Too much truth on the internet today.

fencepost,

@hacks4pancakes live on the east coast, work remotely with people on the west coast. If they want 9am meetings, great, you can make it a lunch meeting.

Business travel will be annoying though.

Really interesting new insight into autoimmunity...

"Such immune system disorders also disproportionately affect women. In the US, four in every five autoimmune patients are women.

New research has found this can be traced to an interaction between the two X chromosomes in people who've got a pair, predominantly cisgender women.

When there's two X chromosomes available, a cell can only use the information from one, or things get a bit messy."

    https://www.sciencealert.com/4-out-of-5-autoimmune-patients-are-female-the-x-chromosome-could-explain-why

    fencepost,

@mekkaokereke @fifilamoura you'd think that there'd have been at least one colorblind individual that might have realized that XX vs XY matters for some conditions.

    fencepost,

@fifilamoura I'm actually really surprised that there wasn't more XX research given how much we used to hear about the HeLa cell line being used. I'm also really glad to see progress continuing on a personal basis, having a family member with multiple autoimmune diseases. The amount of progress in the last couple decades is amazing.

I suspect VR headset manufacturers with pass-through capabilities are going to have to try find ways to minimize or ideally prevent drivers wearing them while driving. It's not going to be easy to do this while not preventing passengers from wearing them, but the specter of a driver going literally blind instantly when a headset crashes or pass-through is otherwise disabled is nightmarish.

    fencepost,

@lauren transparent OLED displays have been in development for some time and there's a fair chance they'll be available Real Soon Now. When fully unpowered those should be somewhat transparent. It'd require engineering (electronics around the sides or offloaded as the battery already is), but could provide an option. Privacy would be a concern, but the Vision Pro already has one step towards addressing that with the outward facing eyes display.

@aetios @SecurityWriter competent design, lessons learned from Oculus and other competitors, incremental improvements just from processor and display improvements over time, not having the creepy factor of Facebook/Meta involvement. Some combination of the immersive ability of Oculus plus much better Augmented Reality than was widely available. From a business perspective it's presumably not losing money on each headset sold, and it may well drive Mac sales because it's likely not going to have a ton of Windows integration. With what's basically a desktop processor it has plenty of power to likely run things onboard that require tethering and a graphics card for its competition.

Dying to know the capacity of the Apple Vision Pro battery. In MKBHD's video he lists 3166 mAh on the back. I'm really curious what the Volts are, because if it's ~4V like the iPad that would be very small (12 Wh) so I doubt it

For reference the 12.9” iPad has a ~ 10000 mAh battery at 4V for a total of 40 Wh, so if the Vision Pro battery is around that, that would put it at 12V or so. That would be awesome because you could then triple your battery life with a normal 100 Wh external battery

    fencepost,

@christianselig lithium polymer cells are all 3.7v and the Vision Pro shouldn't really draw that much more than an iPhone at load, so a battery capacity in that range seems not unreasonable.

I'm being asked about fitness trackers. I know basically nothing about them (which I guess tells you something) beyond the general tech aspects; certainly nothing about which ones are considered the most accurate for different sorts of metrics. Primary purpose is likely sleep monitoring, but other metrics, advanced functions, and connectivity options are also of interest. There seem to be an awful lot out there across a very wide price range so I really don't know where to start with a recommendation. Apple is probably off the table. Informed advice would be welcome, especially from actual users. Thanks.

    fencepost,

@lauren I'd look at the Garmin vivosmart 5 - minimal smartwatch features, you can turn off Bluetooth completely and sync with a pc using a USB cable, multi-day battery life. At least some of the other Garmin devices have the same capability, E.g. the Lily 2.

For in depth looks at lots of fitness trackers I'd look at DC Rainmaker's site.

Gonna share some truths that are taboo to talk about, and everyone is gonna angrily at me about (I’m going to drink this mead then have a nap, don’t bother):glasses frames are a monopoly, but you can buy pretty nice glasses from China if you have a prescription for like $20, I have like 11 - look at Vooglam ~ nobody actually gives a shit if you go to the glamorous restaurant alone, as long as you tip well and are polite - in fact you’ll get better drinks at the bar~ the secret to doing a lot of stuff as an adult, like hobbies or going places, is just asking. Nobody gives a shit if you tip well and you’re polite. You can go almost wherever. You can finger paint. Whatevs.~ life is too short for shit beer & liquor~ life is too short for shit men, love~ there will be other loves even though it seems giant ~ trans rights are human rights and I’ll officiate your wedding ~ local elections matter ~ you should be seeing a therapist~ if you haven’t worn it in two years, donate it, darling~ people at bars want to tell you about their jobs and hobbies, and they’re all interesting~ video games and D&D are real life skills~ find the fitness that you can do long term~ no fad diets~ you don’t have to know how to code or watch Star Wars to be a great IT person~ if you ever have or think you have a serious health problem in America, understand our healthcare is shit and you need to research it yourself and then get like 3 opinions minimum. Nobody will look out for you like you do.~ you should probably wear the mask~ if you have ovaries that work you can just take birth control forever and never have a period, there are some health caveats but it’s mostly sorta kinda just a stigma not to. The military does this.~ if you have ovaries that work find an gynecologist who is generally not an asshole, life is too short for checking with your nonexistent husband ~ if your doctor harps on your bmi and nothing else, then get a new doctor, before you die. Literally.~ it’s a good night if you get home safe, brush your teeth, and take an aleve~ life is too short to penny pinch instead of living, because soon we’ll be gone~ you look perfect in that outfit to everyone except you ~ life is too short for shit jobs ~ ask how other people are doing, and listen~ genuinely care about what happens to other people because it will happen to you

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

    fencepost,

@spbollin @lauren probably worth looking at elevators and regulations - is voip allowed for elevator emergency lines? Do any voip carriers allow that kind of emergency use (including AT&T)? Heck, do data carriers have exclusions that bar use for voip or other emergency communications?
