thinks we're not goofing around enough here on

"...the thing that makes exciting is it doesn’t have the same self-serious vibe that most other Twitter alternatives (and plenty of other social media) have. People aren’t talking about stocks and news and Elon Musk over there, they’re making goofs and being weird like the Twitter of old."

Please prove them wrong.

Boost extensively.

Standing out for me, from a very good article by @kissane

"Great product design is also grounded in user research and a commitment to ongoing evaluation and iteration. For something like a decentralized social network, it also requires letting people from many distinct communities help steer the ship—and building ways to work toward consensus in some areas and accept both conflict and compromise in others.

And great design at mass scale requires the core team to value mass adoption and push back—hard and loudly—against the idea that inconvenience is good because it filters out undesirables"

The whole reason for each of us boosting content here in the is that each of us is our own algorithm. We are doing for what the algorithms do for all other social media: designing what everyone will see. The Federated flow is pure, literally unadulterated content, unadulterated by any algorithms other than the people posting.

Facebook and Instagram were tedious before-a trudge through more ads than anything else. was a gladiatorial hellhole. They all pale that much more in comparison now. They are how social media USED to be.

The Fediverse is how social media must be.

For starters, let's refuse to ever let any private interest of any kind either own or control it. This information crossroads must remain a public utility, run by the people for the people.

May the Fediverse live long and prosper.

A lot of commentators on stuff, including the & its various apps like , seem to mix up the motivations of developers & communities with those of corporations, who constantly want to grow to maximise shareholder returns. That's not how it usually works with FOSS.

It's similar to those folks who migrate to FOSS from proprietary SaaS & then treat their FOSS services & devs with righteous indignation as if they've been paying them... when they aren't.

I like and all, but what will decide if I spend more time here is how American-centric it will be.

One thing I love about is how for the first time since the dawn of social media/networks with have a tool that is not American, where Americans are not the majority of users (at least they were not until recently), and where most conversations do not revolve around American issues.

And... I just don't want to go back to that American-centric internet ever again.

Here? So far, I'm not too sure. Of course, it depends on who I follow, but the public timelines are a bit too on the wrong side of that issue... 🤔

Hello ! I have a major dilemma and there are no clear solutions. I've made a lot of moves to begin a 2024 run against Marjorie Taylor Greene in and for a variety of reasons that aren't important right now, I strongly believe that I would be quite successful. As we're all aware, the legislation and fearmongering that people like Marjorie keep pushing are putting our children into actual physical danger.

I have zero problems putting myself on the national stage and into the crosshairs of the extremists - in fact, I welcome it. However... I wouldn't be stepping into that spotlight alone; these people are absolutely evil and would immediately politicize my 6 year old (in addition to just being the child of a political opponent, they have a particular trait that would be leaked and latched onto), which would hurt them in a much more direct way by placing a target on them that would remain long after any campaign or congressional term. That puts me into a position where trying to protect my child from harm exposes them to even more of it.

I can't and won't do something that I know would harm my child, but I also can't stand by and watch it happen to other people's children. So what do I do? I truly don't know. I'd love to get feedback -- particularly from other parents and those who have this type of experience, but also just from anybody who has any to give.

(See my reply to this for what I planned to be my introduction post.)

I feel like targeting or users to go on is only a part of the fight. To grow we must not think only in terms of mastodon but in terms of . Spread and on on . is just a tiny part of social media and targetting it hinders the growth potential.

I've been keeping track of the conversations and it's very regretful. It sounds to me like many in the Black community are caught between the rock that is shitty/nonexistent moderation that is unable to manage a hateful segment of the and the hard place that is a centralized social network that can afford to spend the resources in effective moderation.

I wonder how (or if) this will change as more and more people from the Global South join. Can that hateful segment continue to exert its influence in Spanish or in French or in non-Latin languages?

I'm skeptical of because it's built on the same tech VC mindset that has been so harmful in prior generations of social media.

I'm skeptical of the and because Black and brown people get shouted over by tech leftists when they have the audacity to name their experiences here.

That crap shows up in my timeline every single time I log on.

Before you say, "my feed isn't like that," let me ask, "How many Black and brown people do you follow?"

quote tweets. if we had better search on Mastodon, I'm sure I could pull up a conversation about this. but that's another thing some people desperately want, others won't accept. and like QTs, other server software that's part of the has it.

Among several small steps on "getting my shit together" I'm trying to double down on reading more again. Normally I gamify that with GoodReads, owned by Amazon. This time though I decided to make the leap to the fediverse's version named BookWyrm. I am going with the main instance for now, where you can find my profile and my reading history here

will no longer auto-share blog posts to !

This is because Automattic, the company the owns Jetpack, was not able to come to a "good faith" agreement with Twitter about access to their API.

However, there's also good news.

In the same blog post, Automattic announced that auto-sharing of blog posts is coming to !

I'm thinking of starting a room on clubhouse to talk about dreams. It's been a while since I've held a dream discussion. Some positive press about Mastodon by way of John Naughton of the Guardian.

Unfortunately, it's full of inaccurate information. Namely:

    1. Mastodon is not a protocol. However, it uses many protocols, the most well-known and pertinent is ActivityPub.
    2. Mastodon is not the Fediverse, but it is one component of the Fediverse.
    3. The Fediverse is not a network of Twitter-like services. In fact, there are several services with no similarity to Twitter. Example: Peertube

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/21/back-to-the-future-how-mastodon-is-restoring-the-lost-art-of-online-conversation

    jlapoutre,

@atomicpoet actually I woud even say the is equal to the web itself as a fundamental infrastructure layer (Re: “The Fediverse could be as revolutionary as the Web itself.”)
