@georgetakei It is weird the way it has turned out. As Lyndon Johnson said, it was the Voting Rights Act. Democrats lost southern voters (who had been Democrats) and the Republicans decided to cater to them.

There's genuine confusion about why the Christian right wants to ban IVF.

"Don't they want women to be mothers?" folks ask.

No. They want women to be second class. Forced childbirth is one weapon. But so is denying motherhood to others. My explainer.

https://www.salon.com/2024/02/23/alabamas-targeting-of-ivf-is-the-christian-rights-attempt-to-control-motherhood-and-theocracy/

glennsills,
@glennsills@dotnet.social avatar

@AmandaMarcotte This article doesn't talk about the Catholic position on IVF. The Catholic position is that IVF is immoral because is fertilizes the egg in an "unnatural" way. It removes one of the purposes for marriage. I think that Catholic influence on the "right-to-life" movement is showing up in this Alabama ruling.

"And now, Republicans are saying that if they retake the White House they will change the Medicare rules so that people newly turning 65 will enroll by default into Medicare Advantage rather than real, traditional Medicare, further enhancing the profits of these massive, billion-dollar insurance giants while rapidly killing off real, traditional Medicare."

@StillIRise1963 Of course. Once a consensus has formed that Medicare Advantage is a bad deal, the GOP wants to require it for all.

I was exploring down a gravel road, and stopped to take a picture of this Donkey sitting in a field, but it got up, and decided it wanted pets, and then three dogs, small, medium, and large, also came running from across the road, to get pets too. They have a whole racket going on!

He starts to stand up
He's walking over!
The Donkey and one of the dogs having a chat, they are friends!

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

glennsills,
@glennsills@dotnet.social avatar

@Tattooed_mummy @RickiTarr This is true. I must say that I often wish my wife would be "more pushy and bossy" in a proactive way rather than being disappointed after the fact. She often delegates the "where do we want to go out to eat" questions to me, when I don't care but she has something in mind.

It's so weird that we are all supposed to be ashamed for burping and farting. I deeply apologize to everyone for keeping my body from literally exploding, so uncouth.

glennsills,
@glennsills@dotnet.social avatar

@RickiTarr Reminds me of hiking up a mountain behind a group of 3 women once. The woman farted, apparently silently, but immediately turned around and said, "watch out, I farted". Her friends seemed bemused, and she said, "Well I warned you, that's the best I can do.".

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

Cataglyphis lutea (UAE and parts of India) is a desert dwelling ant, the photos of this ant on iNaturalist caught my eye, since, like Leptomyrmex erythrocephalus (the Spider Ant of Australia), this these little ants fold their gasters over their mesonoma.

Very little is known about Cataglyphis lutea, shockingly little. I can't even find a mention of gaster folding in any of the brief descriptions of this ant.

This is why descriptions are not enough. 1/

(photos by Jonghyn Park and TimL)

A black ant with a red head and black dot eyes clamors over a rock on remarkably long legs. The antennae and legs are very long and evenly spread giving the impression of a spider (hence the common name) The gaster is folded over the mesonoma.

I bought some pink sand for my ants but it’s strangely hydrophobic? It is very fine sand and it will become saturated if stirred vigorously - but why does it trap air like this? isn’t this odd?

Piles of sparkling pink sand retains air at the bottom of the glass.

    @DrALJONES @israel Yeah. Now, 80 years after WWII ended and the Zionist enterprise began in earnest, we have the problem that there are two populations that are established on the land. Many on both sides are intent on ridding the land of the other side.

    The settler colonialism analysis is spot on, but it doesn't provide a way forward. A non-sectarian/non-ethnic state with laws that treat everyone equally is needed, but that seems even less likely than the 2 state solution.

    SI Base Units in order of how well I understand them intuitively:

    mol mole amount
    m meter length
    cd candela brightness
    K kelvin temperature
    s second time
    kg kilogram mass
    A ampere electric current

    I think most people would have ampere last (provided you remember what moles and candles are... neither are that hard to understand.)

    kg is low on the list due to the issue of "weight"

    What order would you place the base units in? Which unit do you need to spend more quality time understanding?
