The US vetoing the Arab-backed resolution is disgusting, but I think this point from their (USA's) counter resolution speaks to, in coded language, the fact they believe Israel is on the verge of or planning full on ethnic cleansing and that is likely a real "red line". If Israel pursues this, and the USA withdraws from their decades-long unequivocal support for Israeli policy, then the entire dynamic in Middle East geopolitics could completely change, and not to Israel's benefit.

No offence to proponents of the Fediverse, but when I tell regular people about it, the name is a bit of a turn off. I'm sorry, it just is. It's not something to be upset about. It's just... people. So I have been trying to think of other words or terms and I think I have landed on the one I like best.

1/ I just watched footage on both BBC and AJE news reports. You can hear the missile fly in. It could only be an Israeli missile. There is no other option regardless what the Israeli military said. That is not what a Qassam rocket sounds like. The attached BBC video has the clearest version of the audio and video at the start of this report. The BBC doesn't say so unequivocally, but AJE calls it an "Israeli Missile". The BBC does point out that all of the Arab states who had signed peace treaties also condemned it as an Israeli strike.

Just learned that some idiot parents from Saskatchewan sold their farm where they made like... food and stuff with their 8 (!) kids... and moved to Russia.

Why?

Pride flags... they're Christian... or some such nonsense.

They have a semi-popular YouTube channel.

Now they're crammed in a tiny apartment in Russia, no language, no job, no nothing.

Their children, at least a majority, will hate them at some point.

I just can't imagine the level of stupidity it takes to do something like that.

I suspect #footiMac is getting a little overtaxed. But I am wondering if other #selfhosted #mastoAdmin have a thought about these messages in Sidekiq for dead processes? Too many files open, on my end or the remote end?

Is there maybe a FAQ available for small admins like me to look to that might show the most common indicators of problems on a Mastodon host?

I remain concerned that Java/Elastisearch is putting more load on my server than is really warranted. Thoughts?

I watched the video of the Active Duty Serviceman, Aaron Bushnell, who self-immolated in front of the Israeli Embassy. The man was blurred/censored in the video I saw as soon as he lit himself on fire but you can see the flames obviously and the audio is clear.

I will not share the video here. You can find it yourself if you wish. But I will share his final words. Very few people in history have done this (most often buddhists, I wonder if he was buddhist) extreme act of self-sacrifice for a cause. Bushnell is the second I know of to attempt this about the current #IsraelGaza war. The first, I believe, to perish. Here are his words from the video:

"I am an active duty member of the United States Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it's not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”

— He places his camera/tripod on the ground pointing towards the embassy fence, puts on his uniform cap, douses himself in fuel, takes a deep breath, says "Free Palestine”, and lights himself on fire. —

He screams Free Palestine a couple more times.

RIP sir.

I won't describe how the rest unfolds, his act should stand alone.

Sigh. What a world.

Watching results of #elecciones28M #valencia. Voting is ongoing. Live turnout numbers: 2PM local time (5AM PDT) 1.5M ballots cast 43.7% of registered voters. Down 0.55% from this time last election (2019) but represents an actual deficit of around 45,000 votes. Last year’s turnout was 73% on 2.6M votes. Low turnout always favours the Right. 😬

I would just like to remind folks, as a very happy driver of an EV. All EVs, like my Hyundai Kona, are not Teslas.

Full disclosure, my 2019 Kona did get recalled in 2020 for a battery replacement, but the cause for the recall was a rare occurrence (as a recall should be). We suffered no ill effects before or after. And after, we essentially got a new battery.

Canadian media is so full of Fossil Fuel and domestic Car Manufacturer (I include Toyota in this as they have many plants in USA/Canada) apologists they have convinced themselves that because Tesla's sales are flagging (likely because of their idiot CEO turning people off the whole brand of overly expensive, poorly built cars) and domestic makers are pulling back production then the whole EV industry has "trouble ahead”.

Meanwhile, Hyundai America had its best March ever including EV sales doubling.

Very worthwhile examination by @anderspuck of what the word "Genocide" actually means and how it may or may not apply in the #IsraelGazaWar or #russiaUkraineWar or in other cases. Especially in the age of hashtags it is always a good idea to check our language so that we can create rhetoric that is both compelling and factual.

After watching this I'll be more circumspect about the language I use to describe Israel's crimes against Palestinians including #apartheid, potential ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and other war crimes, but perhaps not, specifically, genocide unless more information and proof of intent becomes clear.
