Now that I've had it a couple weeks, I'm an even bigger fan of my new modular, repairable laptop from #Framework: lightweight, keyboard is a dream, comparable/better to MS Surfaces I've had (keyboard went bad).
BONUS: with the intro of this new series, they've put the older model on sale!
It's a million small choices like this that will help us reduce waste (particularly ewaste) & live more sustainably on the planet.
I don't throw away #compactfluorescent lamps but "burn" them in my #turtle dwellings. They give off sufficient light and provide some heat as well. Currently one CFL has been consumed, have a box full of them. #ewaste#environment
Do you know when you have hung on to a mobile phone for too long? When you get a quote to sell it and the phone is worth $2 USD. Sleep well Pixel2. I'll find something for you to do in the #homelab.
We want a future of repairable gadgets and less ewaste.
5-7 years of software support doesn't mean anything if we can't keep the hardware running well for 7 years.
Glad to see iFixit didn't go quiet on this one.
I've been trying to highlight Samsung's scummy business practices for a couple years now, but when they can't even make a support contract work with iFixit, it's a REAL bad look.
Malaysians buy 1 million #smartphones per MONTH. This is absolutely insane. There should be no reason to "upgrade" any phone that is less than 5 years old. It's just marketing and forced #obsolescence #ewaste#throwawayculture
I purchased a domain today in the hopes of starting something I've wanted to do for a long time. I hate waste, especially #ewaste and I noticed a few of my local community members in dire need of computers but can't afford to get them. I decided that I'm going to try to get folks to donate their old hardware (desktops and laptops mostly) that are 5-7 years old (so 64bit works smoothly) and install #Linux on them and donate those recycled machines to the folks in need. More info coming soon!
I just received my new work laptop (#Apple#Macbook Pro M3, ~€2000) just to discover that it does not support dual-monitor output despite having multiple video ports.
For a feature that even the cheapest laptops (and older MacBooks) have had for years, Apple now asks you to buy the MacBook Pro M3 Pro (€2500) or M3 Max (€4000).
This is essentially €2000 #ewaste. Not so "pro" after all.
📡 hi lurkers & beyond!
for an on-going project with #lowtechmagazine I'm looking for places to buy/get e-waste around #brussels#belgium
Do you know structures / services / scrapyard that collect electronic / electric waste in the region. Back in NL, I used to go to a scrapyard selling by the kg...
Specifically looking for DC motors, cables, computer fans
Found a really large disposable #vape in the grass. It seems to allow one of 4 flavours to be selected. But it is still a single-use device. There is no USB-C port for recharging the battery. #ewaste#ecigarrette
I wish smartphones were designed with batteries that pop out. So when the battery gets old you just pop in a new one, like replacing a battery in a flashlight or something similar. It would be less expensive for the consumer and also more environmentally friendly. Both of those things are probably why it will never happen but I can still dream. 😂
No I don't want a phone with "great battery life" I want a phone with a REMOVABLE BATTERY. How hard is it to find one here in the US?? 😩 :blobcatangry:
Happy to announce that I am now a Trusted Contributor in the @postmarketOS project! It has been around 3.5 years since I found out about it and started contributing (mostly with ports and mainline linux support for various Samsung devices). It really feels great to be part of a joint effort to give devices a second life, and decrease the amount of #eWaste in the world!
"We must think more deliberately about which technologies are necessary to build a better world and where it actually makes sense to roll out digital tech or AI tools. Those democratic deliberations can’t just be based on the marketing claims of tech companies, but need to account for the real impacts and material footprints of those technologies."
I imagine a future where children play on mountains of waste, metal, and circuitry, while toxic fumes waft through flesh and bone, rationalised by innovation and cheap labour. But then I read articles like this and realise we're already there.
