As a science communicator, I was interested to explore #threads.
So far, it feels like everyone is shouting everything all at once with no organization or order. There are no hashtags to help discover topics, for example. I mainly see a lot of celebs & influencers I don’t follow.
I’m not sure it can become a place to exchange meaningful ideas. But that’s probably not the point.
I’m happy at #Mastodon & there really is no comparison. It will be interesting to see how it all evolves over time.
#Meta's "#Threads" apps are privacy nightmares of a kind I can't recall ever seeing before. Vastly more privacy-invasive than the Twitter apps, and Elon Musk could usefully emphasize Twitter's far better privacy policies. Meta is nuts to go privacy-evil in today's environment.
The big contradiction of the #Fediverse is that people want e. g. #Mastodon to be more popular and accepted than e. g. #Twitter or #Threads but yet they are ANTI EVERYTHING; No companies, no this and that, no federation, "I will fucking block you all" for even looking at the mainstream popular culture.
For-profit tech companies like #Threads and #Flipboard are beginning to implement #ActivityPub, and that's been causing a lot of chaos lately. Thus, I've found it helpful to take a step back, consider what it is about the fediverse that I value, and think about whether federation with these large platforms will bring us closer...
The hardest part in trying to write about #Threads is figuring out how to compassionately describe both sides of the divide.
On one hand, I’m rooted in the #Fediverse camp and you have all seen me making fun of the cringe and status-chasing on Threads.
On the other hand, I’m a marketer and a long-time lover of many mainstream web spaces. I don’t hate a lot of popular culture. And I missed so many of the people who only now migrated from #Twitter.
"#Meta acknowledged…to The Washington Post that Threads is intentionally blocking the search terms ["covid" and "long covid"] and said that other terms are being blocked, but the company declined to provide a list of them. A search by The Post discovered that the words…“coronavirus,” “vaccines” and “vaccination” are also among blocked words." https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/09/11/threads-covid-coronavirus-searches-blocked/

I’m seeing a lot of people badmouthing Facebook/Meta and saying we shouldn’t federate with Threads.
Mastodon.social is owned by Mastodon gGmbH and run by the author of Mastodon. Mastodon.social federates with Threads. If Facebook/Meta were toxic, do you think they would? Of course, not.
Facebook/Meta has Mastodon’s author’s (& the original Mastodon server’s) seal of approval. So you should all shush because clearly you’re mistaken.
#Threads is not a text sharing platform, nor a #SocialMedia app. It's a platform for people to create natural language examples Meta can use for training #LLMs, for free
With yesterday's announcement that Meta is starting to test Threads and ActivityPub integration, I see the #Fediverse is at an all time high again of whining and crying and being butthurt over it all.
I get stating your opinion about not wanting them here or whatever, but come on people, don't sound like a little 2 year old who lost their pacifier. It gets old, quick.
Just mute/block and move on and be done with it all. It's really that damn simple.

A take on an "ideal" fediverse

Twitter users try to comprehend the Fediverse, they can't.
