Sorry to learn of the passing of Prof. Alan Waggoner here in #Pittsburgh a couple of days ago.
He was an all round terrific person, besides being a great scientist. He developed the #Fluorescent Cyanine dyes (Cy3 Cy5 and others in the series) that had a significant impact on biological #imaging , in the 1990s
Seeing the Mind: Spectacular Images from Neuroscience, and What They Reveal about Our Neuronal Selves by Stanislas Dehaene, 2023
A lavishly illustrated and accessibly explained deep dive into the major new findings from cognitive neuroscience.
Who are we? To this age-old question, contemporary neuroscience gives a simple answer: we are exquisite neuronal machines.
We’re back with direct imaging with Masayuki Kuzuhara.
They used the #Subaru#telescope to observe nearby accelerating stars and search for substellar companions.
They discovered 4 substellar companions, one of which is the brown dwarf HIP 21152 B. The spectrum reveals water and methane. They further modelled the orbit, giving them a dynamical mass of around 28 Mjup.#ExSSV
Swung by the hospital's imaging dept for DVD of my latest PET scan, then explored the world of “how to view DICOM files on a Mac” (OsiriX, Weasis work).
I’m sure there’s settings that might improve the imaging, but it's pretty miraculous to go through your body layer by layer, and find the remaining tumor glowing like some kind of nuclear waste I accidentally ate.
Then I hit the “render as 3d object” and that freaked me out a bit. 🧐 #cancersucks#catscan#imaging
Are you doing cell biology or biomedical research? Light microscopy-based imaging? If a facility for (multiplexed) imaging would pop up in your department, what would be your expectations and wishes for it? If you (would) run one, what is crucial?
I’ve applied for a (multiplexed) imaging facility manager job and would like to collect a few use scenarios (think tools, training, data analysis) to prepare for the interview. #CellBiology#Microscopy#Imaging#Biology#LightMicroscopy#Science
At the beginning of the year I received notice I've got my first funding as a new PI. It's for an ambitious project to look at how the main olfactory system in mice enables individualized social interactions. I wanted to hire a postdoc before, but now I really really want to hire a postdoc. If you know anyone who is at the right stage and might think the picture attached to this post looks cool, please can you share? There's a lot more to it than what's in the diagrams here.
Beehive FLIR. The bright yellow area is warmer--where the hive is clustered. If you put your ear or a stethoscope up to the side of the hive, you can hear the colony gently beating their wings to generate heat. #beekeeping#flir#infrared
Same beehive with slightly different tones. Will be interesting to see what size this hive actually is. I am going to say 3-4 frames, in the bottom hive. #beekeeping#bees#flir#infrared#imaging#hive#beehive
