The thing that shocked me when I arrived in is that the vast majority of this gigantic city is suburbs of one floor houses or duplex at the most. It's so low density compared with . I found this website with an interactive population density map that confirms just how sparsely populated this city actually is.

Similar plot for Melbourn. Most ares are light blue and most people live in areas with 2000 people per squared kilometre and almost no one lives in ares with more tan 10000 people per squared kilometre. The population weighted density in 2020 is almost 3700 people per squared kilometre and the peak population density is 16900 people per squared kilometre.

: "The future of Buenos Aires’ controversial public facial recognition system, which has been used to spy on civil society members and has led to erroneous arrests, is still uncertain.

In February, a court in the Argentinian capital ruled that the public surveillance system, known as the Fugitive Facial Recognition System (SNRP), will remain suspended as there is still no agreement on how to audit the technology. No date has been defined on when the system might be re-activated.

The court has instructed the city’s government and civil society groups ODIA, Vía Libre and CELS to come up with an institutional framework, a budget and a clear methodological plan for an audit of the system before its reintroduction. The two sides, however, have been clashing on how to proceed with auditing the software and re-activating the system.

While one side suggested a “black box audit,” the civil society groups, which kickstarted the motion to suspend the system in 2019, have argued that this would be insufficient." https://www.biometricupdate.com/202403/buenos-aires-controversial-facial-recognition-network-remains-in-limbo

A dip into the archive from on this day eight years ago. On that particular February 29th we'd just arrived in and been escorted to the ship we'd be spending the next few weeks on, and as we were on an overnight flight we were aboard early, before most other passengers had arrived in , having the ship mostly to ourselves. We would spend the following day exploring Buenos Aires and it was an incredible city.

Argentina’s labor movement is testing popular support for President Javier Milei’s austerity blitz in a national strike less than two months into his presidency, as he attempts to slash the size of the state and tame triple-digit inflation. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/01/25/world/politics/buenos-aires-protest-milei-reforms/?utm_content=buffer64642&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

Today in Labor History January 16, 1919: Semana Tragica (Tragic week) ended on this date in Buenos Aires. The authorities slaughtered as many as 700 workers and wounded 2,000. The government repression that followed decimated the militant Argentinean anarchist labor movement. From 1902 until 1909, the Federacion Obrera Regional Argentina had waged a series of General Strikes against the bosses and anti-labor legislation. The Semana Tragica began as a strike at the Vasena metal works. On January 3, striking workers fired on the police, wounding three. On January 7, the maritime workers voted for a General Strike for better wages and hours. On that same date, militant workers shot and killed an army lieutenant at the Vasena metal works. The police responded by killing five workers. That night, militant workers killed two more soldiers. On January 8, the waterfront strike began, halting all loading and unloading of cargo. On January 8, hundreds marched in a funeral procession for the workers who had been killed by the cops. Along the way, they attacked property and burned cars. The police fired into the procession, killing several people. Mobs then rampaged throughout Buenos Aires, burning streetcars and buildings, looting sporting goods stores for guns and ammunition. 3,000 stormed the Lacrose Station. The Argentine Chamber of Deputies fought with each other, but took no action on the violence in the streets. The violence and killings continued for days, with right-wing vigilantes joining the police and soldiers, assaulting workers and committing pogroms against the city’s Jews.

Today in Labor History January 7, 1919: Argentina’s "Bloody Week" (AKA Tragic Week) began in Buenos Aires. Workers were demonstrating for the 8-hour work day. The authorities opened fire, killing four and wounding 30. Clashes with the authorities on the day of the funerals left another 50 dead. In response, they called for a General Strike. Paramilitary groups attacked workers in collaboration with the police. By January 16 the authorities had fully crushed the strike, killing as many as 700 and wounding 2,000. Many of the victims were Jewish-Russian and Italian anarchist immigrants targeted by racists and anti-Bolshevik hysteria.
