Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Friday introduced a motion to vacate against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), threatening a vote to remove him.
The #Senate was expected to take up & pass the bill easily, sending it to President #Biden in time for it to become #law before a midnight deadline on Fri.
The measure would package together 6 spending bills, extending funding through Sept 30 for dozens of federal programs covering #agriculture, #energy & the #environment, #transportation, #housing, the #DOJ & #veterans. Top lawmakers were still negotiating spending bills for the other half of the #government over the same period, including for the #Pentagon, which #Congress must pass by March 22 to avert a lapse in #funding.
#Congress plans to use 2 packages of #legislation to fund the entire govt. The #House must vote on the first package this week, then move it to the #Senate for a vote. Legislative action must be complete before the Mar 8 funding deadline that was set late last week to avoid a partial #GovernmentShutdown.
The House on Thurs approved #legislation to extend the expiration date for #FederalFunding later into March, sending the measure to prevent a partial govt shutdown that was set for Sat to the #Senate, where it is expected the pass.
“…what neither Mr. #Grassley nor any of the other #Republicans who amplified the claims said in their breathless statements was that #FBI officials had warned them repeatedly to be cautious about the accusation, because it was #uncorroborated & its credibility unknown.”
"None of this [dysfunction] is new information. The GOP isn’t in Washington, D.C. to solve anything. They’re there to literally bring the federal government to its knees until it can be turned into an engine for authoritarian intent. They’re not there to address any issues, especially if it’s during a Democratic presidency."
"As the headline of Carl Hulse’s analysis in the New York Times puts it: 'On the Border, Republicans Set a Trap, Then Fell Into It.'
In a speech at the White House today, President Joe Biden urged Congress to pass the bill. He thanked the negotiators who have worked so hard on it, and blamed Trump for shooting it down."
"Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on overall spending levels for the current fiscal year that could help avoid a partial government shutdown later this month."
Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the fmr #House#speaker who was ousted from his position in Oct in a revolt by hard-right members, will not seek reelection to his congressional seat & will retire from Congress at the end of this month, he announced Wed.
“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” #McCarthy said in a WSJ op-ed.
#McCarthy’s #retirement will bring to an end a 16-yr #House career that saw him quickly rise through the ranks of #Republican leadership, culminating w/his stint as #speaker. His ouster marked the 1st time in history that the House voted to remove its #leader, a move that threw the chamber into a period of #instability.
McCarthy’s departure before the end of his term means #California Gov. Gavin #Newsom (D) will have to call a special #election to replace him.
In the meantime, #McCarthy’s departure will further narrow a fractious #Republicanmajority in the #House at a time when the chamber faces major decisions on #government spending & foreign #aid.
McCarthy’s term was set to end in January 2025. He represents #California’s 20th District, which covers much of the state’s Central Valley.
Rep. #PatrickMcHenry (R-#NC), who served as acting #House#speaker for 3 wks in Oct while #GOP lawmakers struggled to unite behind a leader, will not seek reelection next year…. #McHenry, 48, was 1st elected to the House in 2004, and represents #NorthCarolina’s 10th congressional district.

George Santos will not run for re-election, MAGA Mike averted a government shutdown, temporarily, but only thanks to Democrats, Tuberville is certifiable and more from Howie Klein at DownWithTyranny.com today.
All in a day's time, Kevin McCarthy (R) elbowed Tim Burchett (R) in the back; Markwayne Mullin (R) challenged Teamster Sean O'Brien to a fight; and James Comer (R) called Jared Moskowitz (D) a smurf. All this in Congress….
Jay Kuo wonders if it's time to shut the GOP down, since it's clearly melting down in real time, and this endangers the whole nation.
#Emmer (MN), the #House maj whip, was elected as the #GOP pick on a 5th ballot in an internal race that drew 9 #Republicans. It’s not clear, however, that he has enough support to be elected on the House floor. To prevail, Emmer would need a majority of the full chamber.
Emmer, who has been in #Congress since 2015, previously chaired the #National Republican Congressional Cmte — the House campaign arm — for 4 yrs.
#MikeJohnson served as a member of #Trump's #legal defense team during both the 2019 & 2020 impeachments.
#Johnson signed, along w/126 other #Republicans, an amicus brief in support of the BS #KenPaxton#SCOTUS case Texas v. Pennsylvania challenging President Joe #Biden’s victory (the Supreme Court declined to even hear the case).
When it comes to #Congress, Americans have come to expect a certain baseline of #dysfunction.
..here we languish, with the government’s most basic functions held hostage by a conference divided over everything from ideological differences to petty personal slights: Candidate X broke his promise! Candidate Y ignores me! Candidate Z never votes for my bills! It’s like watching a pack of middle schoolers hopped up on hormones and Skittles.
