1980s: Personal computers! So you don't have to use a mainframe! Independence!

2000s: Web services! So you're dependent on a handful of mainframes! Annoying if one is offline, but you can still get stuff done.

2020s: AI! So you're dependent on a single mainframe that serves everyone world-wide! Too bad if it goes down.

15 years ago, the Greens started warning that we needed to start preparing and planning the transition from coal to renewable energy.

The Libs responding by gaslighting and saying things like “You can’t shut down coal energy overnight!”, something the Greens were in no way shape or form asking for.

The media simply quoted the Libs. Their excuse? “We WeRe JuSt TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId!”. Never quoted what the Greens actually wanted, or actually analyzed the situation, just QuOtEd WhAt ThEy SaId! The Liberals and those talking complete and utter horse shit. While burying their heads in the sand about energy transition.

Now, we’re in a situation where coal plants are shutting down ahead of the 15 years ago schedule, renewable sources have been delayed massively, and many don’t have power lines heading to them nor are connected to the grid properly. We are in the EXACT problem situation the Greens were warning about 15 years ago.

The media won’t take responsibility for their one-sided citing and TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId. They’ll just write articles pretending that never happened, glossing over their part in it.

We’re in for hard times. All caused by the Liberal governments of the last 15 years. And Labor especially now aren’t exactly any better. And caused by the media failing to do their actual jobs.

OMG! TIL there's a way to add back the long-since-removed capability to add your own custom search engines to Firefox.

In about:config, add a new boolean key browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh = true.

Then the "Add" button is available in search preferences (put %s where the query term goes).

As always, domestic abuse is the flagship infosec threat model, the one where the victim has the least resources, the least recourse, where they're closest to immediate physical harm.

That this industry has failed at and mostly abandoned the idea of even pretending to try dealing with a threat model that's difficult and unprofitable and mostly hurts women is not news, but this new Windows Recall feature is next-level professional negligence.

OK - but the problem is, they're going to lend credence to 's claims that they're "dedicated to /", even though we know that A. it's lip service, and B. secure, private systems are currently not technically possible at all, let alone with MS products.

The proper regulatory response would be "No & we're going to need 3rd party documentation for privacy & security before you launch anything like this again & this goes for the entire industry".

Although some will be fortunate enough to escape the perils of MS and move to we have to accept for the vast majority this is either simply not allowed by their IT departments or not possible due to the heavy reliance and integration with other Microsoft products that aren’t truely available on Linux. Whilst we should embrace an uptake of Linux we should continue to fight for and just common sense in Windows.

Data retained by MS recall will absolutely be subpoenaed. It will also likely be discoverable by litigants.
I might have to amend my usual warning to clients to not write anything they would not want to have to explain to a court to not doing anything on a computer they don't want to explain under oath.

can't make it up: a plan to push up the minimum age of social media to 16 gets immediate support from political leaders. meanwhile a long-running campaign to increase the age of criminality to 16 has stalled.

We already have something that actually can achieve the human-level performance that keeps being claimed by these charlatans yet not attained, it’s called humans. Imagine what investing $7 trillion in humans could accomplish.

If I can't turn the new Recall feature off using InTune or group policy, along with any and all 'AI' on Windows 11, it's time to chuck 20+ years of Windows out and move to Linux.

This is a public health failure that will further decrease already low vax rates, and puts marginalized communities at greater risk.

This is probably the first of several toots I’ll be making over the next several months. FYI there is a maximum of 365 days to the next Australian Federal election. By my calculations/experience 17/05/2025 is the last Saturday that would enable full Senate counting and return of the writs by 30/06/2025, which is constitutionally required to enable the new Senators to take their seats. The earliest election date of 3/8/2024 is 78 days away.
