While #Biden has so far avoided naming #Trump during his time abroad, he has increasingly warned of the dangers posed by the kind of #authoritarian & #isolationist impulses the fmr president has embraced in his push to return to the #WhiteHouse. #POTUS, who has said in the past that America’s very #democracy is at stake in the coming #election, …[has juxtaposed] #DDay’s 80th anniversary to sound the alarm about the advance of #antidemocratic forces across the globe.
Today is the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Around 200 veterans attended an event in Normandy to mark the date — the youngest in their 90s and some over 100. NBC spoke to some of the attendees about their experiences on June 6 1944. “I was so eager to do exactly what I considered my duties,” said 99-year-old Gideon Kantor, who fled Austria for America as Adolf Hitler rose to power, and felt compelled to return to Europe to oust the fascists who had killed his family and expelled him from his home.
"80 years ago, 21,000 men landed on Juno Beach.
14,000 Canadians 🇨🇦 and 7,000 Brits 🇬🇧 took part in the Allied Landing in Normandy, which would lead them on the paths of Victory in Europe.
🌺 History will remember June 6, 1944 as D-Day."
A curator from the Smithsonian National Museum of American #History shares 5 artifacts that help us remember the heroism of #DDay (80 years ago today) ⬇️
In the dawn they will pay
With their lives as the price
History’s written today
In this burning inferno
Know that nothing remains
As our forces advance on the beach
Aiming for heaven though serving in hell
Victory is ours their forces will fall
Through the gates of hell
As we make our way to heaven
Through the Nazi lines
Primo victoria
Today is the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing at #Normandy, #France, where ~160k #Allied troops pulled off the largest invasion by sea in history. From that point on #America was in charge of #AlliedForces & it was the beginning of the end of #WWII
When you travel to that battlefield & visit other #WWII memorials & cemeteries in #Europe you will see what great care is taken to ensure the memories of those #sacrifices are honored w/daily maintenance & #respect. This is likely the last big #DDay celebration featuring WWII #veterans who are almost all centenarians…. Some are traveling to the ceremonies & will be honored by all the dignitaries like #POTUS Joe #Biden, British PM Rishi #Sunak, Canadian PM #Trudeau & #KingCharlesII of Britain.
#Russia President Vladimir #Putin was not invited due to the invasion of #Ukraine which is somewhat ironic since back in 1944 the Soviet Union was one of the #allied countries fighting Germany. Of course, it wasn't long after the war that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( #NATO ) was formed to provide a formal, ongoing #alliance to assure the collective #security of its members in the wake of Soviet machinations in Eastern Europe & Berlin.
As we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of #DDay, I would hope that some people on the right who know better would set their ambition aside for a moment & contemplate one of the reasons that horrific slaughter happened….
The bond between the #UnitedStates, #Canada & #Europe has been as strong as ever since that cataclysmic event 8 decades ago, at least until recently. Today Europe is bewildered by what is happening to its American #allies. & you can't blame them. Most Americans wonder the same….
Donald #Trump had no idea about the #historical significance of the term "#AmericaFirst" when he first started saying it, believing erroneously that he'd thought up the slogan himself even though he'd no doubt heard it somewhere during his 77 yrs. Before the US entered the war the #AmericaFirstCommittee was the name of the #RightWing#isolationist movement & many of its members also happened to be just a little bit taken w/that #strongman fella from Germany.
#DonaldTrump knew EXACTLY what the historical significance of the term "#AmericaFirst" was the moment he started saying it, knowing FULL WELL the #AmericaFirstCommittee was the name of the #RightWing#isolationist movement. He is one of those that happen to be more than just a little bit taken w/ that #strongman fella from Germany.
How did those men, many barely more than boys find the courage to do what they did. I can't even imagine. Yet, I wouldn't be here if not for them -- both of my grandmothers were concentration camp survivors.
