📚 Meet our guest writer - Underdogs author Chris Bonnello on the importance of neurodivergent representation

I'm super proud of my fellow BFS committee members E.M. Faulds & David Green for being so open & vulnerable about what it's like to be a neurodiverse writer. I already posted Beth's piece, but as we continue the BFS's celebration of Neurodiversity Week , here BFS Secretary David Green is searingly honest about what it’s like to be autistic and a writer—especially one who writes about neurodiverse characters.

Has anyone else noticed how history seems to remember the names of so many folks whose behaviors we would now describe as ““ or “”?

How many savants?

How many geniuses?

How many intellectual heroes of the modern world remain virtually unknown?

Could it be because the modern genius’s works are appropriated by their employers and remain “trade secrets”?

So....I feel like I'm pretty weird when it comes to certain things I really enjoy.

Music for example. I LOVE music. All kinds. Rock, Pop, HipHop, Classic and all of the subgenres that those genres created....with the exception of Country.

I just CANNOT Country. There's just something about the "twang" sound of it that just makes me cringe, if that makes any sense.

Does anyone else have something like this where they LOVE almost everything about a particular topic or hobby, except ONE particular subset of it?

Or is it just me?

friends, how do you handle having your spelling corrected? This week I’ve had an email telling me about a misspelling on my website (admittedly that could be useful to know but it’s still not something I really want my contact form used for) and had comments at work on spelling on drafts (that were shared for convenience and I thought it was clear they weren’t the final version). I always think of myself as ‘not very dyslexic’ but then I wonder if that’s an oversimplification!

Five ADHD lies I tell myself:

  • I will deal with this tomorrow
  • Relaxing doesn’t actually exist
  • I can do just one thing in this game
  • I need more ketchup/hot sauce (there are already three bottles of ketchup/hot sauce)
  • I can totally clean my house without expecting visitors.

What are some ADHD lies you tell yourself?

Twenty-one Awesome Symptoms of Autism 🎉

Many things in life can be super-hard if you're autistic... but, maybe surprisingly to many people, there can actually be good things about it too!

A thread.

The concept was developed collectively: An overdue correction on the origins of neurodiversity theory

TL;DR: no, Judy Singer didn't invent neurodiversity; the idea was around before she was, and came from the community.

Understanding neurodivergence in our society.

Neurodivergent describes a person whose brain differs from the norm and impacts how their brain works.

This can include medical conditions, autism, ADHD, mental health conditions, and more.

This is not an exhaustive list. Credit to Lived Experience Educator

Evening, friends.

I am looking for more resources on neurodivergence in academia and the workplace. It's for our EDI group and a potential awareness seminar so anything under this (broad) umbrella is good.

Please only respond if:

a) you are actually neurodivergent OR
b) your resources were definitely made by a neurodivergent person :)

Boosts welcome!

If you haven't read my book "CAMHS in Crisis" yet, it's available now!

This book looks at the failure of CAMHS to support Autistic young people. It uses parliamentary evidence, research, and personal experiences.

Prawie zrobione zakupy internetowe: no, kilka. Jedzenie: zapomniałem.

Kocham swój mózg, nie ironicznie, dzisiaj kocham.

Przynajmniej dzisiaj wygrywam z doomscrolingiem zdecydowanie. Nawet miałem myśl o wyjściu z domu, ale NIE MAM CZASU. Na altext też, przepraszam, bo kliknięcie teraz "wyślij" to prawdopodobnie jedyna szansa żeby ten post skończyć.
