If, as Ursula Le Guin argues in Telling Is Listening, human #communication is #intersubjective and mutual, and involves a continuous interchange between two (or more) consciousnesses - like what happens when amoebas have sex ... what exactly is going on when we communicate with #AI / #SALAMI chatbots that simulate a conscious partner in communication but neither understand their own utterances nor accept and learn from interchange with a user?
Toxic #Filipino parenting culture: not giving your kids the chance to explain themselves whenever they make mistakes or don't agree with you. Instead, you just yell at them and worse, call them names.
If the intention is to make them fear you so that they don't make the same mistake again, maybe it will work. But in the long run, it can lead to #trauma that can haunt them even in adulthood.
It can develop into a fear of expressing & asserting themselves. They won't be able to communicate well, and #communication is a very important skill that affects many (if not all) aspects of our lives.
If suppressed, it can build up & explode later on. Imagine all those years of just keeping things to themslvs.
Learning: I'm not yet a parent so maybe this is easier said than done. But when I have kids, I'll give them a safe space where they can explain themslvs (but in a respectful way). 2/2
I think parents who yell at their children just don't know how to communicate or if they do, they can't control their emotions so they resort to yelling.
Thus, no matter how good of a communicator you are, if you have low EQ, you'll still end up not communicating well.
So maybe mastering one's emotions is the master skill that we need to learn. How does one become a #MasterOfEmotions? 🤔

I'm always interested in words for colors, and I found this article particularly fascinating: Apparently, warm colors are easier to communicate than cool colors (based on how quickly someone can pick the correct color chip when given clues).
“Mass #propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in #cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.”

💁🏻♀️ It's my turn to make my #introduction: I’m Mélina Cordeau, PhD student in #neuroscience at Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone in #Marseille. 🙉 My PhD project is centered on the #voice#perception in #human and #macaque. I use #MRI : anatomical, functional and diffusion data, to understand the structure-function relationship involved in voice processing in primates brain.
🧠 I am interested in the #anatomy of the #brain, and more generally in its #evolution in different #species.
🥂 I also have a strong taste for #communication and science #vulgarization. I enjoy #social events and I like to organize #events for scientists. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻!
Hi all,
I'm a scientist in Queensland, Australia. I spent 20-years in virus research/diagnostic development following MedLabSci degree. PhD in virology next. Research grants in discovery, detection & characterisation of respiratory viruses. Published (see ORCID in bio). Started blogging/tweeting hobby. Then spent 5 years in public health virology diagnostics. Fun work. 2021 to now, ran testing lab (ends soon). What's next for Ian🤷? #Introduction#virus#cats#gardening#numbers#communication
Just a quickie note to say hello; nice to be 'here' in Mastodonia, for easy, reliable (and/or backup) communication, plus to pick up the crumbs from those I know from Twitter (who may be leaving).
