Mastodon scheint für viele zu reichen, nur ist Mastodon nicht alles
Being fed up with the shenanigans at the walled garden social media hubs like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram I was on the lookout for something more exciting and less frustrating (keyword “Enshittification”). In November 2022 I set up an account on a Mastodon instance and quickly after that, two accounts on different Pixelfed instances. I wanted to use them for separate purposes: Mastodon like Twitter, and Pixelfed like Instagram for my Home Cooking and Photography interests.
Because of the nature of the Fediverse with each of its different social media services spread over many instances, it seemed tricky at the beginning to find accounts to connect to, especially for Home Cooking. At some point I read about Groups and I thought that’s a concept worth trying to find more people with the same interest. I set up a Home Cooking group on chirp.social and pretty quickly found some stumbling stones in the way I was trying to use it.
That’s when I first realised that most things in the Fediverse work quite well as long as you stick with Mastodon as your base because many useful additions are geared towards it, groups and WordPress blog linking are good examples for that. But there are many more social media services which are supposed to interconnect with each other using the ActivityPub protocol and not a lot of information about which service works best for what. When you find a problem there is hardly anybody who had the same kind of issue as it seems that most people stay within just one service bubble. So I started joining other services and started following my own accounts just for the fun of it.
At the point of writing I have accounts on these services (the plan is to try even more):
Mastodon (similar to Twitter)
Pixelfed (similar to Instagram)
Friendica (similar to Facebook)
Firefish (was Calckey) (similar to Twitter)
Hubzilla (seems like the grandparent of social media, but don’t let the seemingly very simple interface lure you into underestimating its powers)
Diaspora (I haven’t had a lot of time to test yet but because it uses a different protocol its interconnectivity is very limited)
WordPress (a blog service)
In addition I have a group administrator account on chirp.social and have interactions with a group on gup.pe
Juggling my various accounts I got so confused about what works and what doesn’t between them that I set up a big table that I was completing bit by bit, ticking off open questions in a more strategic way. Some issues that I found are caused by the specific setup of a service, others have no explanation whatsoever. Especially commenting on posts from a different service and then answering them can be a sticky issue. I should probably join GitHub to log everything, but I have no time for that kind of engagement right now.
I realised quickly that the table format is not the clearest way to show what is going on between services, so with my latest new account that joined the Fediverse (this WordPress blog), I decided to write a whole post highlighting what works and what doesn’t from the perspective of a blog user (WordPress and the Fediverse). The plan is to do this for the other services too.
This is where I got to so far with my table (updated 4/12/23, can be downloaded as PDF below the image):
🟢✅✅ Green fields means that interactions between services seem to work well in both directions – or not at all (but intentionally so, e.g. because of a different protocol).
🟡✅💢 Yellow fields means there are either some one sided problems or some weird things happen that I still need to research further.
🔴💢❌ Red fields means something does not work at all.
⚪️❤️ White fields with hearts contain short comments about the services.
It’s best to ignore these for now as I’m still learning about the ins and outs of some of them and most likely do them a disservice out of ignorance.
⚪️ Just white means that I have not tested yet.
DISCLAIMER: The table is obviously not complete in any way and based on my personal experiences trying out pretty basic tasks. Sometimes problems are caused by just one single instance and how code is implemented there.
At the same time services get updates and issues I have seen might just magically disappear.
Or new ones appear. 😅

Ich schreibe einen Artikel über den #FediverseFachtag und in dem Rahmen natürlich auch über das #Fediverse . Zielgruppe sind Leute, die wahrscheinlich zum Großteil noch gar nix vom Fediverse gehört haben.
Dazu bin ich dabei, eine Tabelle zu erstellen, in der einige Fedi-Dienste sowie deren Haupt-/ besondere Funktionen aufgeführt werden sollen.
Das ist der derzeitige Entwurf:

Ein Vergleich mit kommerziellen Plattformen ist natürlich immer nur zum Teil passend. Ich kenne auch keinen der kommerziellen Dienste aus eigener Erfahrung, aber für die avisierte Zielgruppe kann so ein Vergleich vielleicht trotzdem eine hilfreiche Orientierung sein. Vielleicht gibt es da aber auch Vergleiche, die passender sind. Einige Dienste (bspw. Medium, Podigee) kannte ich auch noch nicht mal vom Namen her, sondern habe das nur aus ähnlichen Vergleichstabellen übernommen.
Zu den "besonderen Funktionen":
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a. Hubzilla haben so viele Funktionen, dass diese im Rahmen der Tabelle nur exemplarisch aufgeführt werden können und die Auswahl ist subjektiv. Hier wäre die Frage, ob das eine passende Auswahl ist, ob besonders wichtige fehlen oder ob andere Funktionen wichtiger oder besonderer sind.

Hast du schon einmal etwas von #OpenWebAuth gehört? Das könnte für Menschen interessant sein, die verschiedene Dienste im Fediverse nutzen wollen, ohne sich auf den verschiedenen Anwendungen neu anmelden zu wollen.
Stellen wir uns vor, du hast einen Account auf einer Microblog Instanz, willst aber von Zeit zu Zeit über einen Fotodienst Bilder mit deiner Community teilen oder über eine Videoplattform Videos hochladen.
OpenWebAuth stellt sicher, dass du dich anmelden kannst, ohne einen neuen Account anzulegen. Du nutzt die Ressourcen auf der Plattform, um das zu tun, wofür sie gebaut wurde. Natürlich nur mit den Rechten, die dir die Plattform einräumt.
Geht nicht? Doch das geht!
Als erste Fediverse Plattformen haben #Hubzilla und #friendicaOpenWebAuth integriert. Damit kann z.B. ein Friendica Nutzender sich mit seiner Identität auf einer Hubzilla Instanz Ressourcen greifen, um z.B. ein Wiki neu anzulegen, oder einen bestehenden Wiki Eintrag zu ändern, Bilder hochzuladen und diese in das Wiki einzubinden. Dafür benötigt der Friendica Nutzenden keinen Account auf der Hubzilla Instanz.
Wäre doch ein Traum, wenn das auch bei anderen Projekten funktionieren würde, oder?
Jetzt habe ich zum Angucken und Austesten ein Hubzilla-Konto angelegt, aber verstehe überhaupt nicht, wie ich darauf über Activity Pub zugreifen kann, weil ich dieses Konto bisher nur hier über Loma.ml gefunden habe; auf Mastodon, Firefish oder Pixelfed sehe ich es nicht. Auf Hubzilla sehe ich auch nicht, dass ich von hier folge. 😩 Ich bin schon alle möglichen Settings durchgegangen, habe ein bisschen gewartet, habe verschiedene Adressangaben ausprobiert, aber es geht alles nicht. 🤷🏼 hub.hubzilla.de/channel/sylkew… hub.hubzilla.de/chanview?f=&ur… @sylkeweb

While the above examples can be used for images, Pixelfed was built for, well, images. It was made to cater for uploading photos ah sharing your digital artworks.
Meanwhile, Bookwyrm is best for, can you guess it? #Books! It features bookshelves where you can categorise your collection. You can also track your reading. Leave reviews. #Authors can too, if they want.
It's no different to comparing the old #Twitter vs #Facebook vs #Instagram vs #Goodreads. All of it can host photos and albums, but Instagram is focused on sharing images. Twitter for #microblogging. Facebook for socialising (or ads). Goodreads for books and reviews.
The difference? The latter are disconnected. While the former, the fediverse, are interoperable.
It's interesting sitting here on an old version of #Calckey seeing someone on #Mastodon server telling their fellow user that posting to unlisted will opt-out of #search when I can see Unlisted posts in my antennas quite easily though I believe this has been rightly rectified in the newest versions of [#Firefish / #Iceshrimp but need to confirm]. Being hidden from the Explore tab on Mastodon is not the same as being unsearchable across the fediverse. Frankly, there's little understanding even among admins across the #fediverse about what's a Mastodon / Mastodon API function that is federated to other Mastodon servers but doesn't translate well outside of Mastodon on other #ActivityPub connected platforms like #Misskey and it's forks, #Hubzilla and #Friendica, or rapidly growing platforms like #Lemmy and #Kbin. Kbin also scrapes posts from across the fediverse and puts them into its own magazines.
Unfortunately simple, up-to-date documentation doesn't really exist to explain the realities of federation vs what your admin said was the reality. AP was not built with privacy in mind, and 'security through obscurity' was mostly a Mastodon thing from when folks thought either the Mastoverse was almost the dark web, or the whole fediverse [which has never been the case], and Google et al weren't interested in scraping it.
Unfortunately we have a cadre of devs across all fedi platforms who'll give glowing lip-service to both the fedi and ActivityPub histories of being built by queer or other minority identities but still won't work on giving folks the granular #privacy and #safety controls that weren't included in those protocols, and whose feature roadmaps now just look like bird site 2.0 funded by the milquetoast liberals in political tech who provide their seed money.
Beyond Mastodon and GoToSocial, every other fediverse project treats posting to public as opting in to search and indexing. Indeed, this is pretty much how the ActivityPub protocol handles such too.

If you are exploring the fediverse through the #Mastodon software, feel free to explore other platforms like #Streams#Calckey#Hubzilla#Friendica#Akkoma to mention a few, for your usual “status updates” (and more) UI/UX.
If you want a platform more focused on photos and images, then there is #Pixelfed. Or, you want bookshelves and tracking what you've read, or leaving #book reviews, there is #BookWyrm.
But the beauty of it all, all of these are connected to the fediverse. You can follow any user regardless of which software they are using; AND regardless which server (domain name) they signed-up for.
Im Umfeld der #META Diskussion scheint es wieder ein größeres Interesse an #disapora zu geben. Ein Fediverse Projekte, dass vielen hier unbekannt ist und dennoch eine breite Nutzerbasis genießt. Für viele #G+ Nutzende, was es die Fluchtburg, als das Projekt seinerzeit durch google gestoppt wurde. Aber auch schon davor war die Diaspora ein Zuhause für viele Enthusiasten, denen die private, persönliche Kommunikation wichtiger war, als der Hype und die Aufregungswellen, durch die sich die kommerziellen Plattformen auszeichnen. Daher gibt es, wie im gesamten Fediverse, auch dort keine Algorithmen, viele verschiedene Instanzen (Pod) und unterschiedliche Kulturen & Themen, die sich über Hashtags zusammen finden.
Anders als die meisten Projekte im Fediverse nutzt Diaspora kein#activity-pub als Protokoll, sonder einen eigenen Standard und segelt damit unterhalb der Sichtlinie von Facebook. Damit bildet es ein eigenständiges Netzwerk ohne Mastodon, Lemmy oder andere AP basierende Fediverse Projekte. Lediglich #Friendica und #Hubzilla sind in der Lage mit diesen Netzwerk zu kommunizieren, was damit zusammen hängt, dass diese Projekte neben AP, den eigenen Protokollen auch das Diaspora Protokoll unterstützten und damit den ursprünglichen Gedanken des Fediverse weiter leben lassen.

Lemmy ist eine ist eine Art Forensoftware im #Fediverse: Man kann Foren (die in Lemmy "Communitys" genannt werden) abonnieren, Links teilen und an Diskussionen teilnehmen. Ausführlicher haben @Tealk und ich es hier beschrieben.
Du kannst zum einen #Lemmy -Accounts folgen, dann erscheinen die Beiträge in Deiner Timeline und Du kannst darauf antworten, sie teilen usw.
Zum anderen kannst Du auch von Mastodon etc. aus Beiträge in Lemmy-Communitys erstellen.
Einer Community folgen:
Am einfachsten ist es, den Accountnamen vollständig in die Suche zu tippen bzw. eben die URL zu kopieren ins Suchfeld. Das gilt sowohl für Communitys (z.B. [ät]fediversede@feddit.de) als auch für Lemmy-Accounts (z.B. @caos ist mein Lemmy-Account) als auch für einzelne Beiträge in Lemmy (z.B. feddit.de/post/964225 ist ein Beitrag in Lemmy).
Beiträge in Communitys erstellen:
Beiträge in Lemmy-Communitys kannst Du erstellen, indem Du den Communty-Account taggst (deshalb habe ich oben [ät] eingefügt, weil sonst der Beitrag in dem Forum landen kann.
Das ist im Prinzip genauso wie bei Friendica-Foren: Wenn der Account mit @ getaggt wird, teilt er den Beitrag und der Beitrag erscheint dann auch im Forum.
Das ist zum Beispiel ein Beitrag, den ich von Mastodon aus erstellt habe im Testforum von feddit: feddit.de/post/772628
Von Mastodon und Calckey etc. aus ist nur zu beachten: Der Beginn des Posts/ der erste Absatz wird der Titel des Foren-Beitrags, da Mastodon kein Überschriftenfeld hat.
Im ersten Absatz bitte keine Hashtags und keine Links verwenden, die werden in der Überschrift nicht richtig angezeigt!

Wenn Du eine interessante Community gefunden hast, kannst Du deren URL in das Suchfeld reinkopieren, um dem Community-Account zu folgen (s. Bild 3) oder das Handle des Accounts in der Form @communityname eingeben (in Friendica etc. auch mit !) .
Die vergangenen Beiträge werden dann oft nicht angezeigt, aber die, die dann in Zukunft kommen, erscheinen in Deiner Timeline.
Was nicht geht von Mastodon etc. aus, ist eine eigene Community zu erstellen. Dafür braucht es einen Lemmy- oder kbin-Account. Sonst geht eigentlich fast alles (bis auf Bilder in Antworten, die werden m.W. nicht föderiert, siehe im Detail hier).
Wenn Du vielen bzw. sehr aktiven Communitys folgst, kann es v.a. in Mastodon etwas unübersichtlich werden. Einen übersichtlichere Ansicht gibt es, wenn Du es auf die Seite der Community selbst ansiehst, also extern im Browser öffnest.

da das #Fediverse immer noch am wachsen ist und es jetzt wohl gerade größere Wanderungsbewegungen weg von #Reddit zu #Lemmy und dem Fork #kbin gibt, hier mal ein aktualisiertes Übersichtsdiagramm um zu zeigen, dass das Fediverse nicht nur aus #Mastodon besteht.

Das Plugin implementiert das ActivityPub-Protokoll in einen Word-Press-Blog, was bedeutet, dass Blogbeiträge im Fediverse verfolgt werden können. Darüber hinaus werden Antworten aus dem Fediverse automatisch zu Kommentaren im Blogbeitrag.
Having second thoughts about my self-hosted #Mastodon instance, it’s just too much of a resource hog for a single user / small instance on a 4 core / 4G vServer if you want to run other stuff (#writefreely is live, #pixelfed to be installed!) as well. On the other hand it is very nice that the software is stable, reliable and well designed. So either I need to move to a bigger server or decommission my self-hosted profile and look into other options for micro / macro blogging self-hosting again. I did like #gotosocial but the current version doesn’t install on my #yunohost properly. Tried #Akkoma and #Pleroma - weren’t my thing, can’t get over the design. I do like #Friendica and its possibilities but it is a bit clunky at times and I have some doubts if protocols other than the quasi standard #ActivityPub have much of a main stream future which kinda could make the additional Friendica features a little islandish. Same applies to #Hubzilla which I only start testing. Leaves #Misskey and #Calckey which could be good options but not sure about the reliability and gameplan there, I don’t want to tinker every night on my server so #Calckey probably need to become a little more stable first, #Misskey seems to have no current version on YunoHost, so need to explore other install options… Any thoughts very welcome! @fediversenews@fediversede
