storage room at my mom's house, but even though it hasn't been used in decades, I haven't been able to talk her into giving it to me yet. 😁

@futurebird I tried to search for images of the model, and I think this is the one. With green backlit touch buttons.

Never mind Siobhan, Merriam-Webster should mind its language and remember that English is not the only window on the world.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@MacNaBracha And on the flip side, replacing an unaccented Latin character with an accented one changes completely how it's pronounced.

I'm looking at you, English speaker, who think replacing "O" with "Ø" just makes it look cooler!

Defaced some of my Stack Overflow answers again because the people who own that site are triple-A fartwaffles who are fucking over the community.

P.S. They smell bad.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@PierreM @thomasfuchs They are. They undeleted mine too. Thankfully there weren't that many. I deleted my account.

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Natanox @PierreM @thomasfuchs They ignored my GDPR request, even though they stated in their reply that the posts were mine by license.

(GDPR applies to Norwegians too.)

Edit: The main issue here is that you can't actually delete an account, only delete profiles for the various sites. That's likely the main GDPR violation. In any case, they ignored it.

veronica,

@DetersHenning @Natanox @PierreM @thomasfuchs Not deleting my posts, maybe not. Not being able to fully delete my account though ...

I feel the same way about AI that I did about crypto when it started becoming a thing:

• All of the moral practices that make it possible are fucked beyond repair.

• It’s spawning some of the worst companies, and enriching some of the worst billionaires in the world.

• While there are some genuinely useful, practical applications for it, there are so few of them, and they have had so little positive impact so far, that it doesn’t even seem like it’s going to be worth it anytime soon.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@skydog @oldguycrusty @nileane @sigmund Agreed. I've worked a bit with ML, and followed it for years. It's very useful tech, with a lot of known limitations and issues.

The current boom of generative "AI" (which isn't AI at all) is largely a money grab and stock bubble at the expense of privacy and energy, and a boom to fraud and misinformation at a time in our history where it can do a lot of social damage. As if the tech bros ever cared about the consequences.

Also tired of endless streaming subscriptions? Take back control and self-host!

Are you tired of shelling out money for multiple streaming subscriptions every month? It seems like every media company now has its own platform

I still have my little WoW books :catmoji_grin:

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@stux I have the boxes of the original WoW and the first few expansions somewhere in storage. Owning physical games became rather pointless eventually, at least for the installation, but it was nice to have them on the shelf still!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@stux I just started playing again. Wanted to get into Dragonflight before the next expansion. It is still a beautiful game.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@stux Nah, been there, done that. Staying with the new material. 😁

I started playing in June 2005. My oldest characters are now of drinking age!

I’m curious, northern hemisphere folk. If you were able to see Aurora Borealis last night:

  • Was this your first time?
  • How far ‘south’ are you (roughly - I’m not in the business of doxxing you)?
  • How old are you (again, be as vague as you feel)?

Please do reply and boost. I get the sense that there were a lot of first-timers and a feeling of shared awe last night and I’d love to know just how far that was felt :neofox_heart:

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@lukito I'm at close to 59⁰ north, but it was cloudy last night. I'll try again if there is a chance tonight.

First time I saw it in this area was probably late 90s. I also lived a year at 69⁰ north, and saw auroras all winter, so it's not quite as exciting any more. It depends on the colour. I've seen a lot of boring faint green ones. 😊

Is there anyone on here that has a recommendation for NVIDIA graphics cards? I haven't used them for a very long time, only AMD, so not really up to date on them.

I need it to run fine on Linux, which I hope has improved now. I will use it for not very demanding games like WoW, and for Machine Learning. I currently have an AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU.

I was considering a Dual GeForce RTX 4070 OC, since it would fit in my box. I can't have any of the super long ones.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@scottmichaud I have no idea what is best supported with games. I'm talking about system and driver support.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@SuitedUpDev Seems the 525 driver should work if I read the list correctly for Debian 12. https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

I ordered a card, and will test it. I have 14 days to return it if it doesn't work.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@vonxylofon Yes, that's why I want NVIDIA. Otherwise I'd just upgrade to another AMD card.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@scottmichaud There was a discount on the 4070, so it's the same price as the 4060. I'll give it a try. I also need Vulkan for the Linux gaming, but the Debian page says the repo driver has Vulkan 1.2 support. If not, I'll get a newer driver off the website.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@scottmichaud It's 50% more than the AMD card I have, which performed reasonably well for my DVD upscale project. See https://berglyd.net/blog/2023/08/upscaling-startrek-ds9/

I got my hands on the TopazLabs Linux beta, and that doesn't run on AMD.

I also wouldn't mind the better performance for games, so it should help there too.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

Well, got the card today, and it seems to be working out of the box on Debian 12, and running WoW at maximum settings without breaking a sweat.

I'll call that a success! 😁

So, I started playing World of Warcraft again this weekend ... 😁

I've been playing it on and off since just after its European release in 2005. My oldest characters have reached legal drinking age. 😅

I stopped playing in 2021 as I really disliked the Shadowlands expansion. The one before was excellent, and I'm now playing Dragonflight from 2022, which also seems good so far. There is a new one coming after the summer or thereabouts. We'll see how long I last this time!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@aligyie I've looked into this before, but found no solution.
