Has anyone ever launched a very expensive #satellite with very expensive #science cameras and forgotten to take the lens cap off?

"The world's first wooden satellite has been built by Japanese researchers who said their tiny cuboid craft is scheduled to be carried into space on a SpaceX rocket in September."

CBS News reports: "The creators expect the wooden material will burn up completely when the device re-enters the atmosphere -- potentially providing a way to avoid the creation of metal particles when a retired satellite returns to Earth."

1999 plan from (the colorful timepiece folks) to have the Russians deploy a that would transmit messages provided by Swatch fans back to Earth via amateur 2m frequencies.

The messages, gathered via the Swatch Web site, related to the Swatch company’s campaign to establish the “Swatch Beat” as a new “global concept of time.”

Needless to say, this aroused some controversy in the community.Transmissions never took place.

Luckily is not alone: NASA's can compensate for most of the gap. This map shows the same day 11 Feb 2024 for the merged SMAP/SMOS thin ice thickness.

A govt stmnt said #Israel's comms minister signed orders to "act immediately", but at least one lawmaker who supported the closure said #AlJazeera could still try to block it in court.

The measure… will include closing Al Jazeera's offices in Israel, #confiscating broadcast equipment, cutting off the channel from #cable & #satellite …& blocking its #websites.

ESA : First ‘glory’ on hellish distant world?

@interessant
www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Cheops/First_glory_on_hellish_distant_world

For the first time, potential signs of the rainbow-like ‘glory effect’ have been detected on a planet outside our Solar System. Glory are colourful concentric rings of light that occur only under peculiar conditions.

Data from ESA’s sensitive Characterising ExOplanet Satellite, Cheops, along with several other ESA and NASA missions, suggest this delicate phenomenon is beaming straight at Earth from the hellish atmosphere of ultra-hot gas giant WASP-76b, 637 light-years away.
