Many people have switched from Twitter to Mastodon, but not everyone who followed me before on Twitter knows that I'm active here also. Will you help me increase my reach on Mastodon? Share this post, boost it or comment and let me know why you're following me. Maybe with some smart hashtags. Thank you! 👍 😊
On 20 Nov, 2 missiles hit a hospital in Selydove, #Ukraine. Although no MSF staff were harmed, several people in the hospital were injured and 3 people were killed.
This is the 2nd attack within a week on a hospital in Ukraine where MSF is present. #UkraineWar
Recommended follow list for Ukraine war on Mastodon
Here are my recommendations for coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Only accounts active recently and you can easily import them from a file. They are split into two different lists by type.
Ukraine: OSINT & war updates
This list mostly has accounts posting quickly about daily events of the war and doing open source intelligence.
The import file relies on the List import feature recently added to Mastodon. I have noticed the list import results in a few accounts sometimes ending up in their separate list by the same name so you may have to fix that manually afterwards if this happens on your instance. If many people are on an older Mastodon version and want it I can also post a follows file that will work for those.
Import instructions:
Sign into your instance on the web
go to settings (Gear icon)
Choose Import and Export -> Import
For import type choose "Lists" (could also be "Translation missing: en.imports.types.lists" if there is an issue with the localization).
Select "merge" to only add to your current follows/lists so nothing you have gets deleted
"The attacks signal the approach of a pivotal point in the war. If the Ukrainian counteroffensive liberates a significant swath of territory and sets Russian forces back on their heels, it would offer hope of an early end to the conflict. Failure could doom Ukraine to a protracted gruelling struggle with no end in sight, and international pressure to cede territory."
Finally reading my history I learn that Putin followed US-supported drunk Boris Yeltsin. While Putin emerged from Yeltsin's own ranks, he was the electorate’s expectable reaction to the shock doctrine and the weak leading figure that made it all possible.
A better global power, with proper intelligence, functional think tanks and caring politicians would have seen this coming. Or did they?
HAVANA (AP) — Cuban authorities have arrested 17 people in connection with what they described as a network to recruit Cuban nationals to fight for Russia in Ukraine....
We still have many world leaders and accounts on #mastodon claiming #genocide in #gaza but have never spoken out against the genocide by #russia in #ukraine.
Aid bill for Ukraine finally passes, with the all-important 155mm cannon shells & long-range weapons & continuation plan. Because this will take a while.
Finally, we can expect Ukraine to be able to hit Russia on an equal footing, not outgunned 5-to-1 and banned from hitting the actual supplies far outside Ukrainian borders.
That’s going to change a lot of things.
Slava Ukraïni!
For those worried about escalation in #Ukraine, recognize that if #Russia wins, it is emboldened to go further. You aren't dealing with a rational actor in the leadership of Russia, you are dealing with #fascism. The best way to minimize the chance of WWIII is for Russia to lose the #UkraineWar.
I won't tell you the chance of nuclear conflagration is zero. But I will tell you that yielding to nuclear threats only ensures more threats. Bullying only learns when it loses.
■ Most combat engagements this year so far, 3rd highest since start of reporting
■ High casualties but equipment losses below 7-day average
■ Unfavorable strike ratio development; more 🇷🇺 strikes, fewer 🇺🇦 ones
■ Oryx: 39 🇷🇺 30 🇺🇦 added to records (net addition); 30-day ratio down to 2.5x
This is what happens when the alliance promises Zelensky 300,000 response troops for the war.
The question over how “involved” the U.S. is in the Ukraine War is becoming increasingly rhetorical, as President Biden quietly signed an executive order on Thursday authorizing the call up of “the reserve and selected members of the individual ready reserve”
Every wednesday, Danish tv airs my favourite tv programe "Krigens Døgn" ("Day of the War") about the #UkraineWar
A couple of interesting talking points from todays programe, which had the always knowleageble @anderspuck among the guests:
The Russian attempt of a blitzkrieg on Avdiivka was made for political reasons
If Ukraine is able to break through the Russian forces in Adviivka, they would not have to deal with defensive fortifications, as the Surovikin Line stops there 1/2
Igor Girkin is very pessimistic today. He says it is time to start thinking about preventing Russia from falling apart because military defeat is near.
Summer is coming. The modern, western weapons have arrived in Ukraine, and the Ukrainians are about to unleash hell on the battlefield, creating a total disaster for Vladimir Putin.
But what does losing mean for the man who never loses?
So i couldn't really sleep, because an argument i heard yesterday against encryption kept me thinking.
"We must stop encryption because russia is using it to do bad things against the ukraine."
Ok, let me explain something real quick. The proposed laws against encryption are focused around giving the police the fabled keys to the kingdom, to allow them permanent access to everyone's communication at all times.
In our perfect little world of perfectly educated police personnel, these elite hackers would use ai and other software to endlessly scan the incoming stream of information for The Bad Things(tm).
Inside this scenario, we would help Ukraine while punishing Russia. Perfection.
The people who are opposed to US aid to #Ukraine are fools who don't know what they're talking about, and don't understand the totality of the situation. Their ignorance on the matter is putting the US in danger, and making a future armed conflict with #Russia more likely. Aid to Ukraine isn't just helping Ukraine. It's helping to ensure the safety and security of #America, and the rest of our #NATO partners.
Ukraine has made advances behind the Russian defensive network west of Verbove.
For the first time since Ukraine initially breached the line with infantry, two weeks ago Ukrainian vehicles are now in use behind the anti-vehicle ditches and dragons teeth defences.
Trump's handlers have him focused on Russia's objectives.
“He will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war,” Orbán told Hungarian state media Sunday. “Therefore, the war will end, because it is obvious that Ukraine can not stand on its own feet.”
(In this appeal to Congress, over 35 artists, activists, and scholars call for US funding to defend #Ukraine.)
Together we call upon #Congress to do the right thing.
Ukrainians are fighting for their existence. On territory that Russia occupies, it tortures Ukrainian citizens, kidnaps Ukrainian children and murders Ukrainian leaders. On territory Russia can reach with its weapons, it strikes civilians and rescue workers.
