How to use Mastodon

Lots of people have asked me about mastodon, and lots of people have said they've found it difficult. SO I wrote a post, because I believe we should think carefully about where and how we engage, and who benefits.

With big thanks to @feditips
@micron

and many others for the suggestions

I often say that Antarctica is really big - and one of the reasons that it's quite hard to work out what is going on is the sheer size as well as lack of observations.

We would not expect the same weather and climate across the US, and is almost 1.5 times bigger than the USA...

Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals.

Is a thing year? It should be. I'll start.

It matters where the water comes from.

Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland?

Apparently, many people are confused about how global and local sea level rise are not the same so I wrote a brief blog post to try and explain it.

Posting again for the European morning crowd..

Is there a scientific illustrator on here who could do a reasonably easy piece of work quite quickly (within the next 2 weeks or so say) for an article I'm writing?
Or can anyone recommend somebody?
EDIT to add: it's a climate/ice sheet visual btw

Taking into account all known factors, the planet warmed 0.2 °C more last year than climate scientists expected. More and better data are urgently needed."

"For too long, too few have worried about Earth’s remotest continent and its largest refrigerator, while attention focused on the fires that burned, literally and figuratively, on more populated shores. Antarctica was variously portrayed as an explorer’s playground, a utopian land of scientific co-operation or a poster child for environmental protectionism. The exceptionalism is misguided"

This paper on bird population declines is a real smoking gun in declines

"Agricultural intensification, in particular pesticides and fertiliser use, is the main pressure for most bird population declines, especially for invertebrate feeders."
We should be grateful to the thousands of volunteers who compiled the dataset: a "population time-series of 170 common bird species, monitored at more than 20,000 sites in 28 European countries over 37 years"

A morning thought:
In a car, it's difficult to do anything beyond very passive entertainment when travelling long distances, so it's hard to imagine that travel can be at all productive.

But yesterday's 5 hour train trip and evening on the ferry, was some of the most genuinely productive + creative time I've had all year.
The car/plane teaches us that travel is dead time, but the train shows it's time we can use imaginatively.

After last night's emergency situation in Denmark, with various public authorities posting updates mainly or only on X/twitter, I really hope that there will be a serious discussion of alternative channels in the coming weeks.
