Incredibly lucky husband, father of 3 great guys, I'm a wannabee hacker, and System76 Linux nut. Always curious. Training, teaching, and learning in small groups is life giving. I speak some French, a little Arabic.

@paulox Interesting! Especially in light of potential migration from Amazon Kindle users like me since their recent ADs introduction this month. Best of luck in your endeavours.

@paulox Hmm. OK. I'll check that one out. I'm using my Linux desktop app, Calibre, right now for EPUB books.

Lots of people throwing alternatives out there, but I haven’t seen much love for @buttondown. No idea why, because it’s awesome.

With Buttondown you get:

✅ Fully hosted
✅ Newsletter, RSS and public archive (a blog)
✅ Custom CSS for both newsletter and web
✅ Run by a really cool person who’s always adding new features
✅ That warm fuzzy feeling of supporting indie devs

https://buttondown.email

craigcorbin,

@kev @buttondown I checked them out. They look like a decent newsletter place. I doubt I'll ever use a newsletter mailing service again, though, until the high percentage of bounces problem is solved -- too many newsletters are flagged automatically as spam by ISPs. I wish them the very best.

Images and videos from movies or video games or earlier wars have proliferated during the Israel-Hamas war.

A human rights expert who looks at the ethics of misinformation says we have an obligation to try to distinguish between real and fake.
He recommends the SIFT technique: Stop, Investigate, Find, Trace before sharing

🤦‍♂️ seeing some complaints about content warnings, so thought I’d provide some context for anyone who’s confused on our position…

It isn’t about human rights, or what’s good or bad; right or wrong. It’s about the fact that a lot of people come here to geek out and escape all the horrendous shit that’s going on in the world. So we politely ask that political or triggering posts be placed behind a CW.

That way, those who don’t want to see it, don’t have to.

Linux_Is_Best, to Amazon

I have unplugged my Amazon Alexa and may unsubscribe from Amazon Prime.

For years, Amazon Alexa allowed me to get BBC News minute briefings. Today, she asked me what my preferred news source is and I replied, BBC News.

Amazon Alexa subscribed me to ABC News and when I instruct her to unsubscribe from ABC News, she tells me something went wrong!

F-ck you, Amazon!

craigcorbin,

@Linux_Is_Best I share your frustration. Amazon Prime Music/Podcasts will not let me add in BBC News, my primary news source. My alternative has been to use Google podcasts, but they've announced they are shutting down soon. When I'm overseas, I listen to BBC everyday on local and free FM radio on my android phone. My current stateside options now are to listen NPR.org local stations that broadcast BBC as well.

If you know someone is on here but you can't find their account by searching, ask them by some other method for their account address and paste this into the search box. Their profile will appear, including a "follow" button. More details about how to find addresses here:

This is the equivalent of exchanging phone numbers or email addresses.

(This happens if an account is very new or hasn't posted much, so your server's search hasn't "noticed" it yet.)

craigcorbin,

@feditips Useful! 👍

There are good reasons why the Fediverse is on so many servers:

-It prevents Musk (or anyone!) from buying the network

-If a server is badly run, you can move to another without losing your followers

-Far more human admins on the Fediverse, moderation tends to be better

-If one server goes down, the others still work

-Each server makes its own rules

-Anyone can set up a server

-Lots of server types to choose from, and they connect to each other

    More details at https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/

I've been giving a lot of thought today to how we actually make change in the world, in time to address the ; and I've come to the conclusion that it's exceedingly unlikely that constitutional politics – parliaments and governments – can adapt in time to do anything useful.

Which means, we need a of direct public action not to protest but to to build the structures of the new future. >>>
