"Biden is not evil. Trump is truly evil," Robert Reich says in a statement I excerpted here yesterday critiquing the "voting for the lesser of two evils" argument that justifies putting Trump back into the White House by voting third-party or refraining from voting.
Negative responses to Reich's statement run the gamut:
To say that Trump is evil is not to define his essence and humanity as evil. It's to say that he has a proven track record of doing clearly ascertained evil, and that his promise to do even more evil if he regains the White House deserves serious attention — if evil is a matter that concerns us at all.
The attempt to depict Biden as equally evil, with a proven track record of evil, requires us to enter the realm of fantasy and make-believe.
Biden may well be imperfect and short-sighted. We may rightly want to talk about his response to the situation in Israel and Gaza as complicit in evil. But, as the bogus impeachment hearings have shown us over and over, we can press the charge that Biden is evil only if we fabricate "facts" that do not exist and if we seek to respond to real, blatant evil on one side with immature both-sides arguments designed to blind us to the real evil that exists on one side.
If we're going to say that Biden is complicit in evil due to his response to the situation in Israel and Gaza, then I wonder how we'll deal with the possibility that we ourselves may be complicit in evil if we use our energy to tear away at Biden and in that way assist Trump in regaining the White House? I wonder why, in fact, we want to respond to the observation that Trump is evil by introducing arguments that Biden is also complicit in evil?
I wonder why we want to single Biden out as complicit in the evil we think Israel is doing in Gaza, when a much bigger system of support for Israel, a system including many powerful people in many places outside the US as well as in the US, needs to be addressed with this argument?
Why are we choosing to single Biden out as if he's uniquely responsible for this system? And why now, when attacking him can only assist Trump?
If we're going to talk about complicity in systems of evil, and if we're going to be honest, then let's also talk about our own compliciity in many systems of evil in the world around us — systems that we inherit, which enmesh us, which are well-nigh impossible to avoid if we want to live in a very flawed world and do business in a very flawed world….
On a daily basis, we deal with and support corporations that do serious damage to the world.
