TheConversationUS, "Every so often, a cause ignites a sustained fury on college campuses across the nation. In 2020, it was Black Lives Matter. In 2011, it was Occupy Wall Street. In the 1980s, it was apartheid in South Africa.
Today, it’s the Israeli military campaign in Gaza."
Here are five books that shine light on a rich history of campus protests in the US that goes back to the 1960s – compiled by veteran journalist Steve Friess.

DCBookstoPrisons, We send books only to people incarcerated in the United States. Fortunately, there are similar groups in other countries. This article describes a group collecting books for prisoners in Manitoba, Canada. (Unlike us, the group provides books only to prison libraries. We mostly serve individuals behind bars, although we also send books to prison libraries from time to time.)
paul, My review of "Dragon Storm" by Lindsay Buroker, on Bookwyrm.
paul, @Firlefanz I saw no warning signs about that in the book. Thanks for the note.
Firlefanz, No, it does stand on its own, but "Dragon Blood" (that's the series name, I believe) introduces the world and how the dragons came back.

In "Stop Telling Women To Smile" by Tatyana Fazializadeh uses her arresting street art portraits to explore how women experience hostility in communities that are supposed to be
homes.She addresses the pervasiveness of
street harassment,it's effects and the kind of activism that can serve to counter it.
The result is a cathartic recognizing with the aggression women endure, and an examination
of what equality truly entails
Faintdreams, #Books #BookReccs #BookReccomendation #Mystery #Romance
Looking for modern (so 2000's onwards or at least no older than mid 1990's) Mystery / Romance that DOES NOT involve murder.
Does such a thing exist?
Reccs please !
I assume that Mystery / Romance as a hybrid genre already exists but am not sure... 🤷🏿♀️
I know that ' Romance & ' as a genre is a far spanning horizon...
Faintdreams, (edited ) @satsuma for Iain Banks I'd definitely make a date range exception. Thanks !
Faintdreams, @RogerBW oooh I know that A. Christie was adamant about film adaptations not creating a Love Interest for Poirot, but didn't realize other writers considered it a cornerstone of the Crime / Mystery genre.
You have opened up a nice rabbit hole for me.
Thanks! 👍🏾

lukemartell, This is a stunning book about a repressive state and the personal and social disintegration that follows. It could be about horrors in the world now or in history and it makes it believable that the events could happen somewhere like Ireland where it is set or my own country the UK, given contemporary political processes. Rare example of where fiction matches up to the hype that it shakes you about the real world. https://oneworld-publications.com/work/prophet-song/ #books

mrcompletely, After a long run of disappointments and a lot of reading in other genres I'm finally hitting a run of good modern #sff #books I can recommend. First across the finish line is The Future by Naomi Alderman. It starts off in a pre-apocalyptic, more hopeful Bill Gibson mode with a highly capable young female protagonist getting dragged into an oligarchic power struggle by means of a Macguffin. Very readable, enjoyable catnip for anyone who despises tech billionaires.
mrcompletely, (edited ) There's a lot going on in this book but it moves along quickly. I suppose it is in the style I've seen called "hopepunk" but people need to stop trying to make fetch happen with that. There were a couple minor things about it that I personally didn't love, like too much time spent retconning the Bible and a primitivist-Romantic cultural vibe I can't buy into but these are nitpicks. Mostly it's a smart, well told story of resistance to the looming tech driven disaster.🧵
mrcompletely, Some other bullet point/keyword type notes on The Future by Alderman:
- forcefully, thematically feminist
- lesbian main character
- diverse characters
- very on trend/current in its tech biz references
None of the above feels forced or anything at all though. And the politics in the book are interesting, being anti techbro capitalist but not anti technology. I'm not really buying it but it's enjoyable to read and think about.
imalcolm, Well well well, look at what delightful new treasure the post has brought me, courtesy of the lovely and talented @golgaloth ! 🥳 😎 🎉
imalcolm, Yep, arrived in perfect condition!
Apparently it actually arrived yesterday - I've been in "bedroom isolation" away from rest of the fam this week while I have Covid again (yay...) but was apparently asleep when the post came and then my partner got distracted and only remembered to bring it in to me this morning.
Will be sure to let you know - I'm just finishing off another book so hopefully will get to start it tonight! 😁
golgaloth, @imalcolm Yeah. Those COVID bouts are no fun at all.
