Finding it surprisingly difficult to get worked up about the google anti-fraud nightmare surveillance robot today. 10 years ago I would already be on the phone to my senator, but after a decade of helping folks out post-compromise and just generally following the infosec news, I am tired of how privacy activists just … don’t engage with the very real threats that these very problematic tools are addressing. Basic account security is a total nightmare for laypeople and it’s getting worse.

Whenever Americans talk about "fighting for freedoms" I remember that one time some dude who got thwarted by his own flopsweat tried to blow up his shoes and twenty years later anyone who goes through an American airport has to shuffle around in their socks hoping their pants don't fall down while they get millimeter-radared for a security pageant and the whole country just rolled over and decided that's totally reasonable.

zzzeek,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@asbestos @mhoye @sidereal i would not feel comfortable with a society where everyone gets free gym membership, fitness/diet counseling, and obesity has been cut by 10%, but anyone can walk onto a plane with a giant bag filled with anything whenever they want no questions asked. that is, I believe in the concept of airport security if not specific methodologies

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

@mekkaokereke VCs invest in stupid dumb things like "walk my dog...with AI! dot com". things that can be slapped together as software or simplistic hardware in a few months. they don't want to deal with complex dependencies and development, manufacturing infrastructure, huge liabilities, safety recalls, the list goes on and on. That's why the US is mostly just waiting on GM / Ford / etc. to make electrics. it's just that charging infrastructure is a rolling dumpster fire perpetuated by Musk

zzzeek,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke this guy, first he literally gets everyone to agree to abandon CCS in favor of his connectors, then he goes and fires the whole team doing charging infrastructure. what a dick

@onelson we watched every episode of Girls so he is permanently a sensitive enigmatic hipster who lives in Greenpoint , and they even put some of that character in the movie. He's not plausible as any kind of dark lord or anything like that for me. Made the movies feel much less serious

zzzeek,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@wonkothesane @charlotteclymer there's a difference between disruption and imprisonment. a disruptive protest should leave no option to not be seen and heard, but it should not imprison the viewers in cages and prevent them from leaving. that is deeply cruel, unethical, and dangerous. This is not hard to figure out, there's 100 years of literally millions of protests around the world to study im sure you could find lots of examples

Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

zzzeek,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@jacob @mekkaokereke this was my thought exactly. it seems really awkward and inappropriate to single out people and just volunteer "as a white person, I support you!" I can see if a company has like, an internal message board where people are discussing DEI, you can come in and support DEI efforts at that level. I've certainly done that here.

@onelson we watched seasons 1-4 religiously and they were amazing, to the point I think about them all the time still today. Then we couldn't get started with season 5 at all, the whole world was different by then due to covid, and never picked it up after that

If you have not read this paper, you probably should. I don’t have a particular comment but the parallels are obvious and you are probably going to be seeing a lot of experienced security people referencing it in discussions in the coming days

A new paper offers a system to correct misinformation using an #LLM. The approach seems solid, and the results seem strong. I haven’t dug in deep yet, but I’m hopeful about this one

here's our current fastapi tag: https://github.com/sqlalchemy/sqlalchemy/discussions?discussions_q=label%3Afastapi 26 or so issues, all related to asyncio and connections / sessions not being cleaned up when they are disconnected / interrupted etc. Are there any fastAPI experts who can figure out what general pattern(s) are missing here why we get so many fastapi issues? we literally do not have a tag for any other framework

They interviewed a "Biden Uncommitted' voter and they said "it's worth the temporary pain of having Donald Trump win for us to get an ethical government"

NO
NO
NO
NO
TRUMP IS NOT TEMPORARY
HE WILL BE FOREVER

This seems to be a critical misunderstanding. A VOTE AGAINST BIDEN MEANS PERMANENT FASCIST AUTOCRACY FOR THE US RULED BY THE TRUMP FAMILY.

THERE IS NO OPPORTUNITY FOR AN ANTI-BIDEN "PROTEST" VOTE THIS SEASON

is this controversial in some way?
