Sols 4157-4158: What is That??

Curiosity finds odd rocks with "dragon scales" texture.
"We have seen a lot of layered rocks over the last 12 years on Mars, but these ones really stand out by the dizzying pattern they trace on the rock surfaces."

NASA is seeking future innovative methods that could help retrieve rock samples collected by the Perseverance rover on Mars. Gig work apps, like Uber and Grubhub, offered to pick up the rocks, but NASA’s no wage-theft policy killed that plan.

@davidaugust what if Tesla does it? Havent they a showroom on already?

Engineers at JPL today monitored a final transmission from the disabled Mars helicopter Ingenuity.

Mars rover Perseverance is ready to move on west for exploration of the Jezero crater rim.

Ingenuity will no longer be able to communicate with earth, but newly loaded software will allow it to make and store measurements every day, to be retrieved by a future robotic or human mission. Ingenuity’s memory could potentially hold about 20 years’ worth of daily data.

Few more pics from the Ingenuity control room at JPL, posted by Laurie Leshin, Director of JPL, including a pic of the team enjoying some “Final Comms” chocolate cake.

Kudos to the team, NASA and JPL where they "Dare Mighty Things Together."

What next for flights on other planets and moons?

NASA's $11 billion plan to robotically bring rock samples from Mars back to Earth is too expensive and will take too long, the agency's administrator said Monday, so officials are tasking government and private sector engineers to come up with a better plan, Ars Technica reports:

Absolutely fascinating Stereo3D view of this Martian landscape.

Many thanks to @PaulHammond51 for finding the right-eye view from the rover's R-Nav Cam.

To get the Stereo3D effect, just let your eyes' line of sight be parallel (not cross-eyed) with left eye in front of left image and right eye in front of right image.

Planets directly influence one another, and the more massive they are, the larger their gravitational pull. Mars is a lot smaller than Earth, but new research says it has enough clout to create swirling vortices in our planet's oceans. Atlas Obscura explains: https://flip.it/R.5Vmk

Since the Ingenuity Marscopter worked so well, NASA's come up with a new concept for a flying machine on Mars: it's a solar-powered VTOL fixed-wing aircraft called MAGGIE.

I reprocessed the Sol 1110 Ingenuity image with AI-upscaling to improve visual fidelity.

As @65dBnoise already noted, there seems to be disturbed sand on the other side of the sand ripple. We are still hoping for SuperCam images of the area to get a better understanding of what happened.

: Though is the Red Planet, false-color images can help us learn about its weather and geology. This image shows various wind-related features on the Red Planet near the center of Gamboa Crater. Larger sand dunes form sinuous crests and individual domes. There are tiny ripples on the tops of the dunes, only several feet from crest to crest. These merge into larger mega-ripples about 30 feet apart that radiate outward from the dunes. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona
