Can you sell pardons. Can you sell future pardons. Why isn’t it illegal. Oh yeah, law is for the poors.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963
Pardons is just one area we saw openly abused by Trump for which there has been no legislation or policy created to avoid a repeat.

Even if Dems win in 2024, these weaknesses must be addressed before a more competent fascist abuses them.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963
What could be done about pardons, which are a constitutional right of the POTUS?

My non-legal suggestion is that the issue a policy defining what are "corrupt intent" (eg unconstitutional) grounds for a pardon.

Foremost on this list is any self-pardon, family pardon or anyone whose case has the involvement of the POTUS or their family.

I hear ya
In Mar 2016, I made a bet that Trump would win. I never wanted to lose so badly in my life.

I expected a terrible SCOTUS (but 5-4), grifting, tax cuts, etc. I even thought war was possible (but not nukes, cuz he's a coward). And TF if it hasn't all happened.

But if looking for good news, at least the ACA survived and got stronger.

I think the EC win will be similar, if not bigger, for Biden than 2020.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@aral
That escalated quickly. From one protest in Germany being broken up to an EU-wode comment.

In the article, it's clear that languages can be used at protests, if there is an interpreter ...to ensure there's no incitement to terrorism. IMO, that's a worthy goal - and a reasonable limitation.

This group knew the law, chose not to have an interpreter (altho it seems it had many polyglots) and got the inevitable result. To me, it seems like they were aiming for a headline.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@freakazoid @aral
Assuming you think incitement to violence is not protected speech, I'm not sure why that's an issue.

If you think it is protected, then I'm outta here.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@aral @freakazoid
Literally the same?

Sure, they're both about intel gathering. But one is a restriction on private communications. The other is a restriction on public, group protest events.

Reasonable people can disagree whether diff rules should apply.

For example, write "FIRE!" on a piece of paper and mail it to a neighbor. The response will be very diff from shouting it in a crowd.

TCatInReality,
@TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

@aral @freakazoid
I am not.

But surely we can agree that if one wanted to incite violence in public, speaking in a language unknown to the police is super convenient.

I'm not saying it's a good law, and I'm often critical of overpolicing. Still, it's not unreasonable for police to want to close that loophole in a limited way.

This law does NOT ban speaking in Irish anywhere. It's targeted and there's an accommodation offered (interpreters). There are much bigger dangers.

More people responding to Trump's latest campaign stop, er, gaggle on court steps.

Here's Brad Moss's take:

: It’s a case as to book-keeping, which is a very minor thing in terms of the law in terms… This is a case where you pay a lawyer, it's a lawyer and they call it a legal expense. That's the exact term they use. We never even deducted it as a tax deduction

    In the interests of annoying everyone in the hard line politics and morals sportsball team model of life...

    There's nothing inherently antisemitic about protesting to end a war. Arresting peaceful protesters on college campuses for civil disobedience is not a great look. Regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

    On the flipside, chanting things like "yehuda yehuda," "we're all Hamas," or "Remember the 7th of October! That will happen not one more time, not five more times, not 10 more times, not 100 more times, not 1000 more times, but 10,000 times!" surely is all meant to be pirposely antisemitic.

    Holding a sign that reads “Al-Qassam’s next target" with an arrow pointing to a group of Jews isn't anti-war or even anti-zionism. It's fucking crazy is what it is.

    So stop strong arming protests. They're normal. Even if they have very fucked up elements in them.

    Protestors, you got a 'nazi bar' problem and you should fix it or fuck off. There's no excuse for this shit.

    I'm not denying that those words weren't said, but that wasn't any part of this march's platform.

    Let's be honest and understand sometimes these statements are just a few people - and not dismiss the larger peace movement.

    TCatInReality,
    @TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

    @TonyStark @dukepaaron
    Huh?

    Are you saying that I'm equating a street march (where a small group may have said some vile things) with a violent mob who fought police to overrun a closed building and stop Congress.

    Cuz I have no problem labeling all the people on the Capitol grounds as insurrectionists, esp those fighting or inside.

    But I do object to labeling everyone in a street march for the words of a few.

    TCatInReality,
    @TCatInReality@mastodon.social avatar

    @TonyStark @dukepaaron
    Let's not mininize it ... Or maximalize it either, so that it obscures the whole peace movement.

    The best way to avoid both (and to free the hostages) is a negotiated ceasefire and small trust building exercises.

    It's just Trump has burned so many bridges that the usual cronyism won't help him avoid the law.

    In was thinking further back, to Harding and some other corrupt POTUSes.

    But my point is not to rank the corruptness, or motive, or the past POTUS. It's to praise accountability and rule of law that has not been applied to them for over 200 years.
