Huh, I just discovered that maroon is officially Queensland's state colour.

@timrichards I seem to remember that every train station was painted maroon with gold trim, shortly thereafter. It's not exactly, accurately 'brownish-red', but a colour mixed especially, methinks. Queenslanders have been the Maroons since State of Origin began.

@RealJournalism I read a few years ago that we all rely on scientists to sustain the human population now. That was specifically addressing agriculture and food and water supplies. But of course, with the 8+ billion humans now overtaxing the planet and all the pollution we create, it's even truer.

Thank you, . You are our miracle workers.

@RealJournalism Thanks. Last I looked at the projections -- a few years ago, tho -- growth was supposed to peak at 12 billion. With disastrous global warming , it will be difficult to feed us, among other issues like clean water supplies.😬

I tried to see this replica 16th century pirate ship that one guy built over 10 years but apparently it sails around and is not a permanent fixture. So doing my obligatory visit to Urangan Pier.

You can see why the pier is so long 868m (originally 1.1km) when the tide is out like this. Also saw an Australasian Darter on the pier. #HerveyBay #Queensland #Birds

Queensland: "Doctors are acquiring RSV, COVID and influenza in the state’s hospitals in rising numbers, sparking the state’s peak medical body to call for urgent action to better protect medics in an already struggling healthcare workforce."

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/covid-rsv-influenza-qld-doctor-shortage-looms-as-viruses-spread/news-story/466e4388488f4a90de2e759b9eac5231

The plea for action comes as new data obtained by The Courier-Mail shows one quarter of all Queensland Health employees were granted special Covid leave last year. A Right to Information request shows that from December 26 2022 to December 24 2023 a total of 29,843 Queensland Health employees took Special Pandemic Leave (SPL). This is 24.7 per cent of Queensland Health’s headcount. The average hours taken per employee was 37.64 hours. The special leave is separate from sick leave. The Australian Medical Association Queensland is so concerned about the numbers of medics catching respiratory illnesses in the last few days the association has written to the Acting Chief Health Officer Assoc Prof Catherine McDougall calling for an overhaul of hospital ventilation and infection testing and safety protocols. “Doctors have advised that Redcliffe and Ipswich EDs are experiencing significant staff absences, with each having up to eight doctors on sick leave in recent days,” AMAQ president Maria Boulton wrote. Dr Boulton said that there have been concerns for some time about the impact of hospital-acquired infections of staff and patients.
“It’s shocking but not surprising to see so many staff having to take time off with Covid. We are still seeing the impact this year, with members telling us about significant staff absences just in recent days due to Covid, influenza, RSV and whooping cough,” she said. “We have not yet had feedback on the Chief Health Officer John Gerrard’s visits to individual hospitals where he was to talk with staff about infection prevention and control. “We need action sooner rather than later. Queensland Health should consider the expert recommendations in Australian and the World Health Organisation’s research published just last month about air quality in public buildings,” the AMAQ chief said. In early January 2023 Dr Gerrard downgraded Covid protocols in the state from amber to green. Amber required masks in health settings. The AMAQ emphasised in the correspondence to the acting CHO that the recent absences were being reported by their members “as staff absences due to illness are not published so we cannot determine if current rates are higher than in previous periods and could be fairly attributed to the current spread of respiratory viruses in the community”. Queensland Health confirmed that the special pandemic leave provisions for Queensland Health staff are influenced by recommendations from the Communicable Disease Network Australia (CDNA).

Australia as a country is a shit hole for women.

@guardian this morning is reporting on a woman do went looking for help from several police stations and got, wait for it.. fuck all help.

The cops said she was cop shopping. Why is that needed? Three days later, her estranged husband tied her to a clothesline, poured petrol on her, and set her alight, in front of her 3 kids, aged 3 to 9.

Why are so many cops, such rubbish cnuts?

Because they are men.

By Peter Vogel @psvbluemts

I have obtained information about hospital-acquired COVID-19 from Queensland Health. From Jan-22 to June-23 an average of 14 people caught C19 in hospital each day, and one of these died each day. The data only lists deaths in the hospital, we don't know how many died soon after discharge.
The Queensland AMA has written to the CHO "expressing members' concerns about rising COVID cases and inadequate infection controls within Queensland Health hospitals". They have now published the letter and the non-answer here: https://www.ama.com.au/qld/correspondence/CHOcovid

It does not address the doctors' concerns at all. It just says that each hospital should make their own rules, proportionate to the current risk.

In spite of the acknowledged current wave of COVID, here's an example of current guidance from a typical Qld hospital:
Visitors are welcome at Metro South Health facilities, and are asked to help keep patients safe by:

  • practising hand hygiene
  • staying home if you have any flu-like symptoms
  • avoid visiting hospitals, aged care, or disability care centre while you have any cold or flu symptoms.

As well as being totally inadequate, point 3 seems to assume you'll ignore point 2.

The policy of leaving it to individuals to manage their own COVID-19 protection has now been extended to health care generally, resulting in vast disparity between the safety offered by different services. If I buy a fridge, I get to see a star rating and can have confidence that what I buy will have that level of energy efficiency. I can be confident the fridge meets safety standards and it won't electrocute me. If I enter a public building I don't have to check that the fire doors work. But if I am taken to hospital with a broken hip it's pot luck whether I'm exposed to avoidable airborne disease.
