My second time around. My original instance on a Raspberry Pi in my garage crashed and absolutely burned.

I'm a technical type from the province of Ontario. In my spare time, I love to cook, play video games, play tabletop games (board games, card games, RPGs), and build things - mainly electronics or 3d prints, but I'm starting to get in to woodworking.

Disc golf, camping, ham radio and other hobbies too numerous to mention.

Rated T for Tired.

I am abruptly in the basement of my childhood home, playing the Freespace demo, and beyond thrilled because my Logitech Wingman Extreme gamepad had force feedback and it would rumble when I hit the afterburners.

@Computer
Friend Computer, I would like to report treasonous knowledge transfer, as a person I know who is definitely not me has received a volume labelled "The Core Book". He was assured that reading it would make me - I mean him! - happier and of course he definitely needed to ensure I was maximally happy but there appears to have been some mistake because the book appears to have Ultraviolet information that he definitely isn't cleared for.

It's day 9 of elevating my (broken? sprained? who knows!) ankle and I'd like to give away a gift copy of this itch.io bundle: https://itch.io/b/2321/palestinian-relief-bundle

It's a mix of indie and games. If you want to be considered, tell me something funny to entertain me. I'm here all day! (I'll draw a name later today whenever I feel like it, because I'm here all day).

llanion,
@llanion@masto.ai avatar

@Vidyala I don't know about funny, but entertaining:
I have recently started intentionally picking library books from the parts of the Dewey Decimal system I don't normally patronize (it's usually Fiction + the 600s where the cookbooks live).

So far I have tried:
000 (Generalities) a book that said it was about reading but was a stealth autobiography. Not a fan.
200 (Religion) A secular Jew in New York City spends a year living as Biblically as he can (1/2)

llanion,
@llanion@masto.ai avatar

@Vidyala
300 (Social Sciences) A fascinating book on cryptography up to the 1980s- so right before it all became computerized and hard to understand. Also, a book on economics titled "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus".
600 (Technology / Applied Sciences) A book on fermenting drinks at home, which led to about six liters of kombucha
800 (Literature): A book by Arthur Black of CBC's Basic Black, his last book of essays and musings.

@Vidyala I am every week picking a different "century". Once I finish, I'm going to go through on the half-centuries (that is, having checked out 212, I need something that is 250-299, and so on). After that, who can really say?

Very unpleasant looking outside as my morning starts. Not much snow accumulation (a couple of cm?) but slushy looking and howling winds too.

Power holding - curious how the city is faring. Peeking at power company info…

llanion,
@llanion@masto.ai avatar

@ottaross Yeah, this is very much a "hide indoors and don't go out" kind of a day, at least for the early parts. We'll have to see how the afternoon develops.

Not that the conditions are terrible, but they could all-too-easily develop into "stranded at the office" and I really don't love that idea.

Libraries. Libraries are fantastic. "Here, let us collect books so you don't have to track them down and pay for them.

And we will not only let you access them, but the vast majority you can take home to read in your cozy chair. And then you get to give them BACK instead of them taking up shelf space."

After grumbling about the language model "AI" thing for the last several years, I have had a co-worker point out something at which they are genuinely good:

Translation into other languages. Yes. That makes sense. That is something this thing is good at.

Am I still reading over the translation and cross-checking it against other sources? Yes, absolutely. Using it for critical communications? No, never.

But at least there's SOMETHING these are good for and at.

Scored some hard-to-find Guinness Zero no-alcohol beer at the grocery store of all places.

A bit more costly than the 'real' Guinness. Quite hard to find, but happy to finally nab a pack.

I hope your day is going great! Got any interesting on the go ?

Swapped out my Ender 3's stock mainboard for a Creality 4.2.7 "silent" board- I really do see why they call it that.

While I was at it, I installed Klipper on a Pi3 and, just to round things out, tried the Prusa slicer again instead of Cura.

So far, so eerily quiet and smooth. All the noise- ALL the noise- is from the fans.

Started out as one of those mornings where screaming into the void seemed like the only and, furthermore, obviously correct choice of action.

A ten-minute phone call with a friendly voice turned that around.

So, hey, I may or may not be able to actually call you so you can hear a friendly voice, but here's some friendly words:

Congratulations. You did it. It's Friday! You made it through another week and sometimes that can be hard.

    Yesterday was a hard day. Got cheered up a bit today by getting a free bike off one of those Buy Nothing groups on Facebook.

    When last I visited my family I rode a pushbike for the first time in over twenty years and I'd forgotten how much fun they were, how light, how without the context of being on top of an engine you look behind yourself and go "Wow, I went FAR!" and I said "Haha yeah I'm gonna get a bike when I get back to America." My brother said, as many people in my life have always said, "Dan, never buy a pushbike, people throw or give them away them all the time" and everyone's right of course, they do.

    This thing's got two problems, slow leaks in the tyres and not changing gears properly. I've never fiddled with a derailleur before but eh, it's not rocket science, it just goes in and out on a cable; got the derailleur all cleaned off and adjusted up and still no dice so I took apart the shifter mech that lives on the yoke. Symptom was it wouldn't shift down more than a couple of clicks, this is the style where you've got two levers, one has a positive snap and one feels like a ratchet, the ratchetty one weren't ratchetting so I figured its ratchet must be stuck open and aye, its ratchet were stuck open.

    Now if only I'd known this thing came apart on a left-hand thread, I might not have stripped that one bolt and be waiting on parts, but in the meantime I worked it a bit and gave it a drop of oil and now the ratchet bit works if you press up as well as in lol, just kinda hold it together with a squeeze whenever you change gears, it's fine

    Tyres can wait til the weekend, I'll just pump it up now and then

    Also this thing is so high. It's SO. HIGH. I'm 185cm and when I went to see to the bloke giving it away I craned my neck right back to say hello, dude could've been 2m tall. The seat's already down as far as it'll go and I'm 41 so I don't think I'm likely to grow into it. Getting real Penny Farthing feeling tryna ride the thing. Good fun though, and littleun actually managed to Properly Ride her bike today for a few metres, pedalling and everything, so tomorrow's gonna be a dad-and-daughter-and-bike day

    Funny coincidence, as we've been methodically working our way through sequential seasons of the old crime drama/comedy for more than a year. We see an ep every week or so

    My Tuesday 'next day' order's delivery status confidently said "today before 10pm" all day yesterday.

    Checking it at 11pm, it still said that – yet the tracking details said "not yet shipped."

    Not sure why those states are allowed to co-exist in their system.

    llanion,
    @llanion@masto.ai avatar

    @ottaross I have had terrible luck lately with their "Guaranteed" delivery dates not happening. Then you have to wait three days before you can even ask what's going on, following which they send you a fresh one of whatever.

    I'm starting to wonder if they've got a Princess Bride thing going on with the word "Guaranteed".

    If so, oh, I am so excited for you! As one of the grognards that's been playing the game for a long time and owns it, uh... four times in different formats?

    Anyone who tells you a particular version is "bad" or "wrong" can go lick a Nu. They all have their own quirks and variations... so?
