Happy birthday to Catherine Elizabeth Pierson aka Kate Pierson, American singer, lyricist and one of the singers and founding members of B-52, born on this day in 1948.
"Roam" is a song by American #newWave band #theB52s released as the fourth single from their fifth studio album, #CosmicThing (1989). The vocals are sung by #KatePierson and #CindyWilson, making it the only vocal track on the album without any vocal involvement from #FredSchneider. It is also the only track from the album in which the B-52's worked with a co-writer, Robert Waldrop, who penned the lyrics. Released as a single in 1989. https://youtu.be/MypxgoRvEa4

"Love Shack" is a song by American #newWave band #theB52s from their fifth studio album, #CosmicThing (1989). It was released on June 20, 1989, and was produced by #DonWas. The song was a comeback for the band, following their decline in popularity in the mid-1980s and the death of guitarist #RickyWilson in 1985."Love Shack" is considered the band's #signatureSong and has been a concert staple since its release. Commercially, the single topped the charts in Australia. https://youtu.be/Tzo4NHFKu9Q
🎧 #TheB52s took their name from the Georgia slang term for the bouffant beehive "wig lady" ("Phyllis") styled for Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson.
Michael Stipe spent time with the band when they were all in Woodstock and later told #MTV, they used colanders and aloe vera to set their trademark hairpieces!
"Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland" (1986)
🎬 #PaulTassie directed the film.
Watching an 1989 episode of "PostModern MTV" with Michael Stipe and Tim Sommer. They're on a small set, side-by-side on barstools, a large aquarium behind them and a Tutankhamun bust on a bookshelf above it.
The topic is The B-52s. Michael says "we were in Woodstock at the same time, swimming in creeks and talking about music." REM were recording and The B-52s were making this video for "Channel Z."

🎧 "Cosmic Thing" rode shotgun on my DC-to-SF road trip in 1990. They played all of Georgia and Alabama, in the heavy rain on the road-on-stilts above the marshes west of New Orleans, as I rolled into old Sante Fe at sundown, and in the final miles, on Dolores Street, as "Topaz" played.
#TheB52s dropped the whole album on streaming services last week.
Has anybody seen
a dog dyed dark green?
About two inches tall
with a strawberry blonde fall
Sunglasses and a bonnet
and designer jeans
with appliques on it?
📷 In January 1990, I was changing my life, moving from #DC to #SF. I took a drive-away #AlfaRomeo convertible south then west. A lazy, two-week amble on back roads.
This picture is near Las Vegas, NM the day I drove from #Amarillo to #SanteFe. I left the car running and #TheB52s' "Roam" blasting while I snapped a few.
