The EU reinstates funding to UNRWA starting next week:

The @EU_Commission will ' allocate an additional EUR 68 million to support the Palestinian population across the region to be implemented through international partners like the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. This comes in addition to the foreseen EUR 82 million of aid to be implemented through UNRWA in 2024, bringing the total to EUR 150 million.'

Huge. The higher education story to watch - not just in Canada but internationally.

We’ve just published an update about this Mastodon trial which has been running for the last 6 months – you can read it here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2024-02-extending-our-mastodon-social-media-trial

We are going to continue our trial here for at least another six months while we share our findings internally and seek more engagement from other BBC teams. We are also planning to start researching ways to publish more BBC content using ActivityPub.

prachisrivas,
@prachisrivas@masto.ai avatar

@BBCRD

In truth, it has been pretty disappointing to see rather limited engagement by the BBC accounts. There was quite a lot of excitement when BBC joined Mastodon but the accounts do not post regularly, and there isn't an official BBC News or BBC World account which are the main areas of interest for most audiences that access BBC services. There are other official media outlets that are much more integrated on Mastodon.

Finally, a good news story. The law included healthcare and education workers, including teachers.

'Ontario Premier Doug Ford's law that imposed wage restraint on public sector workers violated their collective bargaining rights and is unconstitutional, the province's Appeal Court ruled Monday.

The law, known as Bill 124, capped salary increases for public sector workers to one per cent a year for three years.'

@edutooters

'Paul Cavalluzzo, who represents the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, said the government's financial records were its own undoing.

"Certainly the government's books now show that this legislation was not necessary, we were in a surplus situation," he said.

"They were not even spending all of the budget money on health and education — the bill was unnecessary."'

prachisrivas,
@prachisrivas@masto.ai avatar

@edutooters As I argued, again and again, the government has not been spending the allocated funds for education, and despite this has instituted significant cuts to education using the discourse of 'scarce resources'.

In Ontario, and Canada generally, it is very hard to argue scarce resources for education. It is most always a policy choice and lack of political will to adequately fund education.

Today's ruling shows that. Very good but very sad.

Completely randomly this came up on my feed:

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Title Track (2024)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLqmL9cPN1E

Can anyone help me identify the opening back beat?

I remember it from Raghav's original Angel Eyes (2004) who sings this track but I know we've heard in other things.

One of the melodies in verse (~1:38) also sounds a bit like the Paree Hoon Main (1991, Suneeta Rao) lead up to the chorus.

Help. Any ideas @Jyoti @ErickaSimone?

I continue to think academics should on the whole be weirdos off doing their own weird thing, or people who occasionally say "That's obviously crap" in public and go back to doing their own weird thing. The idea of “impact” is mostly poisonous.

prachisrivas,
@prachisrivas@masto.ai avatar

@kjhealy And they should be left alone to do their own thing. But, that really only happens if they're allowed to do slow research and slow projects. The true impact of most of our work only reveals itself years later.

Truly humbled to have one of my papers included in the 50th Anniversary Special Collection of the Oxford Review of Education (ORE).

The ORE has published research by some of the most leading scholars in education. To have my work recognised alongside many whose contributions have shaped the field, and my thinking, is a real honour.

I've sat on this news for a while, gobsmacked. It was a lovely way to start the year.

Every year the Oxfam Global Inequality Report comes out and every year, pretty much the same message.

Money and assets are held in the hands of incredibly few at numbers that are staggeringly high, while the great majority is left out.

This year's headline message is that since 2020:

-The 5 richest men nearly doubled their wealth
-Nearly 5 billion people became poorer

https://policy-practice.oxfam.org/resources/inequality-inc-how-corporate-power-divides-our-world-and-the-need-for-a-new-era-621583/

prachisrivas,
@prachisrivas@masto.ai avatar

Well, it seems this got some traction. Great.

Some inside info: Oxfam releases the Inequality Report every year to coincide with the first day of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

It is a deliberate strategy to show the stark contrast between discourse of the supposed benefits for all of trickle-down economic 'growth', and the reality of monopolies, oligopolies, and growing global inequalities.
