When the media mentions #heatwaves, people often do not think of the term being associated with the #ocean. However, ocean heatwaves are getting more frequent, and we should pay note attention to it. Recent heatwaves have been observed in #aotearoa#uk#unitedstates#canada
Today the humidity is at 75% , way above normal levels for heath and comfort. Cannot turn the AC on at work because of load shedding and half of my team did not come into work because the heavy rains last night, led to serious power outages in their neighbourhoods. We are literally unable to to do our jobs because of #climatechange
but this loss in productivity is hardly ever taken into account when we talk about the impacts of climate change on our livelihoods. #pakistan#lahore#heatwaves
@NatureMC so glad you raised this here - i’ve been thinking about the wider social and cultural impact of #ClimateChange too. Certain key social events might eventually become untenable (see this post I just did), but long before that individuals may be #excluded due to heat - and in general, as you say, #Heatwaves make normal social life difficult and really increase #Loneliness especially for elderly and vulnerable 1/2 #ClimateDiary#Anthropology#Sociology
"The prognosis for the survival of a large proportion of extant species is not good. Our review lays out arguments clearly demonstrating that there is a biodiversity crisis, quite probably the start of the Sixth Mass Extinction. Dedicated conservation biologists and conservation agencies are doing what they can, focused mainly on threatened birds and mammals, among which some species may be saved from the extinction that would otherwise ensue. But we are pessimistic about the fate of most of the Earth's biodiversity, much of which is going to vanish without us ever knowing of its existence."
A study about the Sixth Mass Extinction from 2022 but still as accurate, alerting and pressing as ever. Which is why I wanted to boost it here.
I feel like it's one of the parts about climate change and human folly that is often disregarded for no apparent reason.
#ClimateCrisis will lead to many deaths and conflicts, especially (and mostly unjustified) in the global south, the ones suffering from the global north's colonialist bullshittery.
But, many don't seem to have in mind that if, for example, bees are gone, flowers won't get pollinated. Ask the Chinese people about it.
Earth's biosphere is intertwined in a very complex manner and us humans are just a small part of it, even if we may believe otherwise.
At the rate, species are currently vanishing, I find it highly alerting that it's being ignored by most media, except for those deeply involved with #climatechange and #nature
In 2022 alone, 5 oil companies — ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP & TotalEnergies — more than DOUBLED PROFITS to an all-time historic record of $200 billion
"One-quarter of [Britons] polled said they are already personally impacted by #ClimateChange and a further third say they expect their daily lives to be impacted within the next decade.
Only 4% of #UK adults think that the UK Government has a good #climate adaptation plan, and almost half think the nation is completely unprepared for more frequent and intense #heatwaves."
Cities keep being surprised by #climate-aggravated emergencies. #NewYork was not ready for the #smoke emergency.
"#Wildfire smoke experts said that it would have been difficult to foresee such dramatic impacts but that #ClimateChange is also reshaping natural hazards at a startling pace."
"#Seattle did not have a specific plan for #heatwaves in June 2021, when temperatures soared to 108."
There is little doubt among experts: Europe will endure a difficult summer in 2023.
The European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič says it is vital that the EU has more firefighting aircraft capacity in order to respond to another hot summer.
It will therefore double the capacity of its firefighting fleet, with 28 aircraft in total, for an "intense" summer after the major devastation in 2022.
