#Linux users, where do you get your wallpapers? Looking for something cool for my new #KDE Neon desktop. You can also share yours! But remember to add ALT or tag with #ALT4Me so others can help if you are out of spoons
The #Fedora 40 Release Party just ended and it was great as usual to connect with familiar faces and get updates on current and upcoming things for the project. Fedora is alive and well with a thriving global community!
There's been so many Windows enshitification moments where people say this is our best opportunity for helping more people get their freedom trough #Linux.
Now we have maybe the best of these moments yet – W11 demanding new PCs, W10 being killed off, and this whole Recall shit.
Yet, after all this, I've never seen any really newbie friendly website explaining why and how to try Linux – with simple text and elegant design.
It seems to me the #Gnome designers would be perfect for making this.
On top of the performance optimizations that Milan has done in #GNOMESoftware some months ago, I'm proposing my one-liner search performance trick for the #GNOME software center app store thingy that people love to hate on #Linux, to reduce the jankiness and improve performance further for most practical purposes. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/merge_requests/2032
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News! In this one, we have a terrible feature being added to #Windows, we have the # KDE #Plasma 6.1 beta, and a 5 year plan for #GNOME!
my #iphone6 smashed on the floor. touchscreen is slowly degrading; some letters impossible to type; and some buttons impossible to click...
Starting to think i have reached my limit... (cc @limitesnumeriques )
The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:
◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe
I believe #Microsoft knew that #recall would generate this kind of backlash. They just don't care, they're testing limits of what they can get away with ... After all #google and #facebook got away (mostly) with what they're doing. It's the slow boiling frog method ... and people are gullible enough to buy whatever BS big tech marketing is selling ...
No i do szeroko pojetych zabaw z Linuxem oczywiscie ;)
Is there a non-dev oriented #Linux distribution that is as light weight as AntiX but has strong minimalist opinionated defaults (one app per feature, all consistent) ?
One that would be fine on a 2010 mini and to be used by people averse to tech (read mail, browse web, libre office and that’s it).
ah, IT issues... yesterday I tripped a fuse when making dinner (the electric kettle somehow creates a power surge just before boiling, and when the oven runs at the same time it gets tripped).
When I put it back my small rpi server in the living room all of a sudden makes issues. It runs, and I can connect to it from the outside, but somehow not from inside my home network.
But I ping it and it seems to be on... but I just can't seem to ssh onto it anymore.
Well y'all, after a couple of false starts, I have successfully blown away the prior Ubuntu/Windows 10 dual boot setup on my ancient PC laptop, and replaced it with Bazzite. Bazzite is apparently a gaming-friendly flavor of Linux, and looks a lot like the Linux flavor on my Steam Deck.
It took some patience and tweaking, but now the system is successfully booting into the OS. Steam and Lutris are confirmed present. And I'm installing Skyrim as we speak.
The big hilarious question to answer here will be, will I actually be able to run Skyrim? And if so, will I get the same hilariously bad FPS I got without mods? We're talking 8-15fps right around Whiterun, LOL.
Think I need to start planning for a total free software future. Been using Windows 10 for work and because it’s tolerable. Changed to VS Code because it’s a very good lightweight IDE. This #Recall spyware has forced me to conclude that #Microsoft have turned evil. I was optimistically naïve to think they might not be, in hindsight. So, must look to changing to Linux Mint everywhere, and getting my #NeoVim setup perfected. (May revisit #Helix, if it has a tree view now). As for Apple.. hmm.
@M0CUV to get back on topic: kudos for considering #FOSS software stacks. #Linux Mint is a great choice! Helix replaced neovim completely for me, but that probably comes down entirely to your workflow...
The efficiency boost is honestly mind blowing. And that is with so many keystrokes to wrap my head around. Absolutely worth the money and lets me work at least four times as fast as with the previous setups.
Would I have liked to keep on using Linux? Yes but at this point if one is doing more than just browsing the web and reading E-Mails it is very hard to recommend.
@WestphalDenn I just bought a #Lenovo#Legion9 and had the opposite experience.
I keep hearing people say things about #Linux v #Windows which aren't true, and in a recent discussion they turned out to be out of date opinions from someone not using it.
Obviously you were, but I take issue that it's only good for basic tasks. I do all sorts and it just gets better while Windows degrades and spys.
W11 cursor was jerky, sending all cicks home. Noticeably faster when I switched to #Ubuntu 24.
