A gentleman named Paul Khoury approached me about getting a retro computer he'd acquired up and running. The computer is a Sun SPARCstation UPN (1997), a prototype for a super small desktop computer that preceded the Mac mini by about 6-7 years. Only about 20 were ever made. I was the designer on the project and had poured my soul into it, so I was proud to help him get it running. I dug out the schematics from storage and gave any advice I could remember and he got it powered on in a few days.

Front view of the Sun Microsystems UPN, super small desktop system. This is a prototype and no more than about 20-30 were ever made. Measured approximately 9 inches long, 7 inches high and about 4 inches wide. Had two SBus slots and a AFX graphics card slot. Two serial ports, Sun Keyboard/Mouse connector, 16-bit audio and external SCSI. On the top were slots for up to two PCMCIA cards, which brought in nascent WiFi capability. There was an internal SCA type hard drive of approximately 200GB. Processor was the Fujitsu turboSPARC-170MHz. Memory was two standard 32MB DRAM cards. Ran Solaris 5.9 operating system.

Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

Fun language/free market convergence thing: A "right angle" is where two lines intersect at a 90 degree angle, and you can buy "right angle cables", where the plug at one end is rotated to point at a 90 degree angle away from the cable.

But what if you want a cable to go the other way? Well, in that case, you want to search for a "left angle" cable, and it'll point in the opposite direction to a typical "right angle" cable.

There also exist "up angle" and "down angle" adapters, like these.

Just word to American friends to let them know the horrors of socialised medicine.
Took my dad to the local hospital for an ENT clinic appointment. Due his 6 monthly maintenance of hearing aids. He told them the up volume button was not working on both aids. The tech verified they were not working. He got two new aids then and there - no charge .
In the hospital for a total of 50 mins. We arrived 20 mins early.
Also we got there and back by frequent public bus service which is free for my dad.

Don't tell me Sir Beige Starmer is just as bad as Richie Rich Sunak. He isn't. I'm not saying he's going to be good. He isn't good. But he will categorically not be as bad for as many people as the Tories.
Would we do better under a different system? Yes.
Will some things improve less than we would all like? Yes.
Are there some policies where Labour isn't much different from the Tories? A few.

It's still going to be a HUGE improvement to the vast majority.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.
