In the late ‘60s, to right-wing activists, communists were over-running campuses and administrators needed to be subpoenaed and law enforcement sent in to forcibly end protests.

In 2024, to right-wing activists, antisemites are over-running college campuses and university administrators need to be subpoenaed and law enforcement sent in to forcibly end protests.

A historian of the reaction to campus protests lays out the parallels:

Important question: when have large-scale student movements been on the wrong side of history?

I may be biased by my progressive leanings (no, scratch that, I'm definitely heavily biased by them) but it seems like we can reliably look to the young to see the direction we should be moving.

I don't care where you stand politically or your views on the fucked up situation in Gaza, everyone should be standing up to loudly support the rights of students across the globe to protest.

Full stop.

    The U.S. Army has deployed its new Typhon midrange ground-based missile launcher to the Indo-Pacific region for the first time, for joint military exercises in the northern Philippines — a move likely to unnerve China. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/04/16/asia-pacific/politics/us-midrange-missiles-philippines-china/

    Runyan50,
    @Runyan50@newsie.social avatar

    @thejapantimes This is a big deal and an escalation in the South China Sea. This provides anti-ship and land attack cruise missiles out to 1,000 miles and supersonic anti-ship missiles out to the extent of the Philippines economic zone. China’s move.

    Runyan50,
    @Runyan50@newsie.social avatar

    @youronlyone @pilipinas @philippines @thejapantimes This only speculation, but it seems this placement in the Philippines keeps China on their back foot regarding the Spratleys. If they use real violence against a ship there, they will be attacked by both subsonic and supersonic missiles simultaneously. Those missiles could be fired by the Navy, but this ostentatious placement by the Army is a line in the sand so to speak. The Tomahawk’s ability to hit the Chinese mainland is a bonus.

    Unfortunately, some Dems have sold out to corp. interests too. It's shameful:

    Based on timing -it appears that the meeting was intended to thwart the antitrust efforts, at the behest of regulators’ corp. adversaries. The presence of both Massie & Correa is intended to signal that both parties have concerns about antitrust enforcers’ approach, particularly on the HSR proposed rule, sources explained. & the effort seeks to indoctrinate staff into that mindset.
