My new home server is now fully operational with with and running on docker. Ditched because it’s cumbersome and integrates poorly with

In the meantime, I’ve bought some style USB pads and a case for the 4 . No expectations, because they were cheap AF…🤡 It just didn’t feel right playing those classics on a modern pad and I have just one…🤷🏻‍♂️ I want to share the sentiment with my wife and the kids…🥰

I've been fighting my new home server, replacing older model. This is exactly why I low key hate open source software and linux-based systems. Sure, it's stable once configured. But if you do it once every few months it's fuckin' different every time and the things you had to do to make it work then, might or might not work now... For someone that doesn't do Linux very often it's a shitshow...😞 There, I've said it!😆

Now... Once I've moved everything to the new , I can forge the old one into the ultimate machine...😆

Finally I managed to get my 8BitDo SNES controllers to work with my . That was weirdly hard, because on 3 this just worked. But now I am using my granny RPi 1 with a bluetooth dongle and shit hit the fan.

Anyhow, I could finally play some old Smurfs game with my kid. He just jumped around with a Smurf all the time, so we didn't get far. But that totally rocked.

My first mac was an iMac 20" bought in September 2008. It's 16 years old and hasn't been powered on in 8 years but still looks new.

So, why not give it new life as a dedicated emulator machine? 🕹

It has a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo (64-bit) and 4 GB of RAM, which should be good.

The 320 GB HDD was OK, but better transplant the 250 GB SSD upgrade out of my first macbook.

When I first booted Ubuntu LTS off an USB stick, I was suprised how smooth it ran. Plus, it supported all the hardware! 😮

1/3 🧵

The iMac showing its innards, but stil with the LCD panel attached (the disk drive is behind it, so it had to be dissassembled next). It has never been opened, so it was pretty dusty, and it smelled of old rags.

And here it is, my 16 year old iMac 20" inside one of the closet compartments in my home office. You have to play while standing, just like in the arcades of yore. 🤗

This setup works really well for the games I want to play on it — arcade and home console stuff up to the late 1990's. It barely goes above 30% of one CPU core on anything. The CRT shaders I selected work plenty smooth. 🪶🧈

The screen is very good even by today's standards. 🖥

3/3 🧵

There are some advanced shaders that simulate all kinds of CRT quirks, but those run rather slow on the iMac's ATI 2600HD graphics card. Fortunately, I'm a simple person and I just wanted decent scanline simulation. And those run with no noticeable performance hit.

deflating three 7z files and compiling modules still usable, no stutters, really impressed. Will have to try a couple of my old Xbox games on this if it works. However, I underestimated the size of the USB stick I'd need…

hi trying to make that work using Pi3, a HDMItoVga converter, a J-Pac II interface and and Hantarex Polo 20. So far the closes I can get "I can see something" but vertically scrolling away is with :

hdmi_cvt=320 240 60 1 0 1 0
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=90

If I use tvservice -m DMT I see

mode 90: 320x121 @ 59Hz 4:3, clock:25MHz x4 interlaced

I still can't get a stable image, any suggestions ? I can't find anything online that suits me.

Thanks.

deanjimmy,
@deanjimmy@nerdculture.de avatar

@Schdadia

If I had a 3D printer I would 100% build a GBA-style emulation machine with a Raspberry Pi CM4 base. But, I would have 4 face buttons, two joycon-sized sticks (the GuliKit Hall Effect ones), and extra shoulder buttons. It would definitely be an interesting project.

What if had a SIG that shipped with stuff like emulators, serial tools, and various language compilers like FreeBASIC, OpenCOBOL, etc, and we could ship it with 8-bit pixel art wallpapers of the current release art?

Hmm, a 4b 8GB for all my needs?

I wanna play old games as easy as possible.

Until now I bought Mini-Consoles/-Systems or Collections on modern consoles and

But this is not satisfying any longer plus: it costs ya!

I would love to have ONE device that can play starting from VCS via 8Bit- & 16Bit up to games & maybe some home computer stuff.

Is this possible? What would I need (except a Pi, doh).

I am eger to hear from your exp.:)

Wintermute_BBS,

@AndyGER I'm using a Pi 3 B+ and - works nice, even runs

yelof,

@vwbusguy @AndyGER came here to say the same. It's great! I've only struggled to get Apple IIe ROMs working, but all other platforms in work very nicely, from my experience.
