For some reason, I got a ton (or at least several ounces) of people asking me about Faraday bags for phones the last couple days.

While I’m not in the Faraday bag testing business, you might find this writeup I did a couple years ago helpful, mainly to explore how you can think about what Faraday bags do and don’t do and how to measure them. Go science!

What is the Fediverse? What does federation mean?

📞 When you call a phone number, your phone provider will connect to other providers in order to put your call through. You're part of the worldwide phone network: hundreds of independent phone providers talking to each other.

:fediverse: When you publish a post on here, your server will connect to other servers to distribute your post. You're part of the worldwide Fediverse: thousands of independent social media servers talking to each other.

A theme I saw yesterday & unwittingly contributed to: Old protocols are perfectly satisfactory. The issue is that as technology is brought to the masses it gets filtered through the lens of capitalism!

Personally I quite like:

  • HTTP
  • HTML (caveats)
  • CSS (caveats)
  • RSS
  • XMPP
  • eMail

I tend to be quite cynical about what gets sold as innovations, but I won't say there ever was a golden era of computing we've fallen from grace from.

~2000 had good standards though!

Earlier cable TV systems did not have stereo TV channel capabilities (nor did anyone yet have stereo reception TV sets!) So, for channels like MTV, the system would put the stereo audio on an unused FM frequency, and you could receive the stereo on an FM receiver tuned to that frequency. The systems also usually sent most of the local major FM stations that way. You did this via a cable splitter and attaching with a 75->300 ohm adapter to the receiver antenna terminals.

wndlb,
@wndlb@mas.to avatar

@lauren I’m almost sure I recollect watching, say, Live Aid on cable, with the TV’s (crappy!) sound muted, and the FM, through the stereo receiver, turned W-A-Y up.

wndlb,
@wndlb@mas.to avatar

@lauren Funny thing, though: this worked! There wasn't a perceptible time gap (typically) between the sound and the video. Now, CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC and BBC can be as much as like 5 seconds off from each other on the same 'live' feeds (a Biden press conference).

Fed rate hikes aren't simply a dial that controls inflation.

They're more like a Rube Goldberg machine—slowing the economy so much that workers lose jobs and pay until (maybe, just maybe) prices drop.

This is a bad way to fight inflation that's largely driven by price gouging.

Despite only being validated in February, I think Group federation has been a smashing success for the Fediverse.

I use Fediverse groups every day.

And if you’re interacting with this post, so are you.

Fediverse groups even make Mastodon that much more extensible despite Mastodon itself not officially supporting groups yet.
