HEATED Discourse: Media objectivity in an environmental crisis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZkxb-HoNn8&ab_channel=Mongabay

Objectivity is a long-standing pillar of journalism, but its definition and application are loosely defined and humanly impossible to achieve, media experts say. Podcast guest Emily Atkin argues that an uncritical adherence to objectivity (over trust) has led to gaslighting readers about the real-world causes and urgency of the climate crisis.

In addition to my love of things , I'm also deeply fascinated with , especially in the form of . When I was young I was always imagining the kind of person who magically figured out that you could make black marks on stone, or cuts in wood, or whatever you liked translate to words. What a genius she must have been! (Yes, in my imagination it was always a woman.) People often claim that agriculture was the of . I disagree. It was permanence and precision in that is the foundation of civilization. Writing, in short.

This is why I collect interesting forms of writing (like the bamboo slips I've shared in the past) as well as interesting or beautiful tools of writing. Today's little photo-essay is about the latter.

This is a so-called "eternal pencil". I have several of them, but this one I got because it's just so beautiful as well as practical. Details in the alt text as usual.

(Mastodon users will have to click through to see all the photos.)

Opening the box and removing the sponge protective layer reveals a decorative fake-vellum sheet over the actual contents. The fake vellum is inscribed with this Chinese idiom: 腹有诗书气自华 (fù yǒu shī shū qì zì huá, meaning literally roughly "having a belly full of poetry and books makes one's breath shine" and more idiomatically "being a student of letters and poems makes one's mark") Through the translucent vellum can be made out the shape of the included pencil and its two replacement heads.
The contents on display, flipped the other way to have the pencil pointing down, show the nice elegant design of the parts. The pencil is made of purple sandalwood and has a little brass plate embedded on the top that reads "eternal pencil" again.
The little brass plate on the purple sandalwood pencil is shown in closer detail, revealing both what the plate says more clearly and the very nice wood of the pencil body.
Pencil and replacement heads removed from the box.

i have a hard time believing that using terms like “artificial intelligence” are causing people to believe that it’s “thinking”.

you don’t have to explain to people why artificial grass doesn’t grow. the “artificial” part says that on its own

“lab grown” diamonds are a thing now, they avoided “artificial” diamonds because they’re chemically identical to the real thing

besides, there’s far simpler explanations — e.g. the “AI is going to take over the world” messaging

I beg your pardon; I saw only your second toot and pressed reply without looking for a first.

I think we are both right, but I had not twigged that you thought it improbable that folks might anthropomorphise the machines. In my limited experience humans have a low threshold for thinking in terms of analogy, and I suspect this leads to a low threshold for anthropomorphisation.

You're quite right about the dictionary definition of learning. I'm slightly hesitant to agree beyond that but because of my own ignorance rather than anything else: I am disinclined to call a "hard disk drive" "machine-knowledge" because it seems to me to be too close to thinking by analogy, when such is not necessary.

I know, it's a slippery slope to arguing with a reporter about learning by analogy like that famous video of Richard Feynman, or correcting one's grandchildren for being lazy using "car" as a contraction of "motor-car" (thanks Gran :P ), or readjusting one's students for saying "plane" when they mean "airplane".

As much as I wish "meta-algorithm" might be a preferred term, I realise it never will be. Forgive me; I think I replied on an optimistic day xD English teachers, indeed any linguists, everywhere will agree that language is a fickle mistress; perhaps only slightly less fickle than thought herself.

I hope it is some small consolation that I think right and wrong are constructs of the animal mind, that I accept p>0.05 as probably being real, and that we're probably both right.

stupid idea: bluetooth without internet connections. clients reside on the phone or computer of participants, and peer automatically with one another when close by (or maybe with a public access point), exchanging messages and propagating messages further with every contact. private and public messages can be read via a simple app

which actually sounds like something someone somewhere might already have created.

So I had a bit of an "I'm alone" mental meltdown at New Years, sent an unfortunate email to my 3 daughters.

That resulted in much increased communication between all of us... which has definitely improved my mental well-being.

Though I still regret succumbing to my depression, it's not necessarily a bad thing to let your loved ones know you're disintegrating internally (and silently).
