The whole reason for each of us boosting content here in the #fediverse is that each of us is our own algorithm. We are doing for #mastodon what the algorithms do for all other social media: designing what everyone will see. The Federated flow is pure, literally unadulterated content, unadulterated by any algorithms other than the people posting.
Facebook and Instagram were tedious before-a trudge through more ads than anything else. #Twitter was a gladiatorial hellhole. They all pale that much more in comparison now. They are how social media USED to be.
The Fediverse is how social media must be.
For starters, let's refuse to ever let any private interest of any kind either own or control it. This information crossroads must remain a public utility, run by the people for the people.
Heya, frens! I'm Jae. A non-binary nerd from the midwest! Heavily into #VideoGames and nerdy things. I also adore animals, just, all of them, hehe!
Here in the #fediverse to meet all kinds of new people from all different walks of life to understand as many perspectives as possible and grow as a person. In other words, be social and make frens!

A lot of commentators on #FOSS stuff, including the #Fediverse & its various apps like #Mastodon, seem to mix up the motivations of #FOSS developers & communities with those of corporations, who constantly want to grow to maximise shareholder returns. That's not how it usually works with FOSS.
It's similar to those folks who migrate to FOSS from proprietary SaaS & then treat their FOSS services & devs with righteous indignation as if they've been paying them... when they aren't.
I like #Calckey and all, but what will decide if I spend more time here is how American-centric it will be.
One thing I love about #Mastodon is how for the first time since the dawn of social media/networks with have a tool that is not American, where Americans are not the majority of users (at least they were not until recently), and where most conversations do not revolve around American issues.
And... I just don't want to go back to that American-centric internet ever again.
Here? So far, I'm not too sure. Of course, it depends on who I follow, but the public timelines are a bit too on the wrong side of that issue... 🤔
Hello #Fediverse! I have a major dilemma and there are no clear solutions. I've made a lot of moves to begin a 2024 run against Marjorie Taylor Greene in #GA14 and for a variety of reasons that aren't important right now, I strongly believe that I would be quite successful. As we're all aware, the legislation and fearmongering that people like Marjorie keep pushing are putting our children into actual physical danger.
I have zero problems putting myself on the national stage and into the crosshairs of the extremists - in fact, I welcome it. However... I wouldn't be stepping into that spotlight alone; these people are absolutely evil and would immediately politicize my 6 year old (in addition to just being the child of a political opponent, they have a particular trait that would be leaked and latched onto), which would hurt them in a much more direct way by placing a target on them that would remain long after any campaign or congressional term. That puts me into a position where trying to protect my child from harm exposes them to even more of it.
I can't and won't do something that I know would harm my child, but I also can't stand by and watch it happen to other people's children. So what do I do? I truly don't know. I'd love to get feedback -- particularly from other parents and those who have this type of experience, but also just from anybody who has any to give.
(See my reply to this for what I planned to be my introduction post.)
I think people who like #Mastodon and the #fediverse shouldn't worry about Bluesky. Build a community here. If other people build a community other places, that's fine too.
I've been keeping track of the conversations and it's very regretful. It sounds to me like many in the Black community are caught between the rock that is shitty/nonexistent moderation that is unable to manage a hateful segment of the #fediverse and the hard place that is a centralized social network that can afford to spend the resources in effective moderation.
I wonder how (or if) this will change as more and more people from the Global South join. Can that hateful segment continue to exert its influence in Spanish or in French or in non-Latin languages?
I'm skeptical of #Bluesky because it's built on the same tech VC mindset that has been so harmful in prior generations of social media.
I'm skeptical of the #fediverse and #Mastodon because Black and brown people get shouted over by tech leftists when they have the audacity to name their experiences here.
That crap shows up in my timeline every single time I log on.
Before you say, "my feed isn't like that," let me ask, "How many Black and brown people do you follow?"
Among several small steps on "getting my shit together" I'm trying to double down on reading more again. Normally I gamify that with GoodReads, owned by Amazon. This time though I decided to make the leap to the fediverse's version named BookWyrm. I am going with the main instance for now, where you can find my profile and my reading history here #fediverse#Bookwyrm#reading#GoodReads
I'm thinking of starting a room on clubhouse to talk about dreams. It's been a while since I've held a dream discussion. I've been doing a lot of dream interpretations lately, and I think it would just be another great opportunity to talk a little bit more about our beautiful, and sometimes crazy dreams. Let me know if interested. :)
She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.
Ideas?
Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.
Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the #Fediverse community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Dont really care if #twitter refugees are fleeing to another proprietary silo. EIther they will eventually learn the right lessons and be on an activitypub compatible platform again in the future, or were never likely to stick around the fediverse to begin with. Im not sure wringing our hands about it changes much. #bluesky
@evan I know you said the activitypub spec was frozen but it seems like there are some flaws that might need to be addressed. Can you point me to some writings on how the spec or the tech can be improved to do a better job at preventing this https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/110272951321280411
This shouldn't be a burden put on the individual. I know there are bad people everywhere, but we can surely do better
#DFG, a graduate school of #FreiburgUniversity, is a new follower of mine, so in the vetting process, I took a look at their website.
I find the holistic approach they take towards the study of #empires quite fascinating:
"The Research Training Group (graduate school) investigates the temporal structures of #empires, reflections upon them, and the deliberate manipulation of the past in..."
I guess apart from commitment, speed also greatly is determined by resources, financial and research (assistance).
In any case, there seem to be quite a few organization in the #Fediverse offering #PhD positions.
If I may make a suggestion:
Even though your text makes the fields of study relatively clear, it might help if you were to have a table of required degrees that would be admissible for your...

It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.
