Interesting piece in who attribute 68,000 excess deaths in to high energy prices. Who to blame?

Putin obviously for weaponising in the invasion of .

Successive governments for not and buildings faster?

Voters and consumers for not demanding and a resilient robust society?

Ultimately perhaps blame is not constructive: but I feel this analysis does show where to focus efforts

How to use Mastodon

Lots of people have asked me about mastodon, and lots of people have said they've found it difficult. SO I wrote a post, because I believe we should think carefully about where and how we engage, and who benefits.

With big thanks to @feditips
@micron

and many others for the suggestions

Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals.

Is a thing year? It should be. I'll start.

Still thinking about this article in : it's a bit counter-intuitive but Danes actually cycle 20% less than in 2014. The article is clear that it's not because we're getting lazy but because we don't invest enough in .

The Netherlands spends 5x per head each year than does.
Especially outside + on the edge of the big cities cycling becomes hard. Given has so many benefits from health to clean air to congestion it's a scandal

I doubt many people on here will be surprised by the grifts that and Musk are pulling, but reading them all in this oner compiled by @pluralistic , it does make me wonder why on earth anyone actually buys Tesla cars? (Or are all car companies this bad? I've never owned a car so it's hard for me to know?)

I learnt several things from this article, including that in , insurers are banned from using to estimate risk because it would increase premiums too much 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

We need a new # now. We understand the physics of pretty well (with a few notable exceptions) it's we need to work on.
How about ? Who's in?

I gave in and joined bluesky. Just to see what it's like.

First impression, and perhaps a lesson for mastodon: There seem to be a lot of old people there and unlike here, it was very easy to find them because I could simply scan other people's followers lists.

I guess that's what people mean when they say it's hard to find people on ?

Regardless, not going to leave this place, I like it here and I like not supporting yet another VC-funded walled garden

Would love it if the could recommend some good resources for tweens/teen on basic principles of + personal . Ideally something fun + not necessarily involving parents (who god knows that age group often don't listen to, or who may in worst case be actively abusive).
I'm thinking from basics like using password managers to how to organise cloud backups to what data + tracking actually means...
Ideally in English, could also be Danish

Ok. Now I'm utterly confused. 1minute after crossing the Danish border my 3G connection is faster than all the German 4G and quite a lot of the German 5G signal when on the web.

I suffer from chronic time optimism (tidsoptimist - a Danish expression)

I assume everything will take 1 or 2 hours. In fact, I used the 4 hour journey from Aalborg to CPH to compile some reports (financial and written), I was sure would not take more than an hour or so.
I've probably written more than necessary and it will probably form basis of a scientific publication, but it's no wonder I always feel a bit pressed.

Is this a common thing? How to handle it best?

Off to today for @PolarRES + annual meetings. Looks like this journey is going to be cosy... The platform for the train is packed, and unusually the train is an old coach series rather than DSB...
Somewhere on here @Hansen_Nicolaj should also have a seat (I hope)

Most of the specialised computers/servers at work are named for DWEMs* (or pagan gods/goddesses), so at casual lunch conversation yesterday we brainstormed a few names for the next generation of servers (we came up with Meitner, Hammer + Lehman, maybe Curie is too obvious) - but why stick with white women, what other more diverse candidates should we have for naming servers etc after? Would love some more suggestions to take to IT.

A bit of a relief from their endless Americanisms.

Would love some suggestions from the fediverse for other family films suitable for tweens/young teens with perhaps slightly challenging subjects...

"Climate models can’t explain 2023’s huge heat anomaly — we could be in uncharted territory
Taking into account all known factors, the planet warmed 0.2 °C more last year than climate scientists expected. More and better data are urgently needed."

Good piece in Nature this week by Gavin Schmidt covers the extremely anomalous temperatures in 2023, well before El Nino got started as well as the loss of and aerosols...
