In case anyone is willing to look into the situation, the organization Freedom House does a good job of describing the status of territories and countries efforts to safeguard democracy and freedom.

Their analyses of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank make it clear why people like me and Joe Biden who care about everyone's human rights supports Israel even if we despise Netanyahu.

BTW, now that campus protesters are engaging in obvious terrorism I'd be cautious of the support you give them.

By sunsetting Section 230, the US Congress could be about to break the internet as we know it

The proposal to Sunset Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act would eliminate the protections granted to internet platform providers from liability from users' actions

This legislation would deal a critical blow to the fundamentally American tradition of free speech and the internet as we know and love it

“I did not find the case trivial. I found it nauseating, a grouping of some of the least attractive and sleaziest human beings I have ever imagined in proximity to the levers of power. And critically, these were people actively and consciously engaged in an effort to corrupt an election. I came away from the trial thinking it was actually important that Trump had to answer for this conduct.”

A survey by the Reuters Institute and Oxford of 12,000 people across 6 countries shows a huge gap between adoption and hype around generative AI tools.

Just 1% using tools like ChatGPT on a daily basis in Japan, rising to 2% in France and the UK, and 7% in the USA.

The corporate wing of the Democrats has objectively terrible political instincts, because the corporate wing of the Dems wants things that are very unpopular with the electorate (this is a trait they share with the Republican establishment).

A political leader who does things that the voters deplore can't expect to become more popular, though perhaps they can pull off less unpopular:

https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/the-left-is-not-joe-bidens-problem

Biden may be attracting unfair blame for inflation, and totally fair blame for genocide, but in addition to those problems, there's this: Biden hasn't gotten credit for the actual good things he's done:

The Unity Task Force promised - and delivered - key appointments and policies that represented serious and powerful change for the better:

https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/10/thanks-obama/#triangulation

Despite these excellent appointments and policies, the Biden administration has remained unpopular and is heading into the 2024 election with worryingly poor numbers. There is a lot of debate about why this might be.

Choosing not to do these things is political suicide. Good politics aren't boring. They're exciting. The fact that Republicans use eschatological rhetoric to motivate crazed insurrectionists who think they're the last hope for a good future doesn't change the fact that we are at a critical juncture for a survivable future.

I didn't pay attention to who shared this on my timeline, and I'm sorry for that, but this was one of the better things I've read in years - it's about neorealism, misogyny, reactionary thought and why the popular Three-Body Problem series and its "Dark Forest" hypothesis are feeding into a rightward shift towards authoritarian/hyper-masculine ideology in China and abroad (including here) and man, it's a banger. The author nailed that shit:

Per WHO, every 12 minutes four people die of acute covid. Three of those deaths are in U.S.

As of Apr 2023, for every three covid deaths, U.S. saw another excess death not attributed to covid.

Feb 2024 WHO & Economist estimates reflect same trend globally.

[Global stalls again, as data slowly trickles in.]

Chart: U.S. Share of 28-Day Covid Deaths Data: WHO (via Our World in Data), NCHS (via CDC), official srcs (via Wikipedia) [ beadsland on Ko-fi ] Shows covid 28-day mortality as reported for the U.S. as share of G7, G20, and global 28-day mortality, for 3 years through Apr 27, this being the most recent date on which at least 50% of world population was represented in weekly WHO reporting (see note regarding ◇ data points, below). Share of population for each comparison is provided for reference. With the end of PHE aggregate tracking, U.S. ceased reporting covid deaths to WHO. After 5/14/23, chart uses provisional covid deaths from NCHS. ◇ data points represent sum population (via Wikipedia) of those countries that reported at least one death in prior week, as percentage of world pop. [Down to near 55% as of Dec. Was 90% last Aug.] 7-day avg of U.S. share of G7 covid deaths at 95.4% , well exceeding share of pop. (~43%). Same date last year, share of G7 covid deaths was 48.2%. Avg. U.S. share of G20 covid deaths down to 74.9% (vs. ~7% of G20 population). Same date last year: 30.7%. U.S. share of global parallels: now 70.8% (vs. ~4% of pop.), with about 50% global reporting. This date last year, U.S. share of global covid deaths was 26.6% (with ~75% global reporting). All three metrics were near or below respective populations roughly May–Aug 2021; thereafter have been profoundly higher than population but for few troughs, including a data dump by China in May 2023.
