"The practice of giving sedatives to people detained by police has spread quietly across the nation over the last 15 years, built on questionable science and backed by police-aligned experts...

"At least 94 people died after they were given sedatives and restrained by police from 2012 through 2021, nearly 10% of the more than 1,000 deaths of people subdued by police in ways that are not supposed to be fatal. About half of the 94 who died were Black" #acab

@JoshuaHolland I didn't even know this was a practice until now and... it very much should not be. This is insanely dangerous to just be dosing people without knowing anything of their medical history and especially with the potential of causing interactions with anything else already in their system

I got recognized at the electronics fair, but the funniest part is that they didn't fully recognize me at first.

Then I mentioned I was planning to do Terrible Things to a keyboard I bought, and THAT'S WHEN they recognized me.

Apparently my reputation precedes me.

Ummm my cat just fixed a transmitter

It had been refusing to come out of RF mute and fully power up until..... she sniffed it.

It responded with a soft click, the power supply lights turned green, and off it went.

I'm looking for recommendations for things to help introduce someone to the world of electronics, both instructional materials and hands-on activities like kit building. I've run into a few people now who are really interested after learning about some project, like console modding or repair, and would love to increase their knowledge.

Wow, modems got TURBO JANKY for a while, didn't they... Supposedly this is just a PCTel reference design, with pretty much everything not absolutely needed stripped off.

generic FCC disclaimer and HSP56 MicroModem label text

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

In case you're wondering how these worked without an isolation transformer, the secret is in the "Silicon DAA" design. Everything on the phone line side of the modem is powered only by the DC voltage on the line. Serial data communication back to the PCI interface chip is passed via the seemingly random value 2KV rated ceramic disc capacitors.

In case you are wondering if this worked at all: yes, in most cases.

In case you are wondering if this was any good: lol NO

@zalasur @ai6yr the dry mode on the Braava is not extremely useful, I mostly use it and the dry dusting cloth in conjunction with a ribbon tied to the handle on the back so I can set it off and let my cat play with it! The results are adorable.

Looks like doors are the hard part of building EVs. Investigation over "intermittent failure of the latch and handle preventing the opening of the driver, front passenger and/or rear doors. @ai6yr are you sure? I mean really all you'd need is to construct a long pool with a couple of circulation pumps pushing the water through it so it can propel a raft around :D
