This car park serves a small kiddies play area and always floods after any significant rain. It’s been tipping down all day so the sunset was reflected nicely in the water.

Gold Reinvented: Stanford Scientists Uncover Exotic Chemical State in New Material
A form of gold that does not occur stably in nature is at the heart of a new crystalline material with intriguing properties.
Stanford scientists have synthesized a rare form of gold, Au2+, stabilized by halide perovskite, with potential applications in electronics and energy sectors, linking their findings to Nobel laureate Linus Pauling’s earlier research.

So I went to a couple of car meets today and did an A/B/C on an and . All images appear in this sequence:

  1. app on 14 Pro, RAW with as many post-processing options turned off as possible
2 iPhone 14 Pro camera app,
  2. 7, RAW

The photos are mostly images of cars, not people.

All images are shot with the default 1x lens.

All images are imported as .dng into Lightroom and left as-is except for Halide shots which are all inexplicably overexposed by around 1.5 stops. For those shots, I manually lowered exposure, but left all other sliders where they were.

Halide produces 12 MP images even when I choose 48 MP. iPhone camera produces 48 MP images. Pixel 7 produces 12 MP images. It’s pretty obvious that the “48 MP” and “50 MP” images are synthesized out of binned-pixel 12 MP sensors. The images uploaded here are downscaled to 1080p jpgs using the same Lightroom settings (sRGB, 95% quality).

OK, on with the show!

@drahardja Is the Nikon the most accurate of all? Saw the orange car, compared to it seems less saturated, but I think the Nikon is the gold standard.

I was sad to have missed the battle, because I love both of those minerals, but I love ultramafic rocks more, so I'm pleased by the outcome.

And this why responsible adults don’t let their friends use the native Apple Camera app 🤷‍♂️

A cloudscape captured using that app is smudged to hell because it uses super-aggressive noise reduction 😱

The same scene taken with LightRoom mobile as a RAW & processed using its default (low) noise reduction setting 🙂

Noisier, yes, but much more real detail, & you can choose to smooth & smudge more if you prefer (🤢)

FWIW, both saved as JPEGs & the zoomed details screenshotted.

📷

A zoom in of a section of the previous picture showing the cloud details smudged out.
A blue sky with scattered high citrus and mares’ tails. This was taken with the Adobe Lightroom mobile app in RAW/DNG mode & has been lightly processed for dynamic range to try & match the Apple Camera picture (albeit the colour balance is a bit different). It was then saved as a JPEG. Zoom in and you’ll see that all the fine detail has been maintained using a much less aggressive noise reduction setting.
A zoom of the previous picture showing that the fine cloud detail has been maintained at the (to me completely acceptable) expense of more pixel noise.

Alameda sunset. Went to pickup my son from a friend’s house, and on the drive back the sunset was amazing. Had to pull over, get out of the car and take some sunset photos.

My son picked this one as the best. (I might post the other candidates as replies to this message and see what folks on Mastodon think).
