This is a really interesting article from @boulderreportinglab

It's all about bi-directional car charging ports and how they can benefit the city, the power company, and individuals.

I'd be interested to know what this kind of power storage does to the lifetime of the EV's battery.
How many years does it take off the car's lifetime? How much does it cost the car owner?
I'd love to see Xcel actually compensate homeowners for giving them access to power storage.

A campaign committed to preserving an empty concrete lot in downtown is connected to many of the wealthy condo owners next door. https://boulderweekly.com/opinion/millionaires-for-vacant-concrete-pads/

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@bkeegan the picture in the link is a bit deceiving since the area is actually on Walnut, but I agree. The city shouldn't be subsidizing condo prices downtown at the expense of the public good.
Put something more useful than a concrete pad!

Well, I'm disappointed to report that city council voted 7-1 against designation of the historic district proposal that would have highlighted a history of racial prejudice going back a century. The one thing I'm grateful for is that the councilmembers appeared moved by the history that was uncovered during the investigation into the origins of Central Park. The public comment also highlighted the deeply racist practices and effects of reknowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Onward to the next battle for justice and equity!

Lots of power outages planned and eminent for my part of county due to this event. Our section of town has not received notification of outage from the provider yet, but most of the town has.

Batteries are charged on everything, backups and in place, and my hybrid truck with its 7.2 kW onboard generator is ready to power critical things (refrigeration, heat, cooking) if needed.

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@kreynen @lisafw yeah that is the issue with EV's. We have a Nissan Leaf but no way to power the home with it's nice big battery! I wish EV's had vehicle to home (V2H) capability.

My truck is a hybrid F150 Powerboost. I have not wired in an interconnect panel (but plan to someday) but I can still run power cords from the truck to things in the house that need power. The truck powers the circuit off it's hybrid battery and then the engine starts to recharge it when needed. It can provide up to 7.2 kW.

The power is still on at our place near Pine and Tyler

kreynen,
@kreynen@fosstodon.org avatar

@bud_t @lisafw We still have power off Dahlia near Safeway too. We have a camper van with a generator that runs off the van's gas. That's what we'll be using for the refrigerator if we lose power for more than a few hours.

We don't have solar yet, but I'd be really interested in a system that included a V2H option.

Xcel cutting power seems like it is going to be new normal during (now normal) 75+ mph winds.

Let’s take a next step and create more systematic methods to ensure decisions are considering risks, opportunities, & issues with sophistication.

Great op-ed by Mary Pettigrew & Scott Miller.

  • Integration of transportation & land use into a unified concept of human-centered

And more, thanks to excellent work from my colleagues.

Amazing @boulderreportinglab reporting. I've been supporting recognizing Boulder's first neighborhood in designating a District downtown.

In my testimony to Landmarks Board (https://youtu.be/ohm8EOPFSts?feature=shared&t=11911) (3:18:30 in), an area now occupied by Boulder's main public library was designated "Block 11" back in the 1870s when the city was just a frontier mining supply town. Blocks 11 and 12 was the only place Black or brown residents could own a home. It was later demolished, its residents displaced and poorly compensated.

This story should be told.

> Boulder’s historic district proposal sparks reckoning with the city’s displacement of early Black residents

https://boulderreportinglab.org/2024/04/02/boulders-historic-district-proposal-sparks-reckoning-with-the-citys-displacement-of-early-black-residents/

> What is evident from their research is that about a century ago, the City of Boulder was involved in displacing residents living along Boulder Creek. At the time, it was described as an effort to “clean up and beautify” the area, the Boulder Daily Camera reported in 1921. Now, for the first time, city officials are publicly reframing this moment in the city’s history as an instance of racial injustice.

A week from Saturday, if you're a voter, please come meet your state assembly representative Junie Joseph.

Junie was a fantastic mentor to me as a candidate and she is one of the most effective legislators in , sponsoring 19 bills last year to promote affordable housing, renters' and workers' rights, safety for marginalized groups, and more.

This year she's a cosponsor of a bill to regulate video and audio when it's used maliciously during political campaigns.

I'm a co-host of this event, so please drop by if you're in the area!

One of biggest things City Council does is set 2-yr policy & project priorities.

We’ll do that on Apr 3-4.

Really looking fwd to working with my CC colleagues to, among other things, hopefully develop new & transpo commitments that unleash new possibilities.

My Mayor Pro-Tem wrote a scathing op-ed in the local paper about the Democratic Party infighting and weird targeting of candidates of color in our district with negativity and resistance to their candidacies in some important races this fall.

Boulder sometimes pretends to be progressive, but a community of this many wealthy white people can be incredibly, institutionally racist in some really insidious ways at times, and this is one of those times.

Most of us didn’t ask the gov to give control of our physical movement to sellers of a monopoly product that would cost so much and take more and more every year.

But here we are.

We could—and should—make plans to give residents a better deal.
