Came up with it all on the spot. Was fun. The magic school is either a splinter off an orange marble dropped by a Goblin Wizard or founded by a crazy cat lady who just wanted peace and quiet and ripped a continent out of the planet to get it, eventually taking on students later.

Been a heavy user of all the Twitter alternatives for a minute now and I gotta say Mastodon is my favorite. There are definitely some features I’d like to see here (like quote posts and a DM inbox), but the community on Mastodon seems to have the best vibe and there are so many smart techies that it’s been the most helpful for finding sources.
@taylorlorenz don't be shy on testing waters on other #ActivityPub based platforms as well. You get the same audience and the same people, while enjoying these platforms' particular features. Friendica, for example, has a #DM inbox already, as well as #QuotePosts.
You can also add titles to your posts, as well as format your text using #markdown or #BBCode, and many other features that haven't made their way into Mastodon just yet (or were already for years when Mastodon added them). Not to mention you can write texts as long as your heart desires, as there's no limit on them (and they appear just as long on Mastodon).
A good and fairly popular Friendica server is venera.social
Edit: and yes, I am on Friendica. Writing to you from Friendica as well. The server I'm on, libranet.de, uses a less stable version of it. venera.social has the same admin but uses the current stable release.
Advice to my friend who is a new DM. Maybe there is someone on mastodon who could hear it too. Play fearlessly. Run every style of play, use every half baked plot hook, change tone and style as often as you can. Abandon what isn't working without ceremony. Now is the time to figure out what you like. You have the rest of your life to get good at it.
I tend to give people who #DM for me blanket permission that if you have to explain my absence from a game or reintroduce me, you can do so in the funniest possible way.
It was a couple years ago so the exact details escape me but I know my assassin rogue somehow ended up on an airship in a barrel after I had to miss a few games and nobody including her was quite sure how she got there because the last time they saw her she got beguiled by strange lights in a swamp.

My advice to anybody who wants to #DM is just embrace the chaos. Because some of the funniest bits have been the result of me having to come up with something on the spot.

I have an idea for a get-rich-quick scheme: using the Bessemer process to create massive amounts of high-quality steel. However, I'm sure my #DM has not given a single thought to this (because I know her) so I'm worried that this might give God fun #worldbuilding ideas to fuck with our party. How do I tell my group my plan, without having the industrialized slave company I know is on the other side of the map spontaneously develop a similar process?
It's official. I can now call myself a #dungeonsanddragons#DM. I had my first of two/three Session 0s today and all went well. This was the one I was most worried about as a new DM because both of these players are NEW* players.
*One is a #criticalrole fan who's BF has been playing forever. (he got me to play) The other has played a very little amount several years ago and needed to re-learn.
Either way, it went well. They had fun and got their backstories straightened out. They should be ready to play when we start in a couple weeks. I still need to do a short Session 0 for BF (player 3) and get some details of player 4's PC before a possible session 0 there.
@bedirthan honestly the more I #DM, the less info I need to keep the campaign going. Took me a while to realize that my players really don't need to know the political web of my setting, it's just there so I know how the world will react to my party.
If I ever #DM you there is a high probability that I pressed the wrong button in one of the various mobile UI’s that don’t quite align, and if I do, I apologize profusely for being dumb.

I just did the #DM cackle. Inspired by something that happened to me while playing Baldur's Gate 3 I decided that the next time the party fights they're going to do so in a cellar that has a bunch of barrels in it and see if they can figure out that they are full of dwarven liquor. Several of them have fire spells, so it's a test to see if they can figure out they should probably not do that in there unless they wanna get blown up.
